Dream of Me

“Are you alright?” he asked as his warm hands gently smoothed over her bare shoulders.

Unable to find the right words, she gulped, “Fine. I’m fine.”

“I heard you cry out.” His eyes bore into hers, seeking the answer she was unwilling to give.

Shrugging her shoulders, she flashed him a soft smile. “Sorry, I had a nightmare,” she lied.

Sighing, Kieran gently pulled her into his embrace as his arms encircled her back, holding her close to him. “Was it about your people? Your world?” he asked with a gentle voice.

Laying her head against his strong chest, she prayed that their bond didn’t allow him to know when she was lying. “Yes.”

Resting his cheek against the top of her head, he nodded, “Don’t worry. I will not allow Zyaid to destroy your world. The Kelithians will pay for all that they’ve done. I swear to you.” Pulling away, his hands came up to gently frame her face. “Come back to bed. I will keep your nightmares away.”

Reaching up, she curled her hand around the back of his neck, pulling him closer as she went up on her toes, meeting his lips with her own in a gentle kiss. Pulling back, she smiled with a knowing look. “You know, Kieran, there are some things that you can’t protect me from, such as nightmares.”

“Then you do not know your sou’tali, my precious human. Nightmares will never touch you again, not as long as I am near you.”

  “Why?” she asked breathlessly.

“Because you shall dream of me and I shall always be there.”

Blinking away the tears of happiness that surfaced with his gentle words, Elena leaned into Kieran’s warm embrace once more. Holding his words close to her heart, she fought not to drown in the fear of what happened moments ago.

What had happened to her when she touched the veil? She’d died, but Kieran brought her back. What if something else came back with her? If the Garmorian’s thought the Kelithian and Viper’s people were dangerous because of their gifts, what would that mean for her? Gripping her arms around Kieran tighter, she squeezed her eyes closed. She had to keep Kieran from finding out. Her world was threatened by the Kelithians now. She couldn’t risk turning the Garmorians against her if they found out. Would Kieran look at her with disgust as he did to the Kelithians? Her heart ached with the thought.

Taking a calming breath, she remained silent of her fears as he led her back to their temporary bed.

She couldn’t lose Kieran, she wouldn’t lose him.
