Rodeo Song

Nat and Caitlyn ushered her into the hall where Daddy waited. He kissed her forehead and offered his arm while Clay Warren escorted Mama to her seat.

In the lobby, Jenna peered through the windowed double doors into the sanctuary. Recently ordained, Nat’s husband, Lane, waited to perform the ceremony. The groomsmen, Bradley and Sebastian, stood beside Garrett. The man of her dreams looking positively scrumptious in a dove-gray tuxedo.

The wedding march began and her vision blurred. She blinked the moisture away as a quiet vibration started up.

“Wait.” Nat dug her cell phone out. Her eyes locked with Jenna’s. “I have to take this.”

The call they’d been waiting for—since they’d gotten news of the baby’s birth yesterday. Not that the call would change anything, but it would prove Garrett’s innocence to the rest of the world.

“Publicist Natalie Gray here. Yes, he’s tied up right now, but I’m authorized to receive the results. Password Rolling J. What have you got for me?” Natalie smiled. “Just as I expected. Yes, I’ll make sure he knows. Thank you.”

  “It’s over.” Jenna’s voice caught.

“Yes, it’s over. Hang on one more minute and I’ll leak the news to the press.” Natalie typed a quick text message. “Now, by the time you walk the aisle, everyone will know Garrett isn’t a father.”

“We knew it all along, but now everyone else will know, too.” Daddy patted her hand.

“How’s that for a wedding present?”

  “It’s perfect.”

Daddy had insisted on a one-on-one with Garrett after she’d accepted his proposal. Neither man had ever told her what was said, but Daddy had been Garrett’s biggest fan since.

  The wedding march began again.

“We better get out there or poor Garrett will think you bailed.” Caitlyn nudged Natalie to start the procession.

The double doors opened, and a nervous-looking Garrett caught sight of her then visibly relaxed.

Natalie entered the sanctuary followed by Caitlyn. As the song swelled, Daddy escorted her down the aisle. Her gaze locked with Garrett’s.

The aisle seemed to take an eternity, but finally she stood by his side.

“Who gives this woman to be married to this man?” Lane asked.

“Her mother and I.” Daddy offered her hand to Garrett and took his seat beside Mama.

She stood on tiptoe, leaning near his ear, and whispered, “Negative. Now everyone knows the truth.”

  Garrett’s lips grazed her cheek.

The music started. “Elusive Dream”—their Rodeo Song.

Peace registered in his gaze as he began singing to her. The deep baritone strong and pure with undying love for her.

  And her alone.
