“You mean besides to make you squirm?” he asked, and I could hear the charming smile that was on his face.

  “Yeah, what’s the real reason?”

“I need you to meet me,” he said plainly.

  “Okay. Where? When?” I asked.

“There’s a café down the street from the safehouse. Meet me there in an hour.” His stern tone told me his plans weren’t up for negotiation.

“In an hour? How am I supposed to do that?” I protested. “He’s here.”

“I know he is, and if you keep raising your voice, he’s going to hear you and wonder what your conversation is about. I’m not worried about how you do it. You’ll figure something out. You always do, Maggie. That’s why I know I can count on you. One hour.” He hung up.

I looked down and noted the time on my phone. I had an hour to distract Blade or get him out of my room. Then, I had to meet Axel at the café right down the street. Everything was right down the street. They couldn’t have picked a better location for a safehouse.

I looked at Blade again, standing in my kitchen, putting away the clean dishes and getting started on the trash. I didn’t know how I was going to get him out of the room. Anything I did wouldn’t give me the time I needed to go meet with Axel, and most of it wouldn’t have been believable anyway.

I considered telling him I wasn’t feeling well, but I could hear him telling me, “Don’t worry, I’ll stay with you and make sure you’re okay. Do you need anything?” They probably had all the medicine I might have needed downstairs somewhere, defeating any chance for a trip to the store to pick something up for me.

My heart pounded in my chest, and my breath came in short bursts. I could feel the minutes ticking away while I sat and stared at him, helplessly trying to figure out a way I could get him out or distract him so I could go meet my ex and get further details in his plan to take down the Marauders MC.

It even occurred to me to just tell him flat out what was going on, but Axel was watching. He was probably even listening. If I tried to warn Blade, it was all over. Someone would have taken us out as soon as either one of us tried to do anything about it.

The only other option I had was to distract him so he wouldn’t notice I’d left. And there was only way I knew how to do that. But I was on my period. Damn period was always messing up my plans. It never came at a convenient time.

But my mouth wasn’t on a period. I even had the perfect excuse for wanting to give my hero, my protector, head. It was going to be his reward for being so good to me, for helping me, and for saving me from those awful men down at the auction – those men who grabbed me and fondled my body without my permission, whose hands had been rough, demanding.

As I thought about the things I was going to say to coax him into the bedroom, I could feel my own desire growing wet for him. There was no doubt about it: I wanted Blade. Even as I was thinking about ways to trick him, it excited me. My insides quivered with desire as I thought about taking him over to the bed and throwing him down so I could handle him myself.

Was it possible I wanted more than just sex with this man? Was it possible I cared about him? Was that why I was having such a hard time getting up and going through with the plan to screw him over? I didn’t know for sure. I had never been great at analyzing my own feelings. I had only ever been great at acting and moving forward.

Blade was the first man who’d ever given me the opportunity to sit back and analyze what I felt and what I was doing. Usually, it was just go, go, go! But not with him.

My phone buzzed, and I looked down. It was a text, from Axel.

  Tick-tock, tick-tock, Maggie.

He was threatening me. I had to figure something out, right away. I had to go, or else he was liable to send someone in to handle us.

“Fuck it,” I said, getting up from the bed. If I played ball with Axel, everyone was safe. Or, I was safe, at least.

I left the TV on to generate background noise as I crept into the kitchen. I stood at the entrance to the room and watched him as he dried the dishes and went to put them up. After he put up the leftovers and moved the trash out of the way, he grabbed a couple of disinfectant wipes and wiped down the counter.

“You didn’t have to do all this,” I said.

“Why not? It’s the least I could do to help,” he said back.

If he’d only known he wasn’t helping at all. If anything, he was making what I had to do that much harder.

  Chapter 22

  Blade

“Thank you,” Maggie said, stepping up behind me and wrapping her arms around my waist.

It didn’t surprise me that she’d come into the kitchen, especially after hearing parts of her conversation on the phone I didn’t know she had. Something was up. I’d overheard snippets of what she was saying to whoever was on the other line. And the hushed voice she’d used on the phone was a dead giveaway.

“So, who was on the phone?” I asked her.

“Just an old friend who wants to meet up soon,” she said with a smile on her face. “I told her I’ll find some time when I’m not busy or preoccupied.”

  I nodded and laughed.

“Do you need any help in here?” she asked me.

“No, I’m almost all done,” I said, tossing the wipes into the trashcan.

“What else do you have to do?” she asked me.

“I need to take your trash out.” I nodded at the full trashcan.

“Don’t fuss over that right now.” She pushed me against the counter and ran her hands over my shirt. Her fingers greedily reached for me through the fabric.

“Hey, what’s gotten into you?” I asked.

