“I guess…but he took no for an answer, pretty well. He knew there was someone else I wanted to be with when all of this court mess is over.”

  “Hmm…”

I raised an eyebrow. “What? You don’t believe me?”

“It’s not that. I’d have to say it’s more that I don’t understand you.”

“Why? What’s to understand?” I felt myself bristle a little bit. I hope Mick wasn’t going to blow this by being one of these guys who was so possessive that he suffocated me.

“He’s hot, he’s super talented, he’s rich…. why don’t you want to date him? I mean really, you couldn’t do better…”

I laughed. “Do you want me to date him?”

  “Hell no!”

“Do you not believe me when I say I don’t want to date him?”

  “No.”

“Do you want to date him?”

  “Yeah…kind of.”

The district attorney didn’t want to pursue any charges against Skye or her aunt. It seemed that he just wanted to be finished with it once and for all. Skye was deliriously happy to be really and truly free at last. She didn’t mind that they didn’t charge her aunt…she figured Hannah would have to suffer in her own mind for what she did…or failed to do for the rest of her life.

Skye introduced me to her grandfather. He was not impressed. I’d have to turn up the charm a little next time I saw him. I intended to be around for a long time, so I wanted to get into his good graces. Now that I know she knows Kyle Case…I really must be good.

Lance’s fight went great on Friday afternoon, and by Friday evening I was doing sound check in Caesar’s Palace. It was hard to believe how fast your life could change. One second mine was a fucked-up mess. All I ever had were temporary friends. I didn’t have a real job. I didn’t have any money and I spent every day of my life chasing my next anonymous fuck. I finally realized that was a pretty screwed up way to live your life.

I’m not much better off in the money department…yet…but as the lights dimmed and the crowd erupted into wild cheers, I realized that money or not…I had arrived at my destination. I was content with my life for the first time…. maybe ever. I’m in love with a beautiful woman…although I hadn’t shared that with her just yet. I’m going to give her some time to adjust to her whole new life before I tell her, but, I plan on marrying her someday. I’m sure she’ll want me…who wouldn’t?

I have a tight circle of friends now, thanks to meeting Brock and Lance in the bar that day. Jacob turned out to be a pretty good guy and someday I’ll grow on Cassie…I think. The little pink…baby might even grow on me with time, who knows? I heard Bobby’s bass guitar strike its first chord and I closed my eyes and felt the music. I was on stage in one of the biggest venues in Vegas, opening for Kyle…Fucking…Case. My life was complete.

  Chapter One

Stone Mother finished their last set and left the stage…finally. It was almost eleven and it was going to take us an hour on the subway to get back to Brooklyn from midtown. The rest of the audience wasn’t happy that they were finished. They were screaming for an encore…my sister Lynn was on her feet next to me and screaming louder than any of them. Our seats were crap…back in row “Q” where we had watched most of the show from the large television monitors placed strategically around the giant arena. I would have rather watched it from home, or just been home, not watching it.

The only reason I’d agreed to this tonight was because it was Lynn’s birthday and she had begged me. She’s a pain in my ass…but she’s my little sister, so what am I going to do? She’d called me earlier in the afternoon and she had used extreme guilt to talk me into this.

“Hey!” she had said when I picked up the phone. That was my first mistake, I usually screen her calls, but it was her birthday.

“Hey! Happy Birthday. Did you get my text?”

I heard her sigh. “Yes, I got your text. What’s wrong with a good old fashioned phone call, or showing up at Mom’s for cake?”

“I’m sorry honey, I was working.” I could almost hear her rolling her eyes.

“It’s too late for ‘I’m sorry,’” she said. “My feelings are extremely hurt and you’ll have to do something for me now to make up for it.”

It was my turn to roll my eyes. She was always so dramatic. “What do you need?” I asked her.

  “You remember Roger?”

