  “I just worry about being a burden to you, Gianni. Given our age difference, I can’t help but think about what you’ll have to go through down the road.”

  “We’ll always take care of each other,” I said. “It’s a two-way street. And just because you’re older than I am, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be the one who’ll end up needing help. What if I were to get sick at some point?”

  “Then I’d devote my entire life to giving you the best possible care.” He said that so earnestly.

  “It’s the same for me, Zan. I love you, and that’s why you’ll never be a burden. Now please don’t worry about things that might never happen. It’s Christmas, and it’s our wedding night. This is a time for celebration.”

  He kissed me again and said, “You’re absolutely right.”

  Eventually, we got dressed and joined the party in the courtyard. A slow song was playing, and Zan drew me into his arms. As we swayed to the music, I looked around at our family and friends.

  Nana was dancing with her husband, and I chuckled when I noticed she was holding on to his rear end with both hands. Meanwhile, Christian and Shea were all wrapped up in each other on one of the lounge chairs, oblivious to the rest of the world. And my brother Dante, who’d become a grandfather recently, snuggled beside his husband Charlie while their grandbaby slept soundly on Dante’s chest.

  There was so much love all around us, and it was absolutely beautiful.

  But the most beautiful thing of all was the pure adoration I saw when I looked in my husband’s eyes. He smiled at me as he whispered, “Happy Christmas.”
