She hated that she was getting all sappy on him. She wasn’t the sappy type but right now she couldn’t control it.

“Are you okay? Did I hurt you?” The compassion in his eyes made it even harder to stop the powerful emotions.

He pulled his cock out, dropped her feet to the floor and moved up to work on the ropes that bound her.

“I’m fine.” She was finally able to sniff back the tears. “I’ve just never felt this good before. I guess it was a little too much of a good thing.”

“Oh, good.” He let out a long breath, relaxed and then smiled down at her. “You can never have too much of a good thing. I’m going to make sure you see that over and over and over again.”

Blake leaned down and kissed her on the forehead while he continued to work to untie the ropes.

Her wrists tingled a little bit but he rubbed them and then pulled her against his chest as complete relaxation took over and she started to fall asleep. She probably shouldn’t, probably should stay alert, ready for action in case danger found them again but the past couple days were taking their toll and she felt safe in Blake’s arms. Safe for the first time in her life.

  Chapter Ten

Blake didn’t move until he felt Crystal find complete relaxation in his arms. But even when he knew she was sound asleep he stayed there holding her. He didn’t plan on getting any sleep tonight, knew any creaking or car sounds from the road would keep him from finding real rest. It was better that way anyway. He couldn’t let his guard down. Even with all the precautions he had taken they weren’t safe. She may never be safe again. Jail might have been a better option for Crystal. He probably should have left the girl alone. Not that he regretted any of the time he got to spend with her but he wasn’t so sure this whole ordeal had made her life any better.

When 5:00 a.m. finally rolled around Blake moved away from her gently and walked across the room to flip the television on. It was time for the news and he wanted to see if there was anything about the killings and drug ring being released to the public, wanted to see if his or Crystal’s pictures were being spread over the nation, needed to see how diligent he would have to be about not letting anyone see them. The first rays of sunlight filtered through the curtains so the light from the TV wouldn’t be noticed by anyone outside.

Blake pressed the power button and then turned the volume down so it was barely audible from a few inches away. He didn’t want to wake up Crystal and more importantly he didn’t want to alert anyone from the hotel that there was someone in the room. They probably would safe here for a few more hours but needed to be gone by mid-morning, before there was a good chance of anyone checking in to this room. And the worst part of it all was he didn’t have a plan…yet.

A few minutes later Blake saw images of the spokesperson from the DEA splashed across the screen and then police officers being led away in handcuffs by men on his team. Blake turned the volume up a little bit, needing to not miss a word.

“Police involved in drug distribution were arrested today in a major hit against the Moline Cartel.”

Blake held his breath, didn’t move a muscle as he listened intently. They cut to a clip of the DEA spokesperson standing at a podium with a large, black microphone near her face.

“There were several members of the Miami Police Department arrested today on charges of involvement in drug distribution for the Moline Cartel. This was a huge step in the war on drugs. I am not at liberty to release names or details of the police involvement at this time but it is definitely forward progress for the city of Miami. Thank you.” She nodded and stepped back from the podium.

Reporters were yelling questions and badgering her for more information but she just waved as she walked away and said a few muted “I’m sorrys” and “I can’t comment further”.

It looked as if Mason had done it. He had found and taken down all four of the cops involved. It was over. The plan had worked. The men Crystal had contact with had been caught and she could go home. It might never be safe for her, she might have to take on a new identity but the cops had been caught and the drug cartel would take a big hit because of it.

Crystal looked so peaceful, lying there with her dark hair splayed across the pillow, getting much-needed sleep and he was in no hurry to get back. Blake would let her sleep a little longer and then they could drive back to Miami and finish up this whole ordeal. But finishing it suddenly felt a little bittersweet.

  * * * * *

An hour later he drove down the coastline toward Miami with Crystal in the passenger seat. Part of him was relieved the mission was over, but it had turned out to be the damn best operation he had ever worked on. None of the others had perks even close to finding a woman like Crystal.

Going to the Dungeon to get his rocks off was one thing. It did keep him from being a “grumpy bastard all the time” like Mason had claimed it would when he invited Blake. But having one woman, falling in love, waking up in a bed next to her every day was a whole different ball game. One he definitely wanted to try out.

Crystal sat in the passenger seat looking nervous and he hoped she wouldn’t have anything to make her nervous anymore. Hell, he would do everything he could to make sure of it.

Blake stopped at a convenience store and went in to buy a phone and then decided to grab ice cream for both of them. He wasn’t even sure why but hoped she didn’t think it was cheesy when he came back with a cone in each hand.

