Alicia grinned and looked up at him.
‘All right. In that case I accept.’
‘Is that a commitment?’
‘Yes.’
‘Me too.’
‘You’re going to have to explain this to me one day,’ she said. ‘Hilario’s contradictions get the better of me sometimes.’
‘I will, one day. When I understand them myself.’
They stared out towards the deep shining blue of the Mediterranean, feeling each other’s warmth, breathing the same air.
‘How are you feeling today?’ Cámara asked at length.
‘It doesn’t hurt so much,’ she said. ‘I went for a walk this morning.’
‘That’s very good news,’ he said. ‘Because I brought this.’
‘More surprises? I’m not sure I can take any more.’
From a bag at his side he pulled out her helmet.
‘I thought we might go for a ride,’ he said. ‘Nice and slow.’
They stood up and she rested her weight on his arm.
‘I’d like that,’ she said. ‘Let’s get lost. Just you and me.’
