Lucas stood, as well. “Perhaps you and Jolie would like to join us.”

“Actually,” Simon offered, looking and sounding a bit sheepish, “that’s why I’m here. Jolie reminded me that I was supposed to invite you two to our house for dinner as soon as you were both here and available.”

Victoria and Lucas exchanged a look. “We’re free,” Victoria said, “if you’re certain this is not too short of a notice for Jolie.”

Simon shook his head. “Trust me. She will be prepared. Since our move to Houston she has decided to stay home. She prepares at minimum a three-course meal each evening.”

Lucas chuckled. “Sounds like you may need a raise, Ruhl.”

Simon smiled. “That’s the other thing. She has recently joined the extreme couponing movement. We now have stockpiles.” He adjusted his tie. “It’s quite unsettling.”

They closed up the office and strolled across the parking lot. Victoria was glad to be out for the evening. She had spent far too much time cooped up with the case file of monsters.

She hooked an arm around the arm of each man. But there was no need to worry. The Colby Agency never failed a client. It wasn’t going to start now.

At the car she glanced over her shoulder. She frowned. Strange. She had the oddest feeling that she was being watched.

This case was getting to her.

Tomorrow would be a better day.

  It always was.
