On Her Trail

by Marcelle Dubé

Her first sight of it almost brought tears to her eyes. She hadn’t been back to the clearing in over thirty years. She, Sawyer and James had spent so much time here…Now it was a shell, its sod roof long dead, its broken windows staring back at her blindly.

A movement caught her eye and she turned slowly. James and Sawyer stood at the edge of the woods, staring at her.

“It’s time for you to go now,” murmured Fay. “I’ll join you when my time comes.”

Sawyer had been the passion of her youth, their love made tragic by his disappearance. But James was the love she had grown into and grown to appreciate. She belonged to both of them, just as surely as they belonged to her.

“Go,” she whispered. “Let me be.” They turned away, slowly walking toward the trees. They glanced over their shoulders at her, then at each other. Finally they walked into the trees and were gone.

Fay stared at the trees for a long time. Then she turned and headed home.

  About the Author

Marcelle Dubé grew up near Montreal. After trying out a number of different provinces—not to mention Belgium—she settled in the Yukon, which isn’t a province at all and where the bears outnumber the people. Undaunted, she started her family and now has two beautiful daughters. Her short fiction has appeared in On Spec magazine; Polaris: A Celebration of Polar Science; Open Space: New Canadian Fantastic Fiction; and Challenging Destiny, Issue 25. Polaris received the 2007 Canadian Science in Society Book Award and was a finalist for the Aurora Award, Canada’s readers’ choice award for science fiction and fantasy. On Her Trail is her first novel.