I did remember Roger…mostly because I hated him. My sister is five seven, a hundred and twenty pounds, with curly brown hair that falls to her tiny little waist and big brown doe eyes. She’s gorgeous, like a model gorgeous…for some reason she’s unaware that she could have any man she set her mind to having. Instead, she waits and lets them pick her…and the losers are attracted to her like flies on shit. Our older brother Tommy had conniptions over it.

  “Yes, I remember him.”

  “Well, we broke up.”

  “Yay!”

“Shut up! My heart is broken.”

“You’re better off alone than with a loser like that.”

“I guess,” she said. “But, now I have two tickets for Stone Mother tonight and no date.”

“Since I have no idea who that is, please tell me that you’re not asking me to go. What about all of your friends?”

“It’s a Tuesday night and everyone already had plans, and how the hell can you not know who Stone Mother is? They’re only the most popular rock band in history!”

In history? Jeez, she’s a drama queen. I tried to turn the guilt tables on her by saying, “So I was the last choice?”

“Only because I knew you would balk at going. Come on Rose…please! It’s my birthday!”

  “I have a deadline.”

“Bull! I just talked to you yesterday when you were sending the manuscript to the editor so don’t give me that baloney! If you don’t want to go, just say so, don’t lie.”

“Okay, I don’t want to go.”

  “Oh Rosie…please! Kyle Case…in person…up close….”

“I have no idea who Kyle Case is.”

“Are you kidding? Seriously, you use the internet all day long. How could you not know who he is?”

  “I don’t know honey, but I don’t.”

“Let me tell you who he is. He is the lead singer and founder of Stone Mother. He is a Native American God. He’s sex appeal personified. The hottest thing to happen to music since…ever! And, do you want to know what the absolute best part is?”

  “No, not really.”

She told me anyways, “They’re giving away two back stage passes tonight. VIP passes. I have a good feeling since it’s my birthday that I’ll win them. They draw one set of tickets at the end of the night, we’re in. I can feel it.”

I laughed. “Where is the concert?”

  “At the Garden.”

“You do know that out of 18,000 or so people, at least one other person is bound to have a birthday today.”

“Such a negative Nellie. So, should I meet you at your place?”

  “What time does it start?”

  “Seven.”

“No way am I going to be ready in time to get all the way out to midtown by seven,” I told her.

“Oh give me a break Rose! You’re just coming up with excuses.” She was right, I was…I didn’t want to go. “It’s my birthday!” She whined it that time. The guilt kicked in and I said,

“Fine, I’ll go. What are you wearing?”

Now here I am…hours later as my little sister ruins her voice screaming for one more song and I look at the face of my phone, see the time, and think about all the work I could have gotten done tonight. I’m a freelance writer and I seldom miss the rare opportunity to have the apartment to myself. It wasn’t that I minded music…I had enjoyed the concert, sort of. The warm up band was almost as good as this main attraction everyone is so crazy about in my opinion. I don’t remember that bands name, but the lead
singer was about six-foot five or six…even from our crappy seats, I could see that he’s huge. I could also see that he’s hot. He had tattoos all over his big muscles and long hair and he wore a pair of faded, torn jeans and a white muscle t-shirt. I got a chill down my spine just looking at him before he even opened his mouth. When he did, this sexy, raspy voice came out…Shit! It has been way too long since I had sex. I’m creaming my panties over a guy in a second-rate band that’s not even good enough to headline.

The relentless stomping of the fans on the stadium floor and in the stands coupled with their screams caused Stone Mother to come back out for one encore song. The four extremely good-looking guys stood at the edge of the stage. From where we sat they looked like tiny little tatted up action figures. I could see them more clearly on the monitor, but I honestly just wanted them to call it a night, so I could.

“You want more of me New York?!” Kyle Case asked. The crowd erupted again and my little sister was again right with them. This Kyle Case that caused Lynn to need a change of panties was good-looking in a dangerous sort of way. I really couldn’t see what the fuss was all about though. He could have been any good-looking guy off the street…at least from where I sat. He looked just like the type Lynn would pick, or in Lynn’s case, the kind that would pick her. They were all good looking…but defective somehow. In this guy’s case I could practically smell the arrogance from where I sat up in the rafters. “You want more of ME?” What about the other three members of the band? I had to wonder what they thought of his extreme narcissism.