“Strawberry or mint chocolate chip?” He offered her the choice, didn’t know what flavor she liked, didn’t know a lot of things about Crystal. He did know the things that mattered most. Knew she was beautiful and strong and his perfect mate.

“I’ll have strawberry. Thank you.” Crystal smiled and blushed a little.

For a girl raised on the streets she sure seemed innocent sometimes.

Blake finished his cone quickly and then took the phone, activated it and then dialed Mason’s number before he pulled out of the parking lot. He needed to make sure everything was safe before he brought Crystal back into the city.

“So is it over? Did we get them all?” Blake asked.

“Yeah it is.” Mason let out a long sigh. “Craig was the leak on our side. I didn’t see that one coming but Jeff found calls from him to the officer he was supposed to take down right before we went in. They ended up shooting each other. The other two went down without a fight, they’re sitting in jail, right where they belong.”

“Great. We’re on our way in to headquarters. I have Crystal with me. We should be there in about twenty minutes.”

“Sounds good, man. See you soon.”

Blake clicked the phone shut and relaxed a little. She might not ever be safe, that was hard to determine when working like guys like this but the imminent danger to Crystal was over. The mission had been successful.

Blake pulled his car into the paved lot in front of several large buildings and parked but Crystal didn’t want to go in. She wanted to stay in that hotel on the beach with Blake and pretend as if none of this ever happened.

He gave her his word she wouldn’t be punished for the drug transporting if she cooperated and she had cooperated but Crystal knew how the system worked. He wasn’t in charge of the whole department and any of the people above him could change the rules at any time and throw her in jail for her crime. They got what they wanted, didn’t need her anymore.

The police were like that. She’d heard from her mother about the promises made by the cops to get the information they wanted and then forgetting about their promises or changing the rules and throwing her in jail anyway.

Crystal had no reason to believe things would be any different for her. No reason except for Blake anyway. His confidence, his belief in the system gave her some assurance that things were going to be okay.

“You ready to go in?” Blake asked.

“I guess.” She wasn’t but delaying it wasn’t going to do any good. Might as well get it over with. Her hands were sweaty, every muscle i
n her body tense as Blake shut off the engine.

He opened his door and went to the trunk to grab the backpack with the cocaine. Then he came around to open her door. Blake walked beside her through the lot and into the building. He didn’t hold her hand like she wanted him to but under the circumstances it wouldn’t be appropriate for him to do that.

He held the door for her and then led her to the back of the building, to the Diversion Program Manager’s office. She hadn’t heard of that title before but whoever was in there must be in charge because it was the biggest office and a corner one. Crystal let out a long breath and steadied herself. Holy crap, he wasn’t messing around, taking her straight to the top guy. Guess it was better than beating around the bush. At least she would know her real fate soon.

Crystal would be able to handle whatever came next. She just hoped like hell it wouldn’t be too bad.

“Mason, this is Crystal. Crystal, my partner Mason.”

“The Diversion Program Manager has a partner?” It was a dumb question and one that didn’t really matter but it slipped out her mouth before she had the chance to stop it.

“Not really. We were partners when I first started so I never stopped referring to him as that. Neither of us really has a partner anymore.”

“Why don’t you have a partner?”

“I’ve been pretty much going deep undercover by myself lately, no space in missions like that for a partner.” Blake winked at her but she just stared.

Maybe she would get out of this after all. Maybe Blake would be able to keep his word. If he called the Diversion Manager his partner, the chances were good he had enough pull to actually do it.

“Thank you for your help with this, Crystal. We took down a lot of dirty cops because of you.” Mason didn’t smile as he spoke and that made Crystal a little bit nervous. Was he preparing her for the bad news?

“Yeah. Anytime.” Crystal hoped the sarcasm in her voice wasn’t too obvious.

  “Hopefully not,” Blake mumbled.

“I’m sorry you had to go through so much. While I can’t guarantee you immunity from any drug transporting charges, I don’t see any reason why the agreement we had written up at the beginning of this shouldn’t go through. You held up your part of the bargain and I thank you for stepping up and doing the right thing.”

“Really?” She worked to keep too much enthusiasm out of her voice. “You think I’m going to be let go, not have to serve any time?”

She wasn’t sure she could believe it. She had been caught by a DEA agent in the possession of drugs, people in her world didn’t just get to go free after something like that.

