“Come on in, guys.” Jack said as he walked over to lil’ Jack, who was now constantly referred to as LJ, and gave him a kiss on the forehead, then turned to kiss Allison on the cheek.
“This makes me so sad to say this, but we can’t stay. LJ here is colicky. He has been crying relentlessly, and he will disrupt the wedding,” Allison said apologetically. “We are going to take him home, and if he feels better later, we will meet you guys at the reception. I really hate to miss it. Please tell Tamara how sorry I am.”
“You know she’ll understand. You go take care of that fella. Hopefully we’ll see you later.” Jack kissed Allison and LJ good-bye and shook Johnny’s hand. They really were a cute little family. He was glad that her father finally gave in and not only gave his blessing but agreed to perform their wedding ceremony. It had given new meaning to the term “shotgun wedding” when the bride’s water broke right after the groom had kissed his bride.
That brought his thoughts back to Tamara. He wanted to start a family with her so desperately. He had given her body time to heal, and they had promised each other that tonight after they were married they would stop using protection and see what God had in store for them. The idea of Tamara’s belly being full with his child was blissful.
“Jack, if we don’t get this show on the road, Tamara is going to skin you alive.” Rex made a mocking gesture of Tamara coming at him with a knife, and he and Shelby laughed.
“Very well. I shall go get your beautiful bride.” Bristow Sr. beamed at them all.
Just as he was about to leave, his wife walked in. “Cullen Bristow, what are you doing in here? We have a bride waiting to meet her groom at the end of the aisle. Now, you get your hide moving. Go on, go!” Colleen Bristow, a redheaded beauty among women, always called the shots in her marriage. She was a little firecracker who Bristow Sr. always willingly obeyed.
“Yes, dear,” Bristow said as he kissed his wife on the cheek. Shelby walked out with him to see to Tamara.
“See, that’s it right there. That’s why I won’t get married. I will not end up living my life in fear of a woman,” Rex vowed.
Colleen Bristow walked over to Rex and gently patted his cheek. “Oh, my dear young boy. I know you don’t want to believe it as so, but it is. Why, you’ve already met your future bride. Time will tell, and you will see.” She winked at Jack. “Now, are you ready, young man? Mustn’t keep your beloved waiting.”
Rex stormed out of the room in a huff in search of Shelby. They were supposed to walk down the aisle together as maid of honor and best man.
Jack took Colleen’s hand and threaded it underneath his arm to walk her to her seat. They were approaching the chapel when Jack asked, “Okay, I have to know. Who is she? Who is the woman who will change Rex Metcalf into a one-woman man?” As much as Jack had gotten a kick out of watching them antagonize Rex, he was starting to believe that maybe they were right. Maybe they had some sort of sixth sense about this sort of thing.
Colleen laughed. “Oh, dear boy, but look right there.” She smiled up at him. “Don’t you see it? He is walking with her right now. Shelby will be the one. This I know to be true. Yes, indeed, as sure as the sun will set today, she will steal his heart. Do you want to hear something funny, though?”
Jack nodded, surprised by the idea that Shelby and Rex might actually fall in love.
“That young lass, she doesn’t know it either.” Beaming with satisfaction, Colleen Bristow took her seat and gave Jack a light peck on his cheek.
Jack walked up to the front of the church and turned. The music began, and the doors to the chapel opened. In walked Tamara in a flowing gown of white silk. It was not a gaudy dress. It looked like the kind of classic dress you would see on a movie star from the 1940s. Her hair was done up in a French twist with little ringlets falling around the side of her face. She looked absolutely stunning. Jack smiled at Tamara and then looked up. Silently, he whispered the words, “Thank you.”
