Denial [Movie Tie-in]

by Deborah E. Lipstadt

“Deborah Lipstadt’s riveting and deeply moving memoir of her ordeal and triumph as a libel defendant in England is a joy to read. Lucidly written, Lipstadt’s memorable book powerfully captures the drama of a fiercely fought trial about issues of enduring import.”

  —Floyd Abrams

“This compelling human and edifying legal story exposes the subtle and less subtle mechanisms of prejudice and racism. A courageous fighter for the truth and a gifted storyteller, Lipstadt narrates a poignant autobiographical experience with modesty, judiciousness, and a wonderful simplicity. Deeply gratifying, History on Trial is about the victory of history, truth, and reality over the ruses of human deception and wishful thinking.”

—Shoshana Felman, Woodruff Professor of Comparative Literature and French, Emory University

  * When Errol Morris interviewed Roth for Mr. Death, the chemist had said that the HCN would “probably not . . . penetrate more than 10 microns. Human hair is 100 microns.” Though he qualified his observation with the word, “probably,” the HCN most likely penetrated far deeper than 10 microns. However, his argument about severely diluting the sample is valid. Richard Green, a physical chemist with a Ph.D. from Stanford University, noted another serious problem with Leuchter’s so-called methodology. He gave the lab samples of vastly different sizes. The HCN concentration was certainly not homogeneous. Therefore, by studying different-size samples, the results of any test become highly suspect. Richard J. Green, “Expert Report,” IvP&DL, Court of Appeal, 1996-I-No. 1113. See: http://www.holocaust-history.org.

  * Actually some of the excavation work had already begun. In the summer of 1998, a group of researchers from the Holocaust History Project, a group of historians, engineers, physicists, computer specialists, and chemists who demonstrate the fallacy of deniers’ arguments, had gone to Auschwitz. They found two of the holes at that time. Subsequent trips in 2000 revealed an additional hole. Daniel Keren, Jamie McCarthy, and Harry W.   * The fires were spreading and demolishing both Jewish- and Aryan-owned property. Therefore, the authorities ordered the arson halted.

  * The official German toll for the night of Kristallnacht itself is ninety-one.

  * Interpol, the international crime-fighting organization, was formed in 1923. Its headquarters were in Vienna. In 1938, after the Anschluss, the Germans took control of the organization and moved it to Berlin where they used it, in the main, as a vehicle for the persecution of Jews, Gypsies, and homosexuals. After World War II it was reconstituted as an international organization.

  * I am not sure why he was smiling or what he was scribbling, but in a subsequent posting on his website he claimed that because of Court of Appeal rules, he was “not allowed to introduce any new evidence whatsoever.” He then goes on to say “we might even have had difficulty introducing the new 1,000-page Rudolf affidavit.” Irving fails to inform his readers that the affidavit—which was not 1,000 pages—had been submitted to the court three months earlier and the court had accepted it. He does not mention that it was withdrawn by his barrister to the consternation of the lord justices.
