Crave (Tainted Angels Book 1)

A string of curses left him before he did the same, his cum filling my womb as my blood filled his mouth and he clung to me as we both rode out the bliss from our orgasms.
“One day you’re gonna kill me, Seraph,” Rax panted as he rolled over and took me with him. His lips found mine and his kiss inflated my heart. Pulling back, he ran his thumb over my mouth, wiping away the remnants of his blood. “My heart is so happy,” he whispered, his gaze both adoring and intense.
“I know.” I sighed contentedly as I snuggled deeper against him. “I can feel the vigorous beat of it.”
We both sighed when Herb’s whimper at the door signalled his heartbroken solitude. “I swear that bloody hound was dropped at birth. He’s a hellhound,” Rax grumbled as he got up to let my boy in. “You’re supposed to be tough, you pansy,” he told Herb as he bounded onto the bed and snuggled against me.
Rax stared at us, his eyes roaming over the bed as he tried to find space to join us. Of course, Herb was now the size of a small zebra. “We need a bigger bed.” He glared at Herb as he pulled a t-shirt over his head and pulled a blanket from the cupboard before settling himself into the chair in the corner.
“Aww,” I defended as I kissed Herb’s wet nose, “He just loves me.”
“So do I!” Rax replied. “And for once I would love to actually sleep with you.”
“Well at least he allowed us to do our business. Usually he trashes the house until he can get to me.”
“Don’t I know it,” he grumbled again. “It’s usually idiot here that has to clean after him since you can’t bend down.”
I smiled, rubbing my huge belly. Of course, my babies kicked back in reply to my touch. My pregnancy hadn’t been without its problems. I needed to have blood transfusions daily just to keep my children alive, the toxins in my blood a danger to them, but I’d eagerly allowed the nurse to slip that needle into my vein every damn day so that one day I could hold my babies in my arms.
“You think Jaron is doing the right thing?” I asked quietly, my mind unable to stop thinking about my friend.
Since I had been sworn in as The Almighty things had drastically changed. Luckily Miller had managed to prepare the humans for what was to come, the numbers of the dredgen increasing and virtually invading Earth had made it easier for him to explain things to the human government. And as well as Miller training and organising things on Earth, Jaron was in charge of the same thing in both the Gehenna and Empyrean realms.
One of the first rules I had changed was for the spiritual realms to be able to socialise. We needed the amalgamation to fight against the council and their army of dredgen.
Jaron had had a tipoff about the location of one of the council members but it meant him having to go deep into the pits of the infernal region. The infernal region was the underbelly of Gehenna. It was home to Abaddon, the ruler of all the evils, and the place was the most dangerous of all the realms.
“Jaron’s tough,” Rax reassured me. “He’ll be fine.”
I couldn’t help but worry but I also understood that the information had to be acted upon. To grant peace to all realms the council members needed to be brought down.
“You think we should send Dex with him?”
“No.” Rax sighed, making his way across the room to me. Taking my hand, he kissed each of my knuckles. “Seraph, I shouldn’t be telling you this, but Jaron is … he’s familiar with the region. He knows what he’s doing.”
“He used to live there?” My mouth was open with shock at his revelation.
He nodded. “A long time ago. He was set to be coupled with a female demon.” He frowned. “Things didn’t go to plan and Jaron left.” He brushed his fingers over my cheek. “So stop worrying, allow him to do his thing.”
“Okay.”
Herb let out a huge bark, making us both jump, before he belted off the bed and ran away whimpering. I rolled my eyes when I noticed the tiny moth flapping around the lamp.
Rax gave me a large grin and jumped on the bed beside me, his arms wrapping around me as he pulled my back into his chest.
“Bed!” He sighed happily. “At last I get to spend a night in my own bed!”
I froze. “Uhh, Rax.”
“Do you realise it’s been nigh on four months since I last slept in the comfort of my own bed?”
“Baby …”
“If anything disturbs me I swear I’m gonna hack someone’s legs off,” he mumbled as his nose nuzzled the side of my neck and his sigh of contentment made me grimace.
