And as useful as he was, Leo also didn’t know how to talk.
Alone on that dam, I forced myself to confront the truth. The water belonged to Slimeball, which meant the city belonged to Slimeball.
This wasn’t my city. I was just living in it.
Back at the garden, I filled the buckets from the water catch and packed as much food as I could fit into Leo.
I drove Leo until his battery died. We stopped to recharge, and drove again, repeating the cycle until night fell. On the next morning, an hour after sunrise, I found her.
She turned when she heard the soft hum of Leo’s engine coming up the road. Nina had tied the big green coat around her lean waist, and it swayed with her hips as she walked back toward me.
“Your plan is stupid,” I said when she came close enough to touch.
“You don't think I can survive on my own?”
“I know you can,” I said. “But where’s the fun in that? The end of the world is better with friends.”

Born in 1988, my full name is Matthew Gilbert Herron. I write science fiction fantasy under the pen name M.G. Herron. My first novel, The Auriga Project, was published in 2015.
