“I’m going to let you out soon enough,” she said. “We’re almost there. And when we get there, you and I are going to sit and have a nice heart to heart. Sound good?”
She got no answer but that was okay. She knew he could hear her.
“Hold on,” she said with a smile.
She hit the gas and started forward again. If her father continued his complaints, she did not hear. She turned the music back up and was reminded of her younger years as a teenager, when she didn’t have a care in the world. She supposed that even back then she had been planning this moment. She smiled at the synchronicity of it all as she drove through the night, forest on both sides and stars above.