“I’m just feeling so grateful,” she said. Her red hair spilled over her face, and she reached to push some of it back from her eyes. “You’ve really done a lot for me, and you didn’t have to,” she continued, pressing her body against mine.

I started to push her back, but she leaned up and took my lower lip between her teeth, pulling and sucking it into her mouth. She grabbed the waist of my jeans and pulled me to her. My desire started to awaken between my legs, silencing the worries and concerns I had entered her room with, but bringing other concerns to light.

Why was she suddenly being so aggressive? It wasn’t exactly a turn-off, but it seemed out of character for her. “Hey, are you feeling okay?” I asked her, pushing back on her shoulders a little.

“I’m fine. I just want to thank you for all you’ve done. You’ve really gone above and beyond for me. It just…means a lot to me that you would do that, that you would give of yourself so selflessly for me.”

Where the hell was this kind of talk coming from?

“Let me wash my hands,” I said, pulling away from her. I needed to get the harsh cleaning chemicals off my hands before I let her go any further with me. While I scrubbed my hands under the hot running water, Maggie put her hands back around me and started to run them down the front of my jeans.

Her body pressed against me from behind as she groped for me and stroked my legs. Then, she ran her thin fingers over my bulging length, through my jeans. She started to unzip my pants as I turned around, needing a paper towel.

She pouted as I sidestepped her to grab something to wipe my hands with.

“Have I done something wrong?” she asked, and I froze. She was playing a dangerous game with me by getting pouty acting like I’d hurt her feelings.

“What?” I asked, stunned. “Where the hell is all of this coming from?”

“I’m sorry. I just thought that maybe you felt like I did,” she said to me.

“Whoa, hold on.” I put my paper towel on the counter and took her face in my hands, holding it up to mine. “What are you talking about?” I asked her.

She didn’t say anything. She grabbed my forearms like she was holding onto me, and she pressed her lips against mine. Her tongue pressed between my lips, finding my tongue and wrapping around it.

My desire for her was growing to an ache. My shaft pressed hard a
gainst my jeans, reaching out for her, wanting to be inside her again. I felt her rubbing herself against me, driving me crazy. I longed to be unleashed by her hands.

She pulled back from our kiss and kissed my cheek, my jawline, my neck. Her hands pushed against my chest again, holding me back against the counter. She pushed on my shirt, pulling it up to reveal my stomach to her. Her fingers touched my skin and sent ripples of pleasure through my body. My hardening length surged for her between my legs.

She wrapped her fingers around the bulge in my jeans and stroked me, running her hands up and down along my length. She looked up at me with hunger in her eyes. She panted with desire.

“What’s gotten into you?” I asked.

“I just want to give you a token of my appreciation for everything you’ve done,” she said.

Then, she took me by the belt on my jeans and pulled me with her to the bed. She turned me around and pressed herself against me again, kissing my neck and running her hands up and down my shirt. She pushed me back onto the bed.

She sank down between my knees and started working my belt with her thin fingers. The pressure against my cock let up when she unbuckled the belt and pulled it away. Then, again, when she opened my jeans and pulled me out of my boxers with those same deft fingers. I put a hand on the back of her head, running my fingers into her hair, as she positioned her lips over the tip of my head.

I was so hard I thought I could feel the lack of blood flowing to the rest of my body. Every nerve ran through my shaft up to my head. As her lips parted to accept me into her mouth, waves of pleasure flowed through my whole body. She gripped my base with her fingers and wrapped her lips around me perfectly. She slid down my shaft and pulled hard as she slid back up.

“Oh, fuck, Maggie,” I panted as I guided her head up and down with my hand. I tilted my head back onto the bed.

My body shuddered as she sucked me into her mouth. She pulled her hand back from me and slid down again, taking all of me into her mouth. I felt my head pressing against the back of her mouth, entering her throat. She didn’t gag, but I could feel her tongue and throat tightening around me.

“Yeah, baby, just like that,” I said as I put both hands on the back of her head. I pressed my hips up into her mouth and felt the sheets around me tighten as she gripped them in her hands.

I rocked my hips back and forth, fucking her mouth. She moaned against my shaft as I did. I was so close. I could feel my orgasm working its way up. I felt my ecstasy growing into a wave of pleasure that was bound to crash into her mouth.

I held her in place as I thrust myself into her. She gripped the bed tighter and tighter around me as if she were bracing herself. I pressed harder and harder into her mouth, thrusting faster and faster I got closer.

I gripped her and held myself deep inside her mouth. I slid back a little as my body began to shake.

“I’m going to cum,” I told her, and she moaned as I erupted in her mouth.

I felt my warmth fill her mouth, surrounding me as she started sliding up and down along my shaft again. Her throat worked and tongue continued to work me as she swallowed every drop of me. Her fingers wrapped around my base again. She stroked me with her lips and fingers, finishing me, emptying me in her mouth.

