It took them a long time to get down the mountain between Julie’s arm and Sam exhaustion, they moved slowly. But late in the afternoon they finally made it to the ranch where Jake had insisted they go. “You both need rest, Chloe’s got rooms ready for both of you and she’ll call the doctor to look at Julie’s arm as soon as you get there,” he’d advised as they were leaving.

Chloe met them on the porch, firing off orders as she helped them in the house. Sam was practically stumbling when he got inside, but he was more concerned for Julie and her arm. He hadn’t been brave enough to really examine it, but he knew that there could easily be broken bones under all the bruising.

“We need to get her to the doctor right away,” he said, barely able to stand.

“The doctor is on her way. You need to get some rest yourself. I’ll take care of Julie, you go shower and get something to eat. The doctor should be done by then,” Chloe ordered, pointing down the hallway to an open door. “That’s your room, there are clean towels and a change of clothes on the bed.”

Sam opened his mouth to argue, then looked at himself he was filthy and so was Julie who was watching the entire exchange with a bemused expression on her face. Deciding that it was easier to give in that fight and that Julie was clearly in good hands, he trudged down the hall to the room Chloe had pointed to, he’d shower but food could wait. But when he got out of the shower, there was a tray heaped with food sitting on a little table by the window and he couldn’t walk away from it.

By the time he’d polished off the entire meal, he felt better, still exhausted but not the bone deep exhaustion of an hour ago. When he walked into Julie’s room, she was sitting up in the bed, a tray of food next to her, most of it was gone and she didn’t look as pale as she had when they’d gotten there.

“You look better,” he said, smiling at her.

“And I smell better,” she said, laughing.

Sam was happy to see Julie laughing and a huge weight was lifted from his heart, with a little time she’d be fine, both physically and mentally. He moved the food tray onto a table and sat down on the bed next to Julie and took her good hand in his. “I’m glad you’re feeling better. Has the doctor been here yet?”

  Chapter 10

Just then Faith Montgomery came through the door. “I have been and now I’m back,” she said, smiling at Sam. “I don’t think we’ve met, Carter and I have been out of the canyon, looks like we got back just in time.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” Sam said, realizing that this was one of his cousin’s wives.

“So, I have good news and bad news,” Faith said, sitting down on the other side of the bed. “There are no broken bones but there is deep bruising on the bones, it’s going to take a while to heal and it’s going to be painful for a long time.”

Julie breathed a sigh of relief that there were no broken bones, then asked, “How long before I can go back to work?”

“Well, I guess that depends on what you’re doing. If you’re thinking about going out in the field any time soon I’d rethink that, but I see no reason that you can’t go to the lab as soon as you feel up to it. Those bones are fragile now so limit your physical activity,” Faith advised.

Julie’s heart sank, there were only a couple of weeks of breeding season left and she’d have to miss it. Sam squeezed her hand and asked, “What if she was just there to watch?”

“If she’s not using that arm it shouldn’t be a problem, but don’t push it,” Faith answered, then took a deep breath. “There is one more thing we need to be concerned with, something we’d worry about with any animal bite.”

“Rabies,” Sam and Julie said in unison.

Faith laughed. “I see you’ve been well trained. Does that mean you’ve been vaccinated against it, Julie?”

“That and a bunch of other things. No researcher goes out in the field without current vaccinations,” Julie explained.

“Well, that’s good. We’ll pull some blood to see if you’ve got enough protection, it’s unlikely the wolf had rabies, but we can’t be too careful,” Faith said, opening the bag next to her and removing the supplies she’d need to take blood.

Sam and Julie exchanged a look, neither had thought about that possibility until just then. “How long until we’ll know?” Julie asked, her voice trembling a little bit.

“Oh, it’ll probably take about 24 hours, we’ll culture the wolf as well and that takes about 14 days. I really don’t think you have anything to worry about, we haven’t had a case of rabies in California for years. Now I’m going to chase everyone out while I get the samples I need.”

