Wulf said, “If you act on any other information, no matter how you obtain it, there will be more repercussions.”

“The rest of the family won’t allow that to happen.”

A few years ago, that might have been true, but they saw the operating budget for Schloss Marienburg, and most realized that a change in its status would mean a significant increase in their dividends from the family trusts. “Go ahead. Try me on this.”

“They’ll vote you out as head of the house.”

“Make your run. We’ll see how far you get.”

“You can’t marry that common woman! I won’t grant you the status of a dynastic marriage!”

“Elizabeth already did. She is the one with the authority, and we have been legally married for months. Our children will bear your titles, and if, God forbid, we are ever restored, they will sit on your throne. Enough of this nonsense. You always have been irrelevant in my life. Now, make yourself as absent in our lives as you were when I was a child.”

Wulf thumbed his phone and hung up.

This time, he whipped the phone at the wall.

It shattered in a bright spray of glass in the dim recessed lights.

  The Shadows

From the shadows of the German forest, back where the trees were at their thickest, a woman’s voice whispered Wulf’s name. He turned, peering through the darkness.

Wulf opened his eyes in the night. Glowing blue numbers on the clock read two-fifty.

  “Wulf?” Rae asked.

He stretched and turned over, kicking the tight sheets off his leg. “Yes? You need?”

Her shaky inhale startled him needle-sharp awake.

Her voice was choked. “I’m bleeding.”

He wrapped his arms around her, holding her as his heart trembled. “We’ll go to hospital now. Come to the car. Carefully. We don’t need a fall to make this worse.” He held her light fingers in his and whispered, “I love you. Know that: I love you.”

Ryan doesn’t want to commit and Tab wants to play.

They’re a perfect match. Just for one night.

  CHAPTER ONE

“Lady Liberty, I presume,” says a deep voice behind me. This voice is world-wide famous. It’s been filmed auctioning some of the most expensive Old Master paintings. It belongs to Steve Goldsmith.

During the day he’s one of my bosses at Goldsmith and Evans Auctioneers. At night, the conqueror of the art market swaps his silk suit for weathered leathers and becomes the magnificent Master S, undisputed Lord of Laura’s Dungeon. The very private and special club, James Evans and him created for Laura, the wife they share.

I twirl around to show the splendid costume that my friend Elise has created for me. Her specialty is plus-size clothes but once in a while she’ll design something for me so that I won’t feel the odd woman out in her fluffy universe.

“Very nice,” James calls out from the men’s locker door. He is still wearing his suit, just going in to change.

“Thank you, Masters,” I say, bending in a mock curtsy.

“Are you feeling submissive tonight?” Master S asks, taking my arm as we walk in the direction of the bar of the club. My choice of costume is the answer to his question but he always makes sure of everything. He’s thorough like that.

  “Yes, Master.”

He makes a strange sound at my answer. What did I do wrong?

  That’s the problem a
bout being a Switch. Sometimes I think I’m acting like a good sub and then I do something quirky. I can’t help myself; I do my best to turn into a doe but a few leopard spots remain in my fur.

I frown, trying to figure it out because, right this instant, I have no idea what I’m doing wrong. Master S laughs at my expression.

“No, no, I’m sorry, Tab, there’s nothing wrong with you. You’re perfect as you are.” I raise my eyebrows suspiciously. Despite the fact that Master S is not prone to flattery, I have severe doubts. The only thing I’m perfect at is suspicion and it turns out that I’m right to be that way.

“You’re perfect for someone I would like you to meet tonight.”

I’m not puzzled, I’m floored. Master S has never tried to set me up with anyone. He’s a regular matchmaker but so far, in all the years we’ve known each other and played in the same clubs, he’s never tried his talent on me. I asked him once why and he said it was because of my suspicious nature.

“I told you I would only make a suggestion when I felt sure enough,” he says. “Well, tonight I think I have found someone who will suit you.” I’m about to open my mouth to remind him that I don’t want a committed relationship, that I love my freedom too much but he holds up a hand to let me know he’s not finished yet. “One of the reasons why this man is such a good match is that he’s not looking for a steady relationship either.”

Master S pushes one of the large double doors open and, with a movement of the chin, directs me to look at one side of the bar. Low enough so his voice is covered by the ambient sound, he asks, “So which one of those newbies do you think it is?”

There are four men standing at the bar. Two of them I know quite well; they’re part of New York’s finest and they are some very tough Doms. They are new to this place but not new to the lifestyle so I’ve seen them around before. That leaves the two others. They’re about the same build, strong, very strong, and, by the way they stand, I would bet my favorite corset that they are either military or some sort of hot shot intervention team members.

While I wait for Master S to say hello to a couple by the door, I stare at the two men and one of the pair turns around. He’s rather good looking but doesn’t do anything for me. Blue eyes, crew cut, nice. Too nice actually. He elbows his buddy who turns around slowly, his movement conjuring up in my mind the image of a majestuous feline moving with caution. The man looks in my direction and observes me, standing there in my red, white and blue outfit, sagely waiting for the Master of the Dungeon to lead me to him.

I look back at him and I know.

There’s not a single doubt in my mind.

  It’s him….

  CHAPTER TWO

“How come Ryan gets a play date and I don’t?”

The man has a whiny voice. He sounds like a five year old complaining that he hasn’t been invited to a party by a class mate. He may dress like a Dom but he’s a sub. Not one that would appeal to me if I were to switch mood.

