In Act Three, Cavaradossi’s lament left few eyes dry in the house, while the dramatic and horrifying conclusion seemed to overwhelm the audience so that there were moments of silence before the first person leapt to their feet, clapping riotously and shouting “Bravo! Bravissimo!”

Luca and Julia took dozens of curtain calls. She was weighed down with bouquets of flowers before she was allowed to leave the stage and stagger to her dressing room.

“I think they liked us,” she whispered to Luca, who followed her in and stood behind her, massaging her shoulders, watching their reflections in the bulb-lined mirror.

He bent to kiss her neck.

“They could not resist you. Who can blame them?”

“Oh, it wasn’t me, Luca. It was us. All of us. But I think they might have guessed that our relationship is more than professional.”

She twisted her neck up to beam at him.

“You know, I heard some people cry out as if they were amazed when you jumped from the battlements.” Luca chuckled. “Everyone knows this story, but you made it new for them.”

“We did. So. What do we do now?”

Luca pulled her up out of her chair and whirled her into a close embrace, planting a triumphant kiss on her plum-coloured lips. “We celebrate!”

  “At the cast party?”

“For a while. Then…just us.” He began to speak in Italian, and Julia recognised the words as those she sang to him, speaking of how she longed to escape to their private hideaway and indulge their intense love amid the concealments of nature.

“Oh, you are so crazy,” she murmured into the part of his chest exposed by his open collar. “But we have no little house. No secret hideaway.”

“That’s what you think,” said Luca.

  “What do you mean?”

“Get that face paint off, get changed, come to the party. You will soon see.”

  * * * *

Her head fizzy from champagne and swollen from exaggerated praise, Julia allowed Luca to lead her out of the restaurant where the opera cast had assembled to celebrate their triumphant opening night.

“Where are we going?” she asked, giggling a little in excited anticipation.

“Come on,” he said, half-turning to face her as he walked, his arm extended outwards, as if offering her the city.

Past the Trevi Fountain, illuminated and full of coins, down the Spanish Steps, arriving at last at the Piazza Navone, the lovers took in many of Rome’s most beautiful sights but barely registered them. The one sight they were fixated on was that of each other.

Luca stopped in front of a tall, golden building and took a key from his pocket.

“You…have you moved apartments?” asked Julia, a little confounded. The champagne was still sparkling its way through her bloodstream.

“Not I.” Luca beamed. “We. This place can be ours. For as long as you like.”

“But it’s in the Piazza Navone! It must cost a fortune!”

“No, it will cost us nothing. It belongs to Gianfranco. He has let us take it, as a gesture of, what is it—”

  “Apology?”

  “Good wheel.”

  “Goodwill! Oh! Gosh!”

“So come on. Up the stairs! Now!”

No longer on a narrow rented mattress, but into a luxurious cream-cotton bed Julia fell, pulled by Luca, following his instigation to claw at clothes and devour lips.

No longer exhausted from performance, but invigorated by Luca's closeness and the scent of his skin, Julia rolled and tumbled with him all over the sheets until they were tangled and the lovers were naked.

He always feels so good, Julia thought, delirious with Luca’s warmth and strength, pressing herself as close as she could, feeling his hard cock nudge a path between her thighs. It’s as if we’re jigsaw pieces…we just fit.

Her arms stretched around his broad chest and shoulders, while he held her by the hips and let his shaft slide between her sex lips, bathing in the sweet juices it found there. Julia flattened her breasts against his pectoral muscles, the nipples both crushed and stiff. She rotated her upper body a little to stimulate them as they kissed on and on.

Suddenly she was on her back, gasping into Luca’s mouth, lifting her leg on to his shoulder to enhance his pathway into her core. Her upper thigh sandwiched between their heaving chests, she bit down on his lip, causing him to rear up in confused pain.

  “Shit, Julia, that hurt!”

  “Are we forgetting something?”

  “Oh, the condom, right?”

“I don’t want any surprises just yet.”

He grinned, reaching down for his jeans and rummaging through the pockets.

“Maybe one day, eh? Little surprises. With tiny little feet.”

Julia hugged her knees to her chest before spreading her legs back out around Luca. “Maybe,” she conceded with a smile.

Nothing surprising, though, about Luca’s firm, familiar cock plunging deep into her welcoming channel. He pleasured her with gentle, steadfast strokes, until she began to fall into that chasm of bliss he always took her to. She spread her thighs wider, held on to the back of his head and clung there, as if afraid she would be blown away by the gathering force of her climax.

“You are mine, Julia,” he whispered. She felt her muscles begin to tremble around him, preparing for release. “You will be mine always.”

She flew into him, all her nerve endings burning from his touch, calling out his name and repeating his word, “Always.”

“Yes, always,” she murmured, sailing through her senses in his arms.

  “Sempre,” he vowed. “Sempre.”