“That might be a problem then,” I whispered. “I value my legs.”
“I doubt you’re going to disturb me, Seraph, unless of course you start that weird snoring thing you do.” He paused. “Uhh, Willa. Have you pissed the bed?”
I gave him a moment. Then as I counted down from three to one in my head and got to number one, he shot out of bed like his arse was on fire. His eyes grew and grew as he gawped at me until I started to worry for their housings in their sockets. “Oh my God, are you … have your …”
I nodded and slowly lifted my legs out of bed.
“Oh fuck … uhh … shit … Seraph … uhh …”
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. “Delilah,” I whispered. “It’s time. Bring Dex with you, Rax is already freaking out.”
“On my way.”
No sooner had she answered me than a ripple in the air declared hers and my mother’s arrival. My mother directed Rax into the chair when he started to hyperventilate.
“I’ll just …” Rax whispered in a choked voice as he tried for the door.
Delilah shot out her hand and grabbed Rax. “You put them in there,” she told him, “so I’ll be damned if you think you aren’t going to help the little buggers out.”
He paled and if I wasn’t in the middle of a heaving contraction I’d have laughed my ass off at him. Yet when I squatted on the floor, the swiftness of my babies arrival making me scream out and start pushing, Rax’s eyes rolled into the back of his head and he flat out fainted.
Delilah glared at him. “Motherfucking girl!”
Blowing out a breath, she rubbed her hands together and turned back to me. “Okay, let’s get this show on the road.”
And between her and my mother, I delivered two perfect babies.
I had thought my life was complete when I had coupled with Rax, but when I lay in bed an hour later, my beautiful boy suckling on one breast and my gorgeous girl on the other, and Rax watching with tears in his eyes and loving words of encouragement and proudness, I knew that whatever the coming years brought, I could take it head on because now I had something to fight for.
My family brought me more strength and courage than I ever thought possible. They gave me more love than I was sure my heart could take. And they gave me so much happiness that the coming decades of devastation and heartbreak could never tip the scales in favour of the negatives.
As our world went to war, my family and friends showed me the meaning of loyalty and devotion, and nothing, not even death and heartache would ever take that away from me.
I no longer craved for things I couldn’t have. Because I had it all. And when my mate climbed onto the bed with me, our children, and Herb, and gave me the most loving kiss, the tears in my eyes, for the first time in a long while, were happy tears.
We’d lost a lot, but what we’d gained overshadowed all the heartache, and I knew we were strong enough to take whatever came at us head on.

Dove,
Happy 14th birthday, baby.
Listen, something’s come up. Jimmy’s got me and Bob a job – in fucking Russia no less. I know! How’s that for crazy!
Anyway, you’re 14 now, don’t want me and my fella cramping your style. You can fuck in peace, baby!
You’re ok with Ren aren’t you? She loves you more than she does me anyway.
Love you,
baby. Take care of yourself and give Ren a squeeze for me.
Mum
P.S Make sure you don’t answer the door! The fucking nosy cunt from the socials due today, and I’m supposed to be there … yeah, might be best if you don’t open the door to her, she’s been threatening to take Ren into care … fucking bitch!
Closing the folded piece of paper, I stared at the bright yellow flower Mum had drawn on the front, with the words, ’14 AT LAST’ scrawled across the top in thick red letters.
Russia!
She’d fucked off to Russia with Bob!
My legs wobbled and I flopped onto the threadbare two-seater bench, the corner of the foldaway table digging into my hip and making me hiss. The paper shook in my fingers as my hands trembled.
“What a fucking bitch!”
My mother had never actually been maternal, but fuck! FUCK!
Staring around the room, not seeing anything of the inside of the small one bedroomed caravan we lived in, only the bleak future now laid out in front of me, I swiped at the single tear that managed to squeeze free.
Russia!
“Jesus fucking Christ Mum!”
P.S Make sure you don’t answer the door! The fucking nosy cunt from the socials due today, and I’m supposed to be there … yeah, might be best if you don’t open the door to her, she’s been threatening to take Ren into care … fucking bitch!
