Bacca and the Riddle of the Diamond Dragon

“Likewise,” said LadyBacc, giving them a good shake.
“And I think I know who this might be . . .” Bacca said excitedly, turning to his other guest.
“Yes,” said the Diamond Dragon with a smile. “As promised, here is the Pumpkin Dragon.”
“Wow!” Bacca said to the Pumpkin Dragon. “I’m so pleased to finally meet you.”
“I don’t see what all the fuss is about,” the Pumpkin Dragon said with a shy smile. “I’m just a dragon made of pumpkins. On our plane, dragons can be made of lots and lots of things.”
“I know,” said Bacca. “But it’s just . . . you’re a pumpkin! How cool is that!”
“Oh,” said the Pumpkin Dragon. “Well that’s a nice self-esteem boost. It actually makes me feel really good about myself, so thanks!”
“We also brought you something,” said the Diamond Dragon. With a nod, it indicated a large basket that the Pumpkin Dragon had been carrying in its teeth.
“What is it?” Bacca asked.
“Why don’t you open it up and look?” said the Diamond Dragon coyly.
The Pumpkin Dragon took a step back. Bacca carefully opened the top of the basket and an eerie red glow began to emanate from inside. Bacca peeked in, slightly alarmed. Most of the time an eerie red glow wasn’t a sign of good things to come. But the Diamond Dragon smiled reassuringly.
“It’s okay,” said the dragon. “Nothing’s going to hurt you.”
Summoning his courage, Bacca stuck his hand into the basket and pulled out a series of glowing red ingots. They were unlike anything he had ever seen. He knocked on them with his fist and tested their weight in his hands. They seemed to be stronger than diamonds, and lighter too. It was a totally unknown substance. Confused, Bacca placed them back in the basket and closed the lid.
“What are these?” Bacca asked.
“I don’t know if you remember,” said the Diamond Dragon. “But when we first met, I told you that if you helped us I would give you an entirely new crafting material. Something you’d never seen before. Something totally unknown to your server plane. Well, here it is. It is a crafting material called Dragonstone.”
“Wow . . .” said Bacca, nearly speechless. “Thank you.”
“What you decide to craft with it is up to you,” said the Diamond Dragon. “But choose wisely. Even in my homeland, Dragonstone is very scarce. Dragonstone weapons and armor are the rarest of all.”
“I understand,” said Bacca. “I’m honored. Thank you for the gift.”
“None of the dragons will ever forget what you did for us,” the Diamond Dragon said. “We will always be your friends. You can always call on us if you need anything. Anything at all.”
Bacca and LadyBacc looked at each other and smiled. Bacca suspected they had just had the same thought.
“Well,” said Bacca. “There is one thing you could do . . .”
The Diamond Dragon and the Pumpkin Dragon perched at the edge of the obstacle course that Bacca and LadyBacc had spent the afternoon crafting. The two dragons surveyed the strange expanse, and shared a confused glance. Bacca, LadyBacc, and several of Bacca’s other friends stood on a nearby platform. They were looking back at the dragons with great anticipation. Many other people had gathered around the edges of the course, to watch.
“So we just . . . chase you?” the Diamond Dragon asked.
“Exactly,” said Bacca. “You come after us, and we have to jump around these obstacles to try and get away. It’s really fun. We call it Dragon Escape.”
“Yes,” added LadyBacc. “It’s one of our best games. Usually we play with Ender Dragons from The End, but you two will be our distinguished guests of honor.”
“And we can use our powers of disintegration and destroy the blocks we touch?” asked the Pumpkin Dragon. “These blocks you spent all afternoon building? And you want us to do that?”
“Absolutely,” Bacca said. “That’s the whole point.”
“Hmm,” said the Diamond Dragon. “If you say so. I guess we’re ready.”
“Okay, great,” said Bacca. “Ready, everyone else? One . . . Two . . . Three!”
Bacca and his friends leapt up and started running through the obstacle course. The two dragons took off from their perch and began trying to catch the crafters. Every so often they careened into part of the obstacle course—usually just as a crafter was jumping away from it—and sent the structure exploding into nothingness.
BOOM! Went a row of blocks as the Diamond Dragon smashed through them.
CRASH! Went a platform as the Pumpkin Dragon flew into it and made it disintegrate.
“That’s the spirit!” Bacca said as he leapt from platform to platform.
“Yes, I see,” the Diamond Dragon cried. “This is a very fun game indeed.”
Bacca was having the time of his life, and so were his friends. And now even the dragons were apparently enjoying themselves. Everything was like it had been before his adventure . . . But no, that wasn’t quite right. Now he had new dragon friends, and friends in another server plane. So maybe, Bacca thought, it wasn’t exactly like it had been before. Maybe now it was even a little bit better!
Bacca didn’t know what he would use the Dragonstone ingots to craft. He realized that that was a big decision. He would think about it carefully for many days before finally selecting something to create. Or maybe he would just leave the ingots in a chest inside his castle, as a souvenir of his trip.
But he definitely knew one thing for certain . . .
As he raced across his obstacle course with a big smile across his face, Bacca was confident that the adventures with his new dragon friends were only just beginning!
