IN THE YEARS I HAVE SPENT working on this manuscript I have been fortunate in the help, encouragement and support of many people. Most of it was written while living on a small farm owned by my friends Sally Lee and Geoffrey Simpson, providing me with a place from which to retreat from the more insistent demands of daily life. At a point when I no longer knew whether the manuscript contained anything of interest to others, I showed it to Martin Harrison, whose enthusiasm persuaded me to continue, and who provided me with ongoing and invaluable editiorial advice. I was fortunate too in the support of Barbara Blackman, whose encouragement and practical help assisted me over the first hurdle towards publication. Thanks should also go to Mary Cunnane who brought a clear and professional eye to the later stages of the manuscript. From Julia Stiles I learned about good editing, and am forever humble before it. Thanks to Dr Julie Marcus for permission to quote from the letters of Olive Pink, and to Heather Curdie for her professional commitment to the book. Hamish Sewell saw the reverse side of the writing process, and Pam Lofts knows more of the inside story than most. To all these people I offer my gratitude and thanks.
