Prologue
Davinchi
“Yo, what’s up? I see she got you pushing the whip,” Paris said when I pulled up.
I didn’t even respond, I just hopped out the car and drew down on him.
“Nigga, you wanna be funny?” I asked.
He had his hands up. “What happened?”
“Yo, chill, B,” my other homies said, tryna pull me away, but I pushed them back.
“It was just a joke,” Paris said. This nigga was so scared, he dropped his blunt.
“Nigga, I got my dick sucked by a punk!”
“Whoaa,” I heard my other homie, Bizz say.
“He wasn’t supposed to even do all that, B, on God!” Paris pleaded.
“Come on, B, put the gun down,” Bizz said, reaching for my gun.
“Get… the fuck… back, Bizz, this ain’t got nothing to do with you!” I yelled with my finger on the trigger.
“It was a joke, B,” Paris said once more.
“Yeah? Well I’m feeling real mothafucking trigga happy today,” I said before emptying my clip into him. He flew back against the wall and slid down. I was numb.
“B, you killed him,” Bizz said, tryna take the gun from me.
“Who else knew?” I asked.
“Nigga, you got me fucked up. I ain’t know shit about no punk,” my homie, Rocki said.
“I wouldn’t even play like that,” my other homie said.
“Nobody knew. But you need to get rid of that gun and get out of here,” Bizz said.
But it was too late. The police were pulling up.
“Freeze!” one of them yelled.
“Drop the weapon!”
I looked back at Paris and my other homies. I had death on my mind, and wasn’t tryna spend my life in prison. I was caught… red handed. I cocked my gun.
“Don’t you fucking do it!” one cop yelled before saying something into his radio that was clipped to his collar.
“Chill, B. They not just gonna shoot you, they gonna shoot all of us if you do that,” Rocki said.
“Davinchi, my nigga. Come on,” Bizz said.
Finally, I put the gun down, and the police rushed over and put me in handcuffs. Before they put me in the car, I saw Emo running up the street.
“Yo, what the fuck happened?” I heard him yelling as the police held him back.
“He’s gone,” Rocki said.
“Who?”
“Paris. Davinchi killed him.”
Emo looked over at me with pleading eyes. “Come onnnnn, dawg. Damn! Why you have to kill ’em?” he asked.
The police were trying to calm him down as we drove off down the street.
And I didn’t regret a damned thing.
Chapter One
Diamond
Two months later…
“Stop giving me messages from Davinchi. I’m not going to see his ass, and that’s that. Fuck outta here,” I said to one of Davinchi’s homies. I was picking Rena up from Ms. Livingston, and Gee was waiting for me in the car. I didn’t have time to be there talking about no damn Davinchi. “And why the fuck you always waiting for me when I come to get my sister?” I asked as I looked Ron up and down.
“Because he asked have I seen you, and I told him that you still drop your sister off here sometimes. Damn, my bad,” he said as he backed away and put his hands up.
Usually, I wouldn’t have dropped Rena off while Gee and I were attending our counseling sessions. But Red and Yazz went on a vacation, so I was stuck with this choice. “Well tell him to leave me alone. Didn’t nobody tell him to kill nobody.” I grabbed Rena’s bag from Ms. Livingston and walked to the car.
“Can it wait? I’m busy all today.” Gee was on the phone when I put Rena in the back seat.
I rolled my eyes as I shut the door back and hopped in the front. He was always on that damn phone, and it was becoming a problem.
“I need to talk to you,” I said to him. He put his index finger up, telling me to wait, so I said it a bit louder. “I need to talk to you, Gee.”
He looked over at me for a few seconds and then started the ignition. “Eric, let me call you back.” After hanging up, he merged onto the street and then looked at me again. “What’s wrong, Diamond?”
“It’s been two months, Gee, and we’re just going to act like nothing happened?”
“Where is this coming from?”
“It’s coming from me. You literally made love to me, left, and never spoke of it again. What kinda games are you playing?” I asked.
“Not playing any games. Can we talk about this later? Rena is in the car.”
I laughed and crossed my arms. “Really? Rena can’t fucking hear, Gee.”
“Why are you cursing and yelling?”
“I’m sorry… I just… I don’t know. My emotions have been all over the place lately.”
“When was your last period?” he asked with a raised brow.
“Umm… I think it was… no… damn.” It wasn’t until now that I realized how I didn’t even remember my period. The date of my last period was a mystery to me right now.
Gee busted a U-turn and stopped in front of a convenience store. “What are you doing?” I asked.
“I’m about to get you a pregnancy test. I’ll be back.”
As he walked inside, I steadily tried to remember my last period but couldn’t. I don’t even think I had a period last month. But Gee and I only had sex once. On top of that, I had just stopped taking my birth control a little before we made love. So it was really a trip to me. What if I was really pregnant from that one time?
