The thing moved and squirmed in her hands and the maiden cut the cord and held it against her own breasts.

The Sangoma started screaming as the maiden took her prize and walked out of the hut in the direction of an old unused mine.

She knew that they were waiting for her and that her time had come to make the offering.

As the first rays of sun started creeping across the floor of the central hut, the room was silent and still. Warm shadows fell on the cold and open corpse of the old Sangoma, her blood pooled and dried now on the floor, footprints in red leading out the door.

The maiden praised the thing in her arms as she disappeared in the morning smoke. She carried the wrapped bundle in her arms and walked, as if in a trance, towards her destination.

  “Nkosi njalo!”