Rereading the words, my heart started to shift into panic. Fuck!
Diving out of the bench, the corner once again burying into the small amount of flesh on my hip, I yanked open the van door and tore across the camp.
“Whoa Dove, fire up your pretty ass?” Trevor sneered when I ran past him. Creepy fucker! The fat bastard was always trying to get the kiddies into his van and I’d warned Ren until we were both blue in the face that if she ever spoke a single word to him I’d hack off her beautiful long blonde hair and make a wig for Miss Daisy, her dolly, with it. That had appeared to work – thank the fucking gods!
“Ren!” I shouted when I saw her thin little body balancing through the tyre hanging from the only tree in the field. “Ren, we have to leave!”
She shook her head firmly. “No, Dove. Bren has gone to fetch me one of his mum’s cookies. I can’t leave yet!” Her pretty blue eyes filled with tears, the promise of cookies too much to run from as she gripped firmly on to the rope.
“Ren!” I grumbled, trying to prise her fingers from around the rope. The tiny eight year old had more strength than I did! “Please, we have to leave.”
“Uh, uh,” she repeated with another shake of her head.
I was pulling at her now, desperate to make her let go. “Serenity Jane!” I was struggling to hold the tears back, the realisation of what was happening suddenly sinking in. “If we don’t go now the bloody woman is coming to take you away!”
Her eyes widened. “The woman with the big wart on her chin? The one Trixie told me to hide from?” Ren had never uttered the word ‘Mum’ in her whole life, insisting that ‘Trixie’ never acted like a mum so didn’t deserve to be called one.
“Yes!” I said quickly. “Please, honey. We have to leave. We can go anywhere you like, and we can buy shit tons of cookies when we get there.” I bit my lower lip, praying that the small amount of cash I’d hidden in the back of the dresser was still there. If the bitch had swiped it then I swore I would hunt her down and hack out her eyeballs with a rusty spoon.
Ren narrowed her eyes on me. “Anywhere?”
I nodded firmly, praying that she would just let go of the damn rope. “You know where I want to go, Dove.” She jumped off the tyre. Thank the lord. “Can we go? Can we?”
Her excitement had me pausing from my hurry and I smiled down at her, pinching her chin between my finger and thumb. “London it is.”
“Yay!” she cried, jumping up and down. Flinging her arms around me, she buried her face into my stomach. “I love you so much Dove.”
My heart slid up my throat. What the hell was I gonna do? How the hell was I going to support an eight year old in strange city with little cash and no damn digs? Closing my eyes, I swallowed back the bile and forced another smile when Ren looked up at me with her huge expectant eyes. “I love you too, Ren. So much, honey. No one will ever take you away from me, ever.”
She nodded with excitement. “We’re going on an adventure?”
“We sure are!”
As Ren was trying her best to fit her tatty bunny, Mr Big, into her backpack and I’d checked on the stash of cash I’d saved for over six years, the grand total of £304.56 now sat in the pocket of my bag, I sat on the end of the bed and glanced around the tiny square bedroom I had shared with Ren for eight years now. As much as it was a dive, it was my home, our home. And as much as my mother was a drunk and an addict, caring more for the next hit and a quick screw with Bob than spending time with her daughters, she was still my mum. She was my home, as much as the crappy little van was.
My eyes slid to the wall beside the grubby mirror, my gaze fixing on the photograph.
It was then that a choked sob broke from me. Quickly covering my mouth before Ren caught it, I stood up and pulled it free from the piece of chewing gum I’d stuck it to the wall with. Flick’s arm was around my waist, his fingers curled over my hip as we both laughed hysterically, tears streaming down our faces at a joke we’d shared.
“Listen, I’ll be back in ten minutes,” I told Ren as I stuffed the photo into my own backpack. “Do not answer the door to anyone but me. I’ll knock as usual.”
She nodded, still trying, and failing, to get Mr Big to fit in beside her colouring book and pencils, Miss Daisy, and thankfully, her toothbrush. “Say bye to him for me.”
