It's a Baby, Andy Russell

When she was ready to leave, Tamika looked at Andy and Rachel and said, “This is the hardest part, saying good-bye to you.”

Andy bit his lower lip. He didn’t want to cry.

“You don’t have to say good-bye to us,” Rachel said. “We’ll see you in school.”

  “That’s right,” Andy said.

Then he remembered what his father had told the woman at the hospital. “And even if you’re not living here,” Andy added, “you’re still like a member of our family.”

It was difficult for Andy to see Tamika ride off, but she was going home.

When Andy came into the house he realized that in the past two days, so much had changed. Tamika had gone home. He had saved his pets from Aunt Janet when he really didn’t have to. And he had become an older brother.

Andy was glad he was growing up—he just didn’t want to grow up too fast. Being nine was just fine. Right then, Andy thought it was the very best age of all.