“Yes really. You were a great help to us and from what Blake’s told me you were forced into doing the running for the Molines.”

“This is so amazing.” Her voice cracked and Crystal didn’t know what else to say. She wasn’t going to jail and that was a huge relief. She wanted to cry but she held back the tears, held back all the emotions flooding through her. Now wasn’t the time.

Blake crossed his arms in front of his chest and shifted his weight from foot to foot as if he was nervous about something. “I was wondering if I could use a couple of my vacation days sometime soon. I want to make sure Crystal is safe, keep an eye on her for a little while.”

“Sure. You have plenty of days saved up. You were going to get desk duty anyway and we both know how much you would enjoy that.” Mason looked over at Crystal. “The guy hasn’t taken a day off, not even a sick day that I can remember.”

“I don’t get sick.” Blake puffed out his chest a little and it was damn sexy.

“I need your gun and badge, so try to stay some place safe, maybe go to the beach. Take a week or two. Start today. I’ll deal with the paperwork and drama here. That’s what they pay me the big bucks for.”

“Are you sure?” Blake looked hesitant. Probably hard for a guy like him to ask for time off.

“Yes, I’m sure. You deserve it. Go and have some fun. I know you’ll both be cleared. Enjoy a margarita and a good-looking woman in the sunshine.” Mason grinned knowingly and Crystal wondered exactly how much he did know.

“Thanks, man.” Blake shook Mason’s hand and then hurried Crystal out of the building. She was relieved and curious about what he had planned with his sudden vacation time.

When they climbed into the car and shut the door, she asked, “What are you going to do for the next week?”

“Spend every last second with you…that is, if you’re willing.”

“That depends. What exactly do you have in mind?” It didn’t depend on anything really. She would go anywhere with him, do anything he wanted.

“I have a friend who’s always offering to loan me his sailboat. I thought I might take you out on the ocean, keep you tied up for the entire week.”

“It sounds amazing.” And it did. Crystal loved the idea of spending time with him when she wasn’t running from something, where she could just relax and enjoy Blake the entire time.

He could sure keep her tied up for a week, keep her tied up for as long as he wanted. It sounded like heaven.

  Epilogue

Two months later Crystal sat in Blake’s kitchen on a barstool at the counter, watching him cook some fancy pasta dish with shrimp and wine. He was an amazing cook. It wasn’t surprising; he was amazing at everything he did.

Blake poured white wine into a glass and handed it her. Then he dished up two plates of pasta and set one in front of her and the other right beside it.

  “You spoil me.”

“Yep.” He grinned and walked around the counter to sit next to her. “And I’m never going to stop so you better get used to it.”

She liked the sound of that but didn’t know if he really meant it or if his words were just an exaggeration.

Crystal couldn’t imagine a man like Blake wanting to spend his life with a girl like her but he made it clear regularly that she was the only one he was interested in, the only woman he wanted.

  At least for right now.

“I have something I want to ask you.” He looked nervous as he dug into his front jeans pocket.

“Okay.” His nervousness made her nervous and she swallowed hard.

“Crystal, I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” He cleared his throat and paused.

This wasn’t really happening, he wasn’t really saying these words, asking for forever with her.

Tears came to her eyes and her throat clenched up, not letting her respond at all.

Blake held a silver band with a huge, sparkly, square diamond in a shaky hand. He moved it toward her.

“Will you marry me?” He looked into her eyes.

It was happening, she couldn’t see, couldn’t breathe.

“But what about my drug-mule past? What about your job?” She wanted so badly to say yes but she couldn’t let him throw everything away for her. She loved him too much to do that.

“My boss knows and accepted it, the guys that I work with never saw you, don’t know what went down. It’s all yesterday’s news and no one cares anymore. But even if they did, I wouldn’t let that stop me. I love you too much to let anything get in the way.”

“Really?” The tears flowed now, she couldn’t stop them. Her cheeks were wet and her jaw shuddered.

“Yes really.” He grabbed the ring between two fingers and stared at it before he looked over at her again. “So…will you marry me?”

“Yes.” Crystal squeaked out the one word and her heart tried to soar right out of her chest. She never expected this, never expected anyone to offer her forever, but she sure wanted to spend her forever with the one man she truly loved, trusted and respected more than any other person on this planet.

“Good.” Blake let out a relieved breath and slipped the ring onto her finger with a shaky hand.

“Yeah, good.” She grinned, knowing she was going to be Mrs. Blake Sierzan, the luckiest woman in the world.
