“I’m doing really well. I slept in a little this morning and recorded a few shows so they’ll play during my maternity leave from the podcast.”

“That’s a good idea. That way you can concentrate on just me and the baby.” He burst out laughing when he heard her sigh on the other end.

“I do not understand why you think my maternity leave means I will be catering to you, too.” She chuckled. “You have a mother. This is about our child.”

“Well, shit.” He rubbed on his jaw. “You’ll be stuck at home and the baby will have to eventually go to sleep, right? I heard newborns sleep a lot. That’s when it’s Daddy time!”

“No!” She laughed. “That’s not how this works. That’s the time for me to take a damn nap. And remember, no sex for six weeks anyway, Max.”

  He rolled his eyes.

“Yeah… we’ll see about that. Three weeks is probably long enough. I’m not waiting that long to get some pussy. Blow jobs only go so far.”

  “Six weeks is standard.”

“Three is fine, just like I said.”

  “So you’re a doctor now?”

“Nope. But I park my dick inside one practically every night.” He was met with the dial tone and burst out laughing.

Soon, he drew serious and decided to get on with what he had to do. He called his mother.

  “Mom…”

“Hello, Max. Nice to hear from you. Back home soon?”

“Yeah… Look, Mom… I, uh, got some information today.” He braced himself. “I need to ask you a question.”

  “Yes?”

“Have you spoken to anyone in your family since the Miami situation went down?”

He was met with a brief silence.

  “No.”

“Dad had said you were very upset about how that all played out… That you were acting funny, havin’ problems sleeping. He said that went on for a long time. Here’s another question. You know that money you asked me for two months ago?”

  “Yes…”

“Was it to, let’s see, how can I word this, take care of some loose ends back home?”

  “…Yes.”

“Mmm hmm.” He shook his head in disbelief. He had no idea his mother had it in her… His father wasn’t a stranger to shooting a motherfucker square in the face, the nuts, anywhere, but his mom? No, she hadn’t directly done it, but she might as well have… “How do you feel now?”

“Vindicated.” She paused, then added, “They tried to kill my only child! THEY LIED TO ME!”

“Okay, okay, it’s all right, Mom. I just… needed to be certain. I’ll make sure no one can link this back to you… and don’t tell anyone about this, ever.” There are plenty of ways to ensure that certain things come up missing, including cell phone records, money transfers, etc. “So, I’m leaving Virginia. I’ll be home soon, okay? I’ll stop by.”

“Okay. I… I love you, Maximus.”

“I love you too, Mom. See you soon.”

A wave of pure happiness… and closure… carried through with her words. He ended the call and got to his feet. Grabbing his bag and briefcase, he exited the hotel room. This time for good. He walked slowly down the hallway and approached the elevators. As he waited, he pulled out his earbuds from his jacket pocket and placed them on. When the silver doors opened, he pushed the lobby button. He rode down to the sounds of ‘Roadhouse Blues’, performed by the Doors.

Generation after generation, my family was made of nothing but savages…

  My mother is a savage…

  My father is a savage…

My son will be a savage…

  It’s a family affair…

People love to hate us, but without us in this world, there’d be nobody around to take out the fucking trash…

  You’re welcome, Beautiful.

  Goodnight.