By the time Faith left, Julie was feeling much better thanks in part to the painkiller she’d insisted on giving Julie. She also gave her a hefty dose of antibiotics and left more of both for later. She promised to call with lab results as soon as she had them, recommended bed rest for Julie for a couple of days, and left a sling for Julie’s arm with orders to use it.

Julie felt the painkiller beginning to work, the pain in her arm subsided to a dull throb and her head got fuzzy. Sam pulled her into his arms, carefully avoiding her injured arm and kissed the top of her head. “Get some sleep, Chloe says you’re not going anywhere for a few days.”

After two days at Chloe’s, Julie finally felt well enough to go home, she’d woken up that morning feeling much more like her old self. When Sam brought her breakfast, she was already up and dressed. “What are you doing out of bed?” he asked, setting the tray on the dresser.

“I feel much better today. My arm still hurts but it’s much better. I just couldn’t stay in bed any longer,” she said, looking out the window. “I feel like I’ve missed more than two days.”

“Well, you haven’t. Not much has happened while you were sleeping. The moose is doing fine, Chloe says you did a great job of patching her up, we’ll be able to release her in a few days,” Sam said, handing her a plate of food.

While she ate he caught her up on everything she’d missed. When he’d finished, she looked at him and said, “I want to go home.”

Sam beamed at her. “Good, so do I. I’m tired of sleeping without you.”

Julie blushed, then laughed. “Me too.” Sam’s smile stirring her desire for the first time in days.

By late afternoon they were pulling up in front of the cabins, Chloe had resisted their planned move but finally gave in, sending more food with them than they could ever eat in a week. When they were ready to go, Sam insisted on carrying her out of the house, a ridiculous precaution, but Julie finally gave in. When they stepped onto the porch Julie was surprised to see not the four-wheeler but a horse and buggy.

“Sam, what is that?” Julie asked, looking from him to the buggy.

“It’s our ride. I thought it might be more comfortable than a four-wheeler,” he said, with a big grin.

Julie laughed. “As long as I don’t have to ride the horse, I’m happy. Thank you, Sam,” she said, and gave him a quick kiss.

He also insisted on carrying her into the cabin when they got home, again Julie let him, unable to resist the feeling of being in his arms. Since she’d been attacked by the wolf, Sam had barely touched her, afraid that he would hurt her, and Julie had plans to see that it came to an end. She wanted Sam so much it was almost painful, she craved the closeness they shared, the feeling of his bare skin against hers.

Just thinking about it made her shiver, and the desire begin to build. Sam misinterpreting her shiver asked, “Are you cold?”

Julie gave him a sultry smile. “No, I was just thinking about you.”

Sam understood perfectly what she meant, but didn’t take the bait. “Um, well, how about if I get you settled and then I’ll unload the buggy. Someone’s supposed to come get it and leave the four-wheeler in just a little while.”

“That’s fine,” Julie said, disappointed. “You can put me down on the couch.”

Sam got her settled, then kissed her on the forehead and began unloading the buggy. Once all the
food was put away, he seemed restless, not sure what to do but then they heard a four-wheeler out in the yard and he was gone. Julie sat on the couch feeling rejected, but she stopped herself, Sam was just nervous about hurting her, she’d have to take the lead, show him that she wasn’t that fragile.

When he came in he immediately went to the kitchen. “What do you want for dinner?” he asked, poking his head into the refrigerator.

“I don’t think I want any dinner. I think I’d just like to go to bed,” Julie said, faking a huge yawn. “I guess I’m more tired than I thought I was.”

“Oh, well okay,” Sam said, shutting the refrigerator door. “Do you want me to help you to bed?”

Julie expected more, a reference to sex at least, but Sam looked serious so she simply nodded her head and held her arms out, knowing he’d carry her if she asked. Sure enough, he gathered her gently in his arms and picked her up, warmth spread though her body at his gentle touch. “Thank you for taking such good care of me,” she said, kissing him on the neck.

