  He scuffed his shoe back and forth against the floor. “I heard you and Charlie talking about the dance.”

  “Yeah, he’s going to ask Willa.”

  Marcus’s eyes snapped up to mine. “Oh! Good!” He let out a small, relieved breath, and I realized he’d been worried that Charlie had been asking me.

  “Would you like to go?” I asked.

  His mouth dropped open. “What?”

  “Do you want to go to the dance together?”

  His dreamy hazel eyes lit up. “Um, yeah. I mean, yes. I mean . . . I was going to ask you with this thing I made, but then the whole zombie thing happened.”

  I smirked. “Zombie apocalypses do tend to put a damper on things.”

  Marcus aimed a thumb at a poster on the wall advertising the dance. “Should we go in costume or regular clothes?”

  “Like what? A zombie? An alien? A monster?” I jokingly suggested. “I’ve seen enough of those for a lifetime. My vote’s for regular clothes.”

  “Me, too,” he said with a smile. “I like you just the way you are.”