I lay back and let my arms fall out at my sides. I felt the air in the room hit my bare shaft as she pulled her mouth away from it. My body slowly came down, letting my manhood fall back into my boxers.

“Let’s get you more comfortable,” Maggie said as she pulled off my boots and slid my jeans down. She then grabbed my ankles and turned me so I was lying on the bed.

“Damn, Maggie,” I groaned, still reeling from my climax.

I reached out and took her hand, pulling her down onto the bed with me. I didn’t open my eyes as she snuggled against me and rested her head on my chest. I stroked her hair and felt the relaxed heaving of her chest as she breathed next to me.

“So, it was good?” she asked timidly.

“Oh, it was amazing,” I said, still breathless and starting to drift off to sleep. For a brief moment, my body tried to fight the exhaustion.

I rolled over and took Maggie in my arms. I felt like I should’ve said something else, but there wasn’t anything that really needed to be said. We’d spoken with our bodies, and we’d said everything we needed.

I kissed the top of her head and rested my head on one of her pillows. My heart, pounding through my rib cage, began to slow down to a normal rhythm. I followed its beat in my head with my eyes closed. It seemed like it was leading me off into the darkness behind my eyelids.

Maggie sighed against my chest. My body finally relaxed and drifted away.

  Chapter 23

  Maggie

I listened for his heartbeat to slow down to the normal, pumping rhythm in his chest. I waited for his breathing to slow, for the heave of his chest to level back out. His arms were wrapped around me, but his grip relaxed as he drifted off to sleep.

After a few minutes, I carefully slid out of his arms and off the bed. He mumbled something in his sleep, seemed to reach for me, and rolled over onto his other side. I carefully stood up and walked away from the bed.

I grabbed my phone and checked the time. I only had a few minutes left to go to meet Axel. I texted him to let him know I was still coming.

On my way now. Finally got away.

I silenced my ringer and stuffed my phone in my pocket. I grabbed the key from the kitchen counter. Then, before walking out, I grabbed my beer from the table and took a swig of it, washing down Blade’s taste, still lingering in my mouth.

I hadn’t known what else to do to distract him. I had used oral sex before to get out of situations, so I figured it was as good a trick as any.

I quietly opened and closed my front door and locked it using the key. I hurried down the hallway, not knowing how much time I would have before he woke up.

I fished my phone back out once I got outside in the cool night air.

Did you happen to bring any of my things, like my ID or a jacket?

  No. Just meet me. Hurry.

I made my way down the street. The lights were coming on in the shops, along the sidewalk, and in the windows in the upper floors of every building I passed. The night was dark and cold, but it was beautiful. I would have enjoyed the walk with someone like Blade, someone I actually wanted to be around, someone I was starting to have feelings for.

You’re doing this for him, though, I reminded myself as I walked down the sidewalk.

I brushed by other pedestrians, huddled in their coats from the incessant winter chill in the air. There were only a few people walking around, and they seemed to blend in with their surroundings.

When I spotted the sidewalk dining in front of the café, Axel stood up from his table so I would see him. I actually considered turning and running back to the safehouse. I considered waking Blade up and telling him everything that was going on. If I weren’t sure of the danger he would be in had I done that, I would have. But I couldn’t risk it.

Instead of running, I decided to see the plan through, except I realized I didn’t have a plan. I was going to spy on Blade and the Marauders until I figured out a way to used it against Axel. The thing was, I hadn’t figured out a way yet.

“You look cold,” Axel said, towering over me. “Let’s get a table inside where it’s warm.”

He held the door for me and let me walk in front of him. Where the hell had this version of Axel been the whole time we were together? I wondered, did he exist the whole time? Was he showing the world this version of himself while he was giving me the worst he had to offer?

Inside the café, the warmth and the smell of coffee enveloped me. I realized I craved the warm beverage. I breathed in the smell of the different brews all going at once. It was a warm, comforting scent. It made me feel safe, even though I was there with one of the most despicable men in the city.

“Here, let’s have a seat,” Axel said. “They’ll send some
one to us.”

The café wasn’t like any café I’d ever been in before. Most cafés were tiny, offering just a few seats at a few small tables, but the place we were in was as large as any other restaurant. They even had full menus at each table, detailing everything they sold, from coffee to pastries to deli sandwiches.

“So, are they not giving you jackets at the safehouse?” Axel asked as he picked up his menu to glance over it quickly.

I should have known he wasn’t going to be able to resist taking jabs at me. “I’ve got one. I just forgot to bring it with me,” I told him, not looking up from the menu. I fought back the blush that tried to break out across my face at the mention of something that was so typical of me – forgetting things I actually needed.