“Okay New York, just one more because I love each and every one of you…here goes,” That prompted another eye roll from me. I wondered how many of these celebrity-crazed women thought he really meant that. I bet he said that to all the cities.

Once again, the band began pounding out another wild rock song and the audience stayed on their feet and danced and clapped and incessantly screamed out marriage proposals…or something less decent. It was obviously a song they all knew too because people were singing along and towards the end of the song, Kyle Case would hold the microphone out and then the audience would take over singing the chorus. I think I was the only one not on my feet and no matter how hard Lynn tugged on me, I refused to stand up.

When the song finally ended, Kyle Case flashed his dimples to the audience again…and then with nothing but his guitar and no back up from the other guys who disappeared off stage, he began to croon out a love song. For the first time all night I was riveted to the stage. I had judged too quickly…Lynn was right…this guy was the best singer since…ever. When he finished that one, he said good-night to the screaming fans again. As much as I had enjoyed that last song…I’d gotten goose bumps…all I wanted to do still was to be at home in my sweatpants and in front of my computer. I’d been looking for inspiration all day for a new story I was working on. The one good thing that came of being drug down here tonight was that I think I found it. I might just do a rock-star gone bad story.

“Excuse me, Miss?” I looked up into the eyes of a huge bald guy with a black shirt that said, “Staff” across the front. The climb up must have been a bit much for him. He was huffing and puffing and there was a light sheen of sweat across his brow.

“Yes?” It was still loud and we were both yelling.

  “Can I see your ticket?”

  “Really? The show’s over.”

“Please,” he huffed out. I rolled my eyes, dug in my pocket and handed it to him. He used his little pen light to look at it and said, “Thank you,” as he handed it back. Then he asked, “Is she in this seat?” He pointed at Lynn.

“Yes.” I tugged on the back of her shirt. She turned around, took one look at the guy and pulled her ticket out of the back pocket of her jeans. She handed it to him, looking positively giddy. He looked at it with his light and said something to her I didn’t catch. Lynn jumped up and down clapping her hands together like a seven-year-old. She grabbed my hand and yelled,

“Come on!” I followed her…anything to get closer to the exit. She was following the big guy. When we reached the main level, we were led to a kiosk that said,

“The Jim and Ted show.” These two clowns I’d heard of. They do a morning radio show and couldn’t be more vulgar and annoying if they tried. My sister looked like she was about to burst. I couldn’t imagine why she was so happy to see these guys. One of them was literally tattooed from the underside of his jaw down to his feet and the other guy weighed about four hundred pounds and breathed like an English bulldog. They definitely had faces for radio.

“What’s your name pretty girl?” Tattoo guy…I think he’s Jim, was talking to Lynn. She was so excited she couldn’t stand still.

  “Lynn Cardinale.”

“Well Lynn Cardinale it’s so nice to meet you. I’m Jim Bob and this is my brother and partner in Crime Ted Bob and…” he laughed, “This girl can’t stop hopping. She knows why she’s here!” He turned to me then and said, “Well hello beautiful, what’s your name?” I gave him a dirty look. My sister laughed nervously and said,

“Rose, her name is Rose Cardinale. She’s my sister.”

“Well maybe Rose isn’t aware of why you two beautiful sisters are here and that’s why she looks so grumpy. Ted, would you like to do the honors?”

Four-hundred-pound guy put his microphone to his lips. All that could be heard for the first few seconds was his wheezing. The concert goers were filing out of the seating area and gathering around us. I absolutely hate being the center of attention, especially in a group setting and Lynn knows it. She was in for an ass-kicking when we got home. “Miss Lynn Cardinale and Miss Rose Cardinale, you have each won a VIP pass for the after party with the Bar Boys and most importantly Stone Mother! How do you feel about that?” Lynn was screaming and jumping up and down, clapping her hands. I was in shock. Surely she didn’t expect me to go. I didn’t do crowds and I didn’t do parties. “I think Miss Rose is in shock,” Giant Ted said with a laugh.

