Dream On Page 13

“Okay, fine. But, for one, I locked the deadbolt. And two, the guy spent months as an uninvited guest in my body. He owes me at least a night in his apartment.”

“Fair point.” My smile refused to stay hidden. “Do you wonder what all he did with your body?”

“Uh, I’d rather not. But, I know what he didn’t do, no matter how much he wanted to.” He wrapped his arm around my waist and slid me across the sheet. “We should really focus on that.” He brushed his lips over my neck.

  “Good call.”

After several failed attempts, we finally got out of bed, made a pit stop at The Java Cafe and headed back to my house.

Listening to him moan over how good his coffee was, I shot him a look.

“No offense, but it’s been a long time since I drank coffee.”

“I swear, if the words ‘better than sex’ come out of your mouth right now–”

“No, not better. A very close second, but not better.”

I nudged him with my shoulder.

“Hey, don’t spill the coffee.” He grinned and threw his arm around me pulling me closer.

His fingers traced the leather cord around my neck. “I’ve been meaning to ask, what is this?”

“Oh, that psychic, Nina, gave it to me.”

  He arched his eyebrow.

“It protects my body when I’m not in it.” I glanced at the vial and back at him.

“So, that’s why Nadine couldn’t get in.”

“Apparently so. I’m just glad it worked.”

“Wait, you didn’t know if it would work going in?” He stopped walking and stared at me.

  I shook my head.

“You’re crazy, Emory.” His mouth twitched and he started walking again. He shook his head slightly.

“Now we just need to get you one,” I said while wondering where Nina got it and what other kind of charms this person made. Though I hadn’t enjoyed it at the time, I had to admit having a whip bracelet like Nadine wore would be pretty badass.

“I don’t know about that.” Grayson’s comment pulled my attention back to him. “I may not be dreamwalking much–if ever again.”

“You will eventually. It’ll call to you. We can do it together, and when we do, you’ll need your body protected, too.”

“Maybe.” He looked up, still not sounding convinced.

“I kind of hoped Morpheus would have a new business partner.” I looked at him.

“I think I’d like that–though I hoped to be a lot more than just a business partner.” He smiled and gave me a sidelong glance.

I shrugged and peeked back in his direction. “You are.”

He looked straight ahead and attempted to hide a smile. “Good to know.”

We reached the entrance to my apartment building. I stepped forward to get the door. “Here we are.”

He grabbed my hand and spun me to face him. “We. I like the sound of that.”

I placed my hand, still wrapped in his, against his chest and tilted my head. “I love the sound of that.”

He leaned in and kissed me. “I love you.”

Hearing those words stirred something inside of me, a sense of rightness–completion. The old man’s words came back to me as realization settled in. I’d found what was missing. My spirit and body were disconnected, torn between two worlds and now, with Grayson here, I’d become whole again.

“I love you, too.” I whispered back, my lips tickling as they rubbed against his.

He turned and grabbed the door, holding it open for me. “This business partnership, is it like a fifty-fifty split?”

I pretended to think it over. “I was thinking more like ninety-ten.”

He feigned shock. “Even though I’m sleeping with the boss?”

I swatted at him. “Let’s go home.”

“Home.” He smiled. “I definitely love the sound of that.”
