  'Not any wife, my dearest love, just one particular one. The^ one I plotted and schemed to win by appealing to her for assistance in mastering the art of courtship, her courtship,' he stressed, 'had I but dared own up to it. How else could I have got near enough to make you aware of me as a potential husband? Who but you would have taken the trouble to try to put a sparkle on rough jet?'

  She stared. 'Black-hearted rogue!' she gasped, then melted into laughter that was silenced by lips imprinting and demanding love.

  'Promise you'll always love me!' begged the tall, imposing skipper of men.

  And was reassured by a look from blue eyes so dependent they begged leave of him to live.