“She’s about to go further into shock right now then.” Jim said over the microphone and to his partner as if I wasn’t standing right there. I could feel the electricity of the crowd before I heard the change in the noise level. Chaos erupted around me and I looked up in time to see four large men with “Staff” t-shirts coming towards us. When they reached us and the cover of the canopy they parted. In the center of their big bodies was the guy from Stone Mother…Kyle Case. I hate to admit that Jim and Ted were right about anything…but now I was in shock. The monitors hadn’t even come close to doing this guy justice. He was the most beautiful person I’d ever laid eyes on.

I sat behind the bar and watched the show. As soon as Steve danced out to the center of the stage, he picked one girl out of the audience and graced her with a sexy, smoldering look. Steve has brown eyes…but for his show in my club he wears a pair of the most startling blue contacts I’ve ever seen. I watched him edge up to the side of the stage while not missing a single beat of the music, until he was next to where the girl sat surrounded by her friends. Without ever taking those blue eyes off of hers, he began to flex his incredibly taut muscles and gyrate and shake his sexy hips, all in time with the beat. The young woman looked like she was about to faint, as her friends filled his belt up with cash. I watched her fan herself with a fifty-dollar bill as he stepped up on top of her table, and I watched her hand gently graze the inside of his thigh as she tucked the money into his belt. He blew her a kiss and she blushed, then for dramatic effect, he ran his hand right across the bulge in the front of his red, white, and blue G-string.

I watched my highest-earning dancer with a smile, and I wondered, as I had before, if the ladies would still feel the same about him if they knew he was gay. Steve came to me from a gay revue show on the strip. He’d tired of having to dress in brightly colored feminine outfits. He wanted to be a firef
ighter or a policeman. As much as Steve loves to suck a cock, he also revels in his own masculinity. It’s men like him who make this place for me…and ones like the newest star of my show, who would be up next.

As the song Steve danced to neared its end, five of my other guys came out, and they all six walked right up to the edge of the stage. I knew what was coming from watching them rehearse, but I was curious to see if it had its full effect when the house lights were down and the place was packed. The women screamed “Take it all off” as their big hands went to their waists. The noise level was almost deafening right before the blinding flash of white light on the stage. Everyone fell silent as it went from that to pitch black, then the lights came back on and the guys were hanging out in all their glory. The crowd went wild, and the women who surrounded the stage were reaching up in the hopes of grabbing a handful of meat. I swear, sometimes I think going deaf might be a hazard of my job. The women were screaming like they’d never seen a cock in the flesh. Of course, these were six very nice ones. I have a knack for choosing the best.

The lights were extinguished again, and I knew the guys were moving backstage. I ran a classy joint. It was the only really classy one in Vegas with full-frontal nudity, even if it was just a flash. I had a strict “no touching” policy. I knew a lot of the guys went back to hotel rooms and apartments with many of these women, but what they did on their own time wouldn’t get me shut down. I didn’t even sample my own merchandise…anymore. I thought about Nick and absently ran my tongue across my lips. If he wasn’t gay…I might have broken that rule.

The bright flash happened again, only this time it was a burst of gold. When the audience’s eyes adjusted to the stage lighting once more, the guys were all gone…and sexy young Nick stood in the center of the stage all alone. Vince put on “Strip It Down.” It’s a country music song by Luke Bryan that Nick insisted on. The country music thing was a big change for me in the club. But two weeks ago, when Steve had brought this kid to me and told me they went to school together and he’d seen him dance, I was willing to give him a shot. He was way too pretty to turn away. Once I saw him dance, and more importantly, watched him strip…I didn’t care if he wanted to play gospel music. I gave him two weeks to get his routines together and advanced him some cash to get a few costumes and tonight was his big debut.