Finally, Gee walked back outside with a bag full of pregnancy tests. I laughed at his overly dramatic ass. All I needed was one test to tell me if I was with child or not. But this shit was crazy. I never even thought to see if I was or not.
“You hungry?” Gee asked as he put his seat belt back on and set the bag in my lap.
“Nah, I got food at my place.”
“So, I’ve been thinking…”
“Okay...” I said. He just said that incomplete ass sentence and stopped.
“Rena is extremely responsive now, and I think it’s time to put her in school early. We also need to take classes so that when she learns sign language, we can communicate with her. This is very important.”
“Yeah, but she can’t start real school until she’s five.”
“Here in NYC, they can start as early as three.”
“Yeah, but that’s expensive,” I said.
He looked over at me and narrowed his eyes with a smirk on his face. “Look who you’re talking to, Diamond.”
“But, Gee, that’s not your responsibility. It’s mine. Nothing about Rena is in that contract.”
“But what type of man would I be if I ignore the fact that she exists? And is handicapped? I can’t. We talked about this. When someone is being polite, why won’t you let them?”
“And why won’t you love me?” I asked without realizing what I had said. I wished I could take it back, but the words had already slipped out.
/> “Love you?”
“Yes, Gee. Love me. Kasha broke up with you two months ago, so what’s the excuse now? And you can’t tell me that the feelings aren’t there because we made love.”
“I never said I had no feelings for you. Okay, you want to know the truth? I had sex with you because I fucking felt sorry for you. I mean… come on… let’s be clear. You cried on my shoulder that night and went home.”
“So that means come and make love to me, and then never show an affectionate feeling toward me again?” For some reason, my face was damp. I couldn’t believe I had allowed myself to cry. I needed to pull myself together.
“See, you’re doing it again, Diamond. This is why I feel that from here on out, we need to stick to the terms of the contract.”
“Fuck that contract!”
My childish ass took my seat belt off and climbed in the back seat with Rena. He looked at me through the rearview and shook his head. It was silent the whole way to my condo.
When we got in front of the building, I told him to stop the car. “We will just get out right here,” I said.
“I’m parking.”
“Why?” I asked with an attitude.
“I want to watch you take the pregnancy test. Is that okay with you?”
“I guess,” I said as he pulled around to the inside of the garage.
“What exactly do you want from me, Diamond?” Gee asked as we parked.
I gathered Rena and her things as he opened the door for me. “I don’t even know.”
“You want me to love you?”
“I don’t know,” I said dryly as I walked to the elevator.
“Tell me.”
“I can’t.”
“Well, I can’t read your mind either,” he said as the elevator let us off. It was so pleasuring how Gee could wear plain clothes, like he did today, and still grab everyone’s attention that he met.
“I’ll turn the TV on for her,” I said as I walked in and put Rena’s bags down on the kitchen table. As soon as I put Sponge Bob on, Rena hopped out of my arms and onto the couch. If I was to let her, she would watch Sponge Bob all day. When I walked to the bathroom and prepared to pee, I noticed Gee was standing at the door.
He saw me looking at him with a side eye. “What? I told you I wanted to watch.”
“Gee, come on. Seriously?”
“You’re wasting time. Besides, I seen everything you got. You shy now?” he asked while smiling, causing me to smile too.
“Whatever,” I said as I pulled out a plastic cup and urinated in it.
Then, I wiped and flushed the toilet. Finally, I used the pee in the cup to drop pee on all fifteen of the pregnancy test.
“Let me see your vagina again,” Gee said jokingly as he leaned on the door with his phone in hand.
I rolled my eyes and hopped on the countertop to wait. “That would be breeching our contract,” I said sarcastically.
“Yeah, you’re right,” he said.
I threw one of the pregnancy tests at him. He dodged it and picked it up while laughing. Then his laughter disappeared.
“What?” I asked nervously. I didn’t even want to look down at the other test.
“I didn’t expect to feel like this, being that we planned it.”
“What? What does it say?” I asked.
He walked over to me and held it in front of me. “You’re pregnant.”
“Wow. That hurt more than I thought it would,” I said. Then I looked down at all the tests that read positive for pregnancy. What the hell was I about to do with a baby by a man who didn’t love me, in a fake ass marriage?
“What’s wrong?” he asked as I got down and walked to my room.
“I didn’t fully think this through, Gee.”
“Diamond, please don’t start this. Please…” He shut the door.
“Gee, how are we going to do this? Did we even think about this?” I asked as I slid down the wall and curled up.
“Why are you crying? You’re not alone. Didn’t I tell you that I would be here for my child?” he asked, kneeling down and gently grabbing my face.
“But what about me? What about being here for me?”
“I’m forever going to be here for you. You’re having my baby.”
“Leave,” I said. He wasn’t getting it. He didn’t understand shit I was saying.
“Leave?”
“Yes. Leave.” I stood up and wiped my tears.
