“I wouldn’t want to miss my savior’s happy day for anything in the world,” Lotte said and then giggled. “Although I would hope that at least one of us will get a real wedding.”

Peter raised a brow, and Anna said, “I’ll explain later, darling.”

“Alexandra, the train south departs over there,” Anna said, heading for the other side of the station.

“Wait.” Lotte tugged at her sleeve, guilt written all over her face.

“Oh, no! What have you done now?” Anna felt the ground move beneath her feet.

“Promise you won’t tell Mutter for now?” Lotte begged her with huge puppy eyes.

  Anna sighed, but nodded.

“I’m going East. Alexandra Wagner, freshly baked German Wehrmachtshelferin and English spy, has orders to report to the military administration tomorrow morning regarding my new position as radio operator in Warsaw.”

Peter’s eyes widened with every word. “You can’t do that. It’s much too dangerous. Warsaw may seem firmly in German hands, but the Red Army is approaching and the Polish Home Army ready for a counterstrike. You’ll most certainly die.”

“I’d rather die trying to save what is left of my country than hide one day longer in the convent.” Lotte shrugged and then she took a step towards Peter to hug him tight. “Take care of my sister, big man.”

Next thing Anna knew, her baby sister had boarded a train to Warsaw.

  Author’s Notes

  Dear Reader,

Thank you so much for reading WAR GIRL ANNA.

At the end of War Girl Lotte, Anna was left in a predicament, but I knew she would somehow find a way out.

Writing Anna’s book was very challenging at times, because she had to endure so much. I must confess that at times I hated her a bit for being so weak and not resisting more openly, but in the end she found her moral compass and acted accordingly.

And Peter, don’t get me started about him. I loved him from the first moment he appeared in the story. The character of Peter was inspired by my visit to the Warsaw Uprising Museum. He’ll definitely get his own book, because I want to write about those incredibly brave and courageous Poles, fighting for their freedom.

As you know I like to incorporate true events into my stories and have sprinkled the names of famous persons from the forties into the story. Professor Scherer is a fictional person, but there really was a doctor called Georg Bessau at the Charité. He was the head physician of the pediatrics clinic and responsible for carrying out excruciating tuberculosis vaccination experiments on handicapped children who often died after long periods of suffering.

The Schwanenwerder Island already featured in my book Unyielding, and in my research I found out that apart from Goebbels and other high-society Nazis, there lived only one ordinary family on the island. The Schertz family owned the smallest house on Schwanenwerder. And here’s the interesting fact: Mr. Schertz had been dismissed from his job as police officer because he belonged to the free masons. Nevertheless little Georg played often with Helmut Goebbels – the only boy in the same age on the exclusive island.

Apparently Joseph and Magda Goebbels were more worried that their son would become too “feminine” playing with his five sisters, than they were of letting him play with the son of a Freemason.

Many thanks go as usual to my fantastic cover designer Daniela Colleo from stunningbookcovers.com who has been ever patient with my constant tweaks and changes to have the perfect cover.

Tami Stark, my editor, and Martin O’Hearn my proofreader make sure this book the best it can be and clean up typos, unclear sentences, or anachronistic terms.

More thanks go to JJ Toner, an author of Second World War Fiction himself who generously offered to beta-read War Girl Anna. He’s one of the best proofreaders around, except for his insistence to use British English as opposed to American English 

Jaroslaw Pacewicz, a former colleague of mine has helped me with translations into Polish.

But my biggest thanks goes out to all the wonderful readers in the Second World War Club Facebook group, for their constant support and valuable input. I love you!

If you’re seeking a group of wonderful people who have an interest in WW2 fiction, you are more than welcome to join our group.

Again, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read my book and if you liked it (or even if you didn’t) I would appreciate a sincere review.

Last but not least I want to thank my family for not letting me become a hermit, holed up in my writing cave day and night.