She looked at me with the knowing gaze of an adult, her pain for me as strong as my own. Unable to reply, I clenched my jaw and nodded.
“Hey Dove,” Flick greeted with his usual huge smile as he wiped his oily hands on the rag that hung from the waistband of his jeans and gave me his full attention, the bore of his eyes piercing my soul, like it did every time he looked at me. He was fixing up a Harley, had been doing for the last eight months, and as I stood and stared at it, it occurred to me that I would never see it finished. I would never get to ride on it, my arms around the waist of the man I loved as we broke the rules and tore over the open roads. Now some other girl would get that privilege. And fuck, did that hurt more than anything. “Baby?” Flick said softly when he saw the devastation wash over me.
I’d been in love with Flick since I was six. Since he had beaten up Drew Peters when he’d pulled my hair and kicked my shin. But I could never tell him. He was nineteen. What would he want with me when he could have any girl willing to … give herself in that way? I was fourteen, plain and boring. I was tall and lanky, had no breasts and my long brown hair was wild with a mass of unruly curls, not sleek and dyed the latest colour like the girls I saw Flick out with. To him, I was just a friend, a girl that travelled with his kinfolk from place to place, taking over every empty field with our shitty rundown caravans. And strangely, as much as I was in love with him and dreamed of a future with him, I wanted him to get out of this shit. I wanted him to make something of his life, find a girl who was devoted to him. Find a woman to marry, and to live in a big house with lots of children around him. I wanted happiness for him. Even if I had to forfeit my own for him to have his.
And I could never give him those things. A family. Happiness. Not anymore. For more reasons than one.
He pulled me into his strong arms when I couldn’t hold back the sobs any longer. Using him, I clung to him, engraining his amazing scent and the feel of him to my memory as his fingers softly rubbed up and down my back. “Dove, what’s wrong?”
Pulling back, I looked up at him, then lowered myself on to his van steps. “She’s gone.”
He froze, his gaze probing. Knowing what I was saying, he hissed out a curse and ran his fingers through his thick black hair, then, causing me to jump up, he spun around and kicked out
at the Harley with his boot.
“Flick!” I cried. “Don’t do that.”
I bent before the bike and scooped up the part he’d knocked off with his furious strength. “Leave it,” he said quietly but I scurried around, picking up the screws he’d knocked loose. He’d need them, he couldn’t afford new ones. “Leave it!” he shouted.
I flinched, stilling. Remaining on the floor, refusing to look at him, I whispered. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Grabbing my shoulders, he pulled me up and held me to his chest. “Don’t you be sorry for what that bitch does! Don’t you ever, Dove!”
I nodded against him, hating that I was wetting his favourite t-shirt with my stupid tears.
“Where will you go?”
I grabbed on to him tighter. “I’m so scared, Flick.”
“I’ll come with you,” he said suddenly.
Rearing back I stared up at him in shock. “You can’t do that!”
“Of course I can. I can look after you and Ren. I’ll get a job, we’ll find a nice little house somewhere …”
“But why?” I choked out, “W-why would you do that?”
He squinted at me as though I’d asked the stupidest of questions. “You know why, Dove.” His voice was gruff as his fingers trailed across my cheek. His brilliant green eyes secured mine. “I love you. I’ve always loved you.”
I stumbled backwards, my head shaking in denial. “You … you can’t!”
As much as his words ignited a fire inside me, my heart swelling to bursting point, they also broke every part of my soul. So long I had wanted to hear those words leave his amazing lips, and yet now, now it was too late. Too fucking late.
He smiled, a gentle, tender smile that ripped every piece of me apart. He took the one step needed to get close to me. My body was trembling, my skin breaking out in goosebumps as he slowly brought his lips to mine. One of his hands spread across the nape of my neck, holding me and refusing my escape as the other sought for my hand, his fingers threading through my own when he found it. The world seemed to shift beneath my feet. My soul was floating somewhere above me as Flick kissed me with an adoration that took my breath away. I was too in love with him to move away. To deny myself this one last thing.
