Puppy Love and Mistletoe

Amelia shook her head, unable to find her voice. He still cared even though she had stupidly shut him out when he was only doing his job. “My feelings haven’t changed either.”
He put his arms around her waist and pulled her closer. “You know Lily orchestrated this whole thing with Jet. She was sure the dog would go directly to your house and you would have to bring him back.”
“That did happen.”
“But not before she got a scolding for taking such a chance with her pet and not without a lot of tears.” Shaking his head, Scott pressed his lips together. “She was in big trouble, but it all worked out in the end because I did a lot of praying.”
“Praying is always good.” Amelia nodded.
“And one more thing. I’ve decided that you were right. I’m going to make plans to adopt Lily.”
Amelia hugged him. “That’s wonderful.”
“It won’t change anything for Lily. She already thinks of me as her dad. I just have to make it official.”
“That will be a fabulous Christmas present for you both.”
“Daddy, look up.” Lily hung over the stairway railing, something dangling from one hand.
“What have you got there?”
“It’s mistletoe. Kiss her, Daddy. Kiss her.”
Scott grinned up at Lily. “Why should I do that?”
“’Cause you’re supposed to kiss under the mistletoe. I saw you kiss her before, so I know you like her lots.” Lily wiggled the sprig of mistletoe above their heads.
Scott gave Amelia a wry smile. “I think someone has been sneaking out of bed when she isn’t supposed to. What do you think Santa will say about that?”
“Santa likes love,” Lily replied.
Jet barked.
“See—even Jet agrees.”
“I agree, too.” Scott gazed at Amelia. “What do you think?”
“Me, too.” Amelia slipped her arms around Scott’s neck, and he kissed her. Her heart soared while little hands clapped and Jet barked his approval.
This was going to be the best Christmas ever, and she had a little girl and a little black dog to thank.
