Meanwhile, two children had tumbled from the other side of the carriage—a boy of four, who fairly leaped out, and a girl of two, who insisted she could do it herself and repulsed her father’s assistance. Dora Campbell, however, did not refuse his hand, for her limbs were not so spry as they once had been, and her hair was a good deal grayer. By the time they had stepped down, the two youngsters were on the steps trying to work the heavy iron door latch. Edward hurried after them, hoping to make a more seemly entrance for his family.

Jamie hung back a moment. She had done the same thing on that first frightful day; then it was from awe and trepidation. Now her eyes sought out the inscription over the door. “Aut pax aut bellum.” The words had carried such dread when she had read them then. Yet she felt none of that at this moment, for at last the Graystone family had settled on peace, and thus there was no longer any fear.

Just then the door opened and Cameron Reily stepped forward to greet the family.

“Lord and Lady Graystone,” he said. “Welcome home!”