Some people can be pleasant to look at and yet not sexy at all. He’s like the male counterpart of a Barbie doll. Well, maybe not. If memory serves me right, those dolls are not anatomically correct and one look down to his skin-tight pants confirms that he still has all his original parts.

“’Cause I’m going away,” Ryan says. “I deserve a treat before I jump down into hell.”

The man’s answer tickles my curiosity but I know better than to ask anything. I take a good look at him from across the room before lowering my gaze, as the sweet sub I’m supposed to be. I just need to close my eyes to see his face. It’s so spectacular, it’s etched in my brain.

Now that we’re close, I have an urge to touch his scar. It’s like a slash across half of his face. The half with the blue eye. I wonder if his injury caused his heterochromia or if his eyes were already of different colors before. He smiled when he looked at me but only one corner of his face moved. The lack of symmetry is fascinating and strangely sexy.

Ryan walks around his friend to come closer to me. I think he’s favoring one side as he walks. Is he still injured or his limp permanent? The more I see of him, the more questions I have.

“Tabitha, look at me,” he says and his voice is smooth like velvet.

I raise my eyes and look up to him while Master S frees the arm he was holding.

“Tabitha, would you like to play with me tonight?” he asks.

“Yes, Sir, I think I would like that very much.” My voice is firm. This is my poker voice. Not a hint of confusion filters out. Or so I hope.

Our eyes remained locked as he gently traces the line of my jaw with his knuckles and this simple touch makes me tremble. So much for hiding my reactions to him.

“You get that it’s just for the night.” His tone is affirmative and I like that he needs to make sure I understand where he stands.

“Yes Sir, Master S made it clear. I understand it’s no strings attached.” The expression is so inappropriate, a smile spreads on my lips. Somehow, I’m pretty sure I will get tied down.

Hell, I would be very disappointed if I didn’t!

He smiles back at me and winks.

“Would you be okay with a private room?”

There’s probably too much relief in my voice when I answer, “I would actually prefer it, Sir.”

“You’re not afraid of being alone with me?”

I’m not sure I understand the question. There are cameras in every room and monitors watching so no, I’m not afraid. Also, if he’s here it means he’s been vetted by Master S.

  “Should I be frightened, Sir?”

He comes closer to me and whispers in my ear, “I think you should. Just a little.”

He’s playing me, I know it but nevertheless I shiver. Every hair on my body is raised. I get a grip on myself and look at his extraordinary face again.

“You will respect my safe word if I use it, Sir.”

I meant it as a statement but it comes out as a question.

“Of course, I will. Will red work?”

“Yes, red is fine, Sir, I do not have another.”

He raises an eyebrow—the one on the non-injured side of his face—but doesn’t comment. Unlike most women my age, I’ve never felt the need to pick one that would be more meaningful. Laura though about using Hieronymus Bosch or just Bosch for the image it conjures but she decided against it; it was too much trouble. As far as I know, she’s like me, sticking to red.

“Did you reserve a room?” Master S asks.

“Oh yes. I got the black one,” Ryan says and I shiver again.

Truth be told, the room scares me. I don’t even go into it when I’m in Domme mode.

Way back, when the Dungeon opened, I told myself that I needed to visit it during the day when the cleaning crew was here and the place was lit with glaring lights but Master S didn’t let me. He said something about keeping the magic alive. Surprisingly, Laura agreed with him; she was quite adamant when she explained that there had to be one room that held some mystery for me.

How fitting that Ryan picked my very own mystery room. The walls are covered with a shiny black lacquer and the floor is black marble from Italy. I know because I checked the initial order. It will be cold to the touch. The lights are very dim and the furniture is somber.

Heterochromia must not affect the quality of vision otherwise the man wouldn’t take a black girl in a black room … would he?

  ***

  CHAPTER THREE

Ryan leads me to the black room. He’s a step behind me, one hand on the back of my neck, his grip possessive, strong but not brutal. We reach our destination and he closes the door behind us without letting go of me. He leads me to the Saint Andrew cross, turns me around to face him, pulls on the tie that closes my dress and pushes it down my shoulder. His gaze follows the colorful silk as it pools on the floor at my feet and, then, his eyes come up again, slowly as if trying to commit my naked body to memory.

The way he studies me is so intense
, I’m unsettled, unsure where to look yet not brave enough to close my eyes. He takes my choices away with a black scarf. The one that he was wearing around his neck. Being blinded usually gets to me but, tonight, I forget my fear. I’m too distracted by his smell. I breathe in. Manly and spicy. While I inhale his essence, Ryan gently raises one of my arms and ties it up. He does the same with the other. I feel his breath on my forehead.

His gestures are slow but without hesitation. I feel he knows what he’s doing and enjoys taking his time to do it. Nothing is to be rushed. Does he know that the slower he goes the wilder my imagination runs? Is my anticipation part of his thrill? Has he decided what’s coming next? Does he have a plan already laid out or will he improvise to take my reactions into account?

One hand rests on each of my wrists, his arms against mine, his lips on my forehead. His fingers slide under the restraints, testing their tightness and then they slide, light as feathers, down my arms, along my shoulders and up to my neck.

He cups my face in his hands and nibbles on my lower lip until my mouth opens. His hands journey south and come to rest on my breasts. He kisses me like he owns me, caresses me as if he already knew my body by heart.

  Our chemistry is extraordinary.

No one has ever stolen my breath away like this. I whimper under his touch and my back arches. My legs are still free, and I could wrap them around him but I know better; he’s the Dom, he’ll decide. I fight back this urge.