“I like taking care of you,” Sam said, realizing just then that he did like taking care of her, something he’d never felt before. He’d never felt the kind of tenderness he did for Julie, and it warmed him to realize that she alone had unlocked this part of him.

When they got to the bedroom, Julie let Sam undress her, but when he picked up the tee-shirt she usually slept in, she took it out of his hands and threw it on the floor. With her good hand, she reached up and pulled his head down and kissed him, then said, “I want you, Sam, it’s been too long.”

Sam looked down at Julie, his body responding to her words, but his mind concerned with her safety. “Julie, I’m afraid I’ll hurt you,” he finally managed to say.

“Don’t worry, we’ll be careful,” she said, her hand sliding down his chest to the button of his pants.

“Julie…” He tried to protest, but her hand slipped inside his pants and closed around his erection and all resistance vanished.

Julie sank carefully to her knees, then in a bold move took him into her mouth, pleased when Sam began to moan. Each time she slid her mouth over him, he got harder making Julie moan with pleasure as well. Sam threaded his fingers into her hair, the pleasure of Julie’s mouth driving him closer and closer to orgasm. When Julie paused and looked up at him, he knew that if he didn’t stop her right then it would all be over.

He gently pulled her to her feet and brought his mouth down on hers, his tongue sweeping into her mouth to tease and taste. “I want to touch you, Julie,” he whispered.

She let him lead her over to the bed and laid back on the pillows, smiling when Sam stripped off his clothes and stood naked at the foot of the bed assessing the situation. He walked around the bed and put her injured arm up on a pillow, a look of concern briefly crossing his face before he joined her on the bed.

Stretching out beside her, he said, “I don’t want to hurt you.”

“Oh, Sam, if you don’t touch me it will hurt,” she said, grabbing his hand and placing it on her stomach.

Sam groaned when he felt her warm skin under his hand, found her mouth with his, and began to drive her crazy with his gentle caresses. Soon she was writhing on the bed, so desperate for his touch her injured arm was forgotten, her only thought of the burning need between her legs. Sam began to trail kisses down her neck, dropping lower until he found one of her taut nipples and sucked it into his mouth.

Julie whimpered as waves of pleasure coursed through her body, but Sam soon left her nipple and continued down. He kissed her stomach, making her giggle, then the point of her hip, making her suck in a breath, then down her leg until he got to her feet. When he sucked one of her toes into his mouth, a wave of intense pleasure raced through her straight to her core, making her suck in shocked breath at the feel of his warm mouth on her toes.

Sam chuckled, then sucked on each one of her toes until the burning became a full-fledged fire. He gently spread her legs and began kissing his way up her leg, shifting to the other leg when he got to the top, making Julie even more desperate for satisfaction. He kissed his way down her leg and sucked on the toes of the other foot, then back up, this time stopping when he was just inches from her glistening clit.

When his tongue finally grazed her hard nib, Julie was lost, trapped in a storm of sensation so incredible that the rest of the world ceased to exist. In only seconds, she was soaring on waves of pleasure as her orgasm rushed through her, leaving her spent and panting on the bed. Reaching down for Sam she pulled him up her body, desperate to feel his weight on her.

Sam desperate to drive himself into Julie, spread her legs even farther, but her knee bumped her hand and she winced in pain. “I knew I would hurt you,” Sam said, backing off.

Julie reached up and pulled him down on top of her, “Shush, we just have to try something different.” Then she pushed him over onto his back and climbed on top of him, keeping her bad arm cradled against her body.

Sam grabbed her hips and slid inside her waiting heat, groaning as her muscles clenched around his throbbing cock, then raised his hips and drove himself even deeper. Julie let Sam guide their movements, his hands rock solid on her hips, he raised and lowered her over and over, driving himself deep inside her each time. As they soared together, their eyes met and Julie felt the warmth not only of the pleasure, but of Sam’s love, it was there so clear in his eyes.

