DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Feel free to use these either in a book club or for personal journaling and reflection.
Story Questions – Good for ice breakers.
1. What is your most notable Christmas memory?
2. What is your worst holiday memory?
3. Think about how Kennedy and Reuben snuck behind the stage of the ballet. What is the most spontaneous (or mischievous) thing you have done with a friend?
4. Who is the craziest driver you know?
5. Have you ever been in a car accident? What happened?
6. Who was your most eccentric teacher or professor?
7. Are you a book lover like Kennedy? Pick a book you like. Tell why you like it and what that might tell others about your personality.
Issues Questions – For those who want to go deeper.
1. If you were Kennedy’s pastor or parent and saw her struggles after her kidnapping, how would you counsel her?
2. Do you believe the church in general is a safe place for Christians to admit to mental health issues (depression, PTSD, anxiety, etc.)?
3. Why are some Christians, like Kennedy, reluctant to admit to issues like these?
4. How do you feel about Christians seeking medicine or secular therapy for a psychological issue like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
5. Do you agree with Kennedy’s assumption that if she just prays more and reads her Bible more that God will heal her from her memories of the past?
6. If God could erase a painful memory from your life, would you ask him to do it?
7. Have you ever experienced God’s healing, either physically or psychologically? Is there an area of your life in which you are still waiting for deeper healing?
8. Why do you think God allows some Christians to continue to struggle indefinitely with issues like depression or trauma, while others experience instantaneous healing or don’t suffer from it at all?