“Diamond, your emotions are through the roof right now, and I understand. But don’t act like this. What do you want from me?”
“I want you to leave.”
He stood back and looked at me for a long time before making any moves. Then, suddenly, he grabbed me and laid me on the bed.
“I know what you want,” he said as he slid my pants and panties off. Then he slid his pants and boxers off.
“You don’t have to give me pity sex,” I said, but I didn’t stop him.
He slid into my already wet pussy and looked into my eyes. “I’m happy, Diamond. You’re helping me live my dream, and you will be the first woman to bear my child. How can I get you to see things my way?” he asked as he pumped in and out of me.
I felt my warm juices running all down my thighs and legs.
“You don’t see things my way,” I cried and moaned at the same time.
It was getting so good that I had to push him back so I wouldn’t cum so fast. He then bit down on my neck.
“Give me all you got right now,” he moaned as he buried his face into my neck and fucked me harder.
The way my headboard was knocking, I was so happy Rena couldn’t hear it.
“Tell me you love me,” I moaned. He didn’t. As a matter of fact, he didn’t say a word. “Tell me, Gee,” I cried.
“Turn around,” he said as he used one hand and one swift motion to get me ass up and face down.
My head was now buried in the pillow with all of his weight against my backside. He took his strong arms and wrapped them around me tight as he fucked me from behind. But he had yet to tell me that he loved me.
“I love you, Gee,” I moaned with tears streaming down my face.
He didn’t say anything. Instead, he bit my neck and sucked on it passionately. I tightened my pussy muscles and sucked on his fingers.
“Damn, Diamond,” he moaned as he slapped his pelvis against my ass harder and harder. I don’t even think we were making love like we did the first time. He was fucking the life outta me.
“I’m cuming,” I moaned as I released two months of tension onto his dick.
After I released myself, he did too. Then he flipped me on my back and climbed back between my legs. But not to have sex again.
“Hold me,” he said.
So I did. I wrapped my arms and legs around his body and it felt so warm and good.
“What are we doing?” I asked.
“We’re figuring each other out.”
“Why is it so hard for you to feel about me how I feel about you?”
“You want me to be honest?” he asked as he got comfortable on my breast.
“Not really. But I need to hear the truth,” I said as I took a deep breath and prepared for my feelings to be hurt.
“Kasha and I have been on and off since I was a kid. We’ve never broken up for real. Sometimes, we just go on breaks, and I’m almost positive that it will be the same this time around. I just don’t want to hurt you, Diamond.”
“Then why are you here?” I asked, pushing him off of me and gathering my clothes.
“What do you want, Diamond? I gave you the truth, and I gave you what you wanted. I don’t get it. I’ve never dealt with a pregnant girl and her emotions before. I’m taking you to the doctor first thing in the morning,” he said as he put his clothes back on.
“Whatever,” I said as I walked into the living room with Rena, who was already sleeping.
I didn’t even want Gee around me. I was being used. The marriage, I could deal with. But not a b
aby. I would be looking into abortions as soon as he got the fuck up outta my sight. I don’t know what I was thinking.
Chapter Two
Gee
When it came to Diamond, it was no winning. I was damned if I did and damned if I didn’t. I should have listened to Brewster when he told me to keep things professional. This was the craziest shit ever; I was dealing with emotions from a woman who didn’t really belong to me.
“I’ll come by in the morning to pick you up. Cool?” I asked as I walked toward the door.
She didn’t respond, so I just walked out and went to my car. Most women appreciated when you told them the truth, but not Diamond. She wanted to the truth sprinkled with cherries and a lie. That just wasn’t me. I would be lying if I said that I had zero feelings for her because I did. It was hard not to care about Diamond. She was truly a good person at heart. But so was Kasha, and that’s where my heart was. I simply wasn’t ready to give up on us just yet.
On the way home, I tried to call Kasha. Like always, I got no response. Things were simply getting weird for us. She’s never not answered me for two whole months. I was worried now. I even tried calling her people, but they had new numbers. This was all new to me. If I didn’t know any better, I would think that she was done with me for real this time. But why? I’d never done wrong to her. It’s like for the last three years, we’ve been going through this rough patch, and I wanted like hell to understand. She used to come and see me all of the time, then it died down to a few times a year. The distance did us good, but the emotional strain was no fun. I missed her.
When I finally got home, I checked my messages and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. I almost called Diamond, but decided against it. She needed time, and me being a gentlemen to her ass did me absolutely no justice. The last thing I wanted to do was hurt her. What type of man would I be? The first night I made love to her, I didn’t know it would fuck shit up this fast. If I would have known that, I would have stayed home. Wouldn’t have even kissed her. Now she’s just at home thinking I’m some type of bitch made nigga, and that’s far from the truth.
While I was sitting down watching TV, I remembered that I needed to call Eric back. But I didn’t have to because he was calling me. “Yo, Eric?”
