“Beatrice, thanks for returning my call.” He sounded strained. “You know at the political science department, we take deadlines very seriously, right?” Her heart began to beat wildly. How could he know she was behind? How could he possibly know? “We’re especially interested in the deadline for your thesis because the implications of political issues in Europe over the last nine-hundred years impacting current policy is a brilliant concept.” How could he know? She was panicking.
“Are you still there, Beatrice?”
“Yes. I’m sorry. I know that deadlines are critical, sir, and I’m very glad you believe my thesis is worthy of the study I’ve put into it.” She was on the verge of tears. She would have to submit it again a year from now.
“Well, Beatrice. The point is…um…This is embarrassing. The academic coordinator has accidentally scheduled your thesis defense at the same time that two of the panel members are to present a paper in Geneva. We’ve talked it over, and you deserve to be heard, so if you insist, we will hold your review as planned. Still, if you could show extraordinary grace and allow us to set it for the twelfth of next month, the panel members would be very grateful.”
That gave her thirty-two more days. Thirty-two! “Well, sir. Conference’s such as the one in Geneva make our school’s reputation grow and are important. It will help to make my degree more valuable. My panel members will also certainly benefit from hearing presentations there as others attending will benefit from them, and I’m sure I’ll have a class or two with them in the course of my doctorate. I think my choice is very clear. I’m happy to present next month.”
When he spoke, he sounded so relieved that she almost giggled. “Oh, thank you Beatrice. I hope we’ve not put you out too much.”
“No sir. In fact, I wanted to go over a few things, and some horribly noisy neighbors were making proofreading difficult. Now, I can work through it here instead of renting a motel room and setting up my laptop there for the next few days. I think it worked out well all around for both of us.”
He chuckled. “You’re just saying that to be kind, Beatrice, but thank you.”
There were a few more pleasantries until they finally hung up. Beatrice walked to the computer. She only needed to get about five pages done per day now, and she spent a few hours taking care of her five for the current day. When she finished, it wasn’t even eight o’clock. She sat on her couch and then got up and walked onto her porch. She stared next door. Nothing. She kept staring. Still nothing. Finally, she fixated on the lawn. James’ lawn was scraggly and browning.
She walked up to his door and pounded on it. He opened the door, and she shouted, “Hey! Don’t you know that we water our lawns in this neighborhood?”
He stared at her in shock. Then, as comprehension dawned on him, he smiled and pulled her inside the house.