Sam let go of Julie’s hips, but she used her legs to continue the rhythm, finding that it felt all that more wonderful that way. Sam growled with pleasure at her movements, then reached between them and began rubbing her clit with his thumb, almost immediately the pressure inside Julie began to build. She continued to ride him, her thrusts met by his while his thumb circled, a flood of sensation that finally overcame Julie. Swept over the precipice, she cried out as the pleasure paralyzed her, her body gripping Sam’s so tightly that he lost his control and tumbled with her.

Afterward, Sam nestled Julie in his arms, her back wedged up against her chest and her bad arm resting on a pillow again. Her arm was throbbing a little bit more than it had been, but her body felt so wonderful it was easy to block the pain out. But eventually, it became enough that she couldn’t hide it from Sam.

“Your arm hurts, doesn’t it?” he said, accusingly.

  “Just a little,” she admitted.

“We shouldn’t have done that.” Sam’s voice was full of self-reproach.

“No, we had to,” Julie said, then looked up at him. “I needed to know that everything was still okay.”

When Sam looked at her confused, Julie tried to explain. “When that wolf charged at me all I could think about was how much I was going to miss you, how much we still had to experience together, how it would all be gone,” she said, the tears streaming down her cheeks.

Sam dried her tears with the pad of his thumbs. “I was so scared when I saw the wolf charge you, but you never even hesitated. You were incredibly brave, Julie,” Sam said, then added, “And I’m so glad because I don’t know what I would do without you, I can’t imagine my life without you in it.”

“Oh, Sam, I feel the same way,” Julie said, she wanted to tell him that she loved him, but couldn’t quite get the words out of her mouth, too afraid of his reaction to take the risk.

Sam kissed her, then gently untangled himself and got out of bed. When he came back he had a glass of water and a pain pill. “I want you to take this and get some sleep,” he said, handing them to her.

“Only if you promise to stay with me,” she said, taking the pill.

“Always,” he said, climbing back into bed with her.

It wasn’t long before the pain pill began to take affect and Julie’s mind began to float, her body to relax, and the pain to recede. Cradled in Sam’s arms, she hovered in a state between sleep and consciousness, content to be right where she was. Eventually, she woke long after dark to discover that Sam was gone and that she was starving.

Right on cue, Sam came through the
door with a tray full of food in his hand. “I thought we’d eat in bed tonight. A little picnic.”

Julie sat up in bed, wincing just a little, then smiled. “That sounds wonderful, I’m starving.”

“I thought you might be,” Sam said, laughing. ”We burned quite a few calories earlier.”

Julie blushed, then laughed too. “I guess we did.”

After they’d eaten, Sam made Julie take another pain pill. “Tomorrow you can try to go without them, but humor me and take this one tonight, you’ll sleep better,” Sam cajoled.

Julie couldn’t resist him, so she took the pill and curled up in bed again. By the time Sam had cleaned up the kitchen, she was sleepy, her body floating on a warm wave of wellbeing thanks to the drugs in her system. When Sam got into bed and pulled her into his arms, she snuggled down against his warm skin, feeling even more content.

Her mind wandered to Jake, Owen, and Flynn and she realized that she’d never thanked them for coming to their rescue. She opened her mouth to tell Sam she needed to, but then her mind wandered to the strange relationship Sam seemed to have with the three men, all the times he’d avoided them, but then when he was with them or spoke about them it was with obvious respect. Most importantly, when they’d needed help, he’d called them first.

Without even thinking she asked, “Sam, why did you call Jake when we were in trouble? There were a lot of other people you could have called.” Once the words were out of her mouth she was sorry, the last thing she’d meant to do was ruin the night by bringing up something he’d already told her he didn’t want to talk about, but the damage was done.

“I knew that they’d drop everything and come,” Sam said, feeling uncomfortable that he still hadn’t talked to her about his brothers.

It hadn’t been a conscious choice to call his brothers that night, he’d done it without even thinking, which he knew meant something important. He’d been going over and over his choice in all the quiet hours he’d been spending with Julie, as she slept he’d considered all the outcomes, but the one thing he’d never done was consider his feelings. Julie had just opened the door to that examination, but he wasn’t sure he was ready.
