The valley is where Raeden and I have made the headquarters for our new organization, Raelex. Yeah, I know it’s silly to just combine our names and make it a company name, but it has a certain ring to it that we both have a fondness for. We’ve even hired Rex and the other Krillux to help us oversee the business.

Since we’ve been living on Ventra, we’ve learned from traders and other inter-planet visitors that some of them are also facing a decline in energy resources. Raelex’s goal is to safely mine the Ventran mineral, and to distribute it to planets in need. Our other team, based on Raeden’s idea, specializes in combating the galactic slave trade, rescuing countless lives, and reuniting them with their families. It is incredibly rewarding work, and it’s a relief for me to know that I’m doing something good with my life other than committing myself to my father’s expectations.

Oh, I guess I should mention what happened with that. The message that we put together was transmitted to the space program. Since then, there have been further investigations into corruption on other ships. My father was stripped of his title, of course, and he is now in a federal prison, along with Cal, who was considered an accomplice. It’s hard not being able to talk to my dad, but Raeden has really helped me find peace in this situation.

Hali found some hacking work on a mysterious moon, the details of which she still won’t disclose to me, so it must be really secretive. Probably the government stuff she’s always dreamed of working on. The last time I communicated with her via hologram, she was sitting with Ret, her long-lost space boyfriend, and I felt an immense amount of pride that she finally found him.

On the way to Raelex HQ, Raeden and I enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest: the mysterious melodies of the Ventran birds and the sweet smells of the air.

“You know what we haven’t done in a while?” Raeden asks me.

“Hm, it’s been a while since we’ve had sex,” I joke.

“We did last night!” He defends.

“I know, and it’s been far too long since then,” I tell him. He shakes his head, and picks up a nearby stick.

“I was going to say, we haven’t sparred in a while,” he says, handing me the stick. I look at it, wanting so badly to fight with him, remembering the fun times we had during our secret sessions back on the Cordelia.

I hand the stick back to him, feeling a rush of sudden excitement. “I can’t accept your request to fight,” I say valiantly. His smile fades, and he looks concerned.

“You don’t want to?” He asks.

“I don’t know,” I say. “I think you might have to be a little more careful with me from now on. At least … for several months.”

His eyes widen in confusion, and to help him out, I put my hands over my stomach. Suddenly, he gets it.

“Are you serious?” He asks, his eyes saucer-wide. I nod at him, and Raeden shouts so loud with joy that it scares the birds out of their nests.

He grabs onto me, holding me close to him. “This is the best news,” he says to me. And I agree.

We’re going to have a baby, and what better place to raise it than on my dearest love’s home planet?

  PROLOGUE:

  JOCELYN

My dream begins with me standing in an endless desert, drenched in blue and orange from a sun that is yet to rise. I look down, and realize I was wearing nothing but a thin layer of glossy fabric, which is gently wrapped around my chest, and draped down my legs. I feel wild and free out here, as though I could spend my lifetime wandering in this strange universe.

Something is calling me, a shadowy figure that is approaching me from the horizon. I can’t make out his face, but he’s muscular. The shadow of his hair blows in the breeze. He’s a strange outline of a man, as if he has left his shadow behind, with me. I try to call out to him, but he doesn’t understand, and I can’t form the words. But, we don’t need words here.

His arms enclose me, pulling me closer. His grasp is so firm, and his body feels warm pressed against mine. I’ve never had a dream like this, before. I feel as if even my subconscious is too shy to come up with these sorts of scenarios. But, I’ve decided to go along with this one; just this once.

“Are you what I’ve been looking for?” A cool, calm voice asks me. I don’t know what to say. I was worried if I said no, he’ll disappear.

“Yes,” I decide, just to keep the story going; just a bit more.

His mouth moves closer to my ear, breathing me in as he kisses my neck. Suddenly, we rise up into the sky, gravity losing us. He swirls me around in the big open sky, so that my back is towards him. The thin fabric around me keeps him from getting any closer, as my bottom brushes against something long and throbbing. I shudder as he slowly starts to pull the draping from my shoulders. The fabric slips past my breasts, down my stomach, and over my feet, fluttering back to the desert dust, and leaving me completely naked and vulnerable.

His hands reach around my chest, his shadowy fingers cupping my breasts, rubbing lightly around my nipples. My heart is pounding now, ringing through my ears as I can feel myself throbbing, swelling, wanting more. I’ve never experienced this in waking life, but I feel, in this moment, that this is all I ever needed, even if it is a dream. He pushes me away from him, and I continue to float gently through the air. He glides over to me, spreading apart my legs carefully with strong arms. I can just make out the ridges in his shoulders as he puts my legs over them. His lips kiss my stomach, finding their way down my legs. His hands search as well as they grab my thighs hungrily.

I was aching inside, and I let out a small, gentle cry as he slips his tongue over my vulva. It’s warm and wet, and I can’t tell if it’s just me, or if it’s from him, sliding in between my lips. He carefully inserts his fingers. I can feel them searching, until they hit, just a perfect spot inside. I curse under my breath, the sensation so foreign to me, but simply amazing. He pulls away, leaving me wanting more. Suddenly, he’s floating above me. I feel the hard, throbbing tip of his penis, brushing ever so slightly against me, wanting so badly to enter. I moan, wanting him to take me in that instant.

But he pulls away, leaving me floating. The shadow fades away, one bit at a time.

“I have chosen you, Earth woman. I’ll be looking for you…soon, I hope.” I try to reach out for him, but he disappears.

I wake up in a panic, alone. My sheets are soaking wet from my subconscious encounter. Who was that man…and what did he mean when he said he’d be looking for me?

  CHAPTER 1: ARRIVAL

  JOCELYN

It was now eight hours since I quit Henley’s Labs, and I hadn’t stopped driving. I watched the canyons pass by me, tall towering columns of red clay that stretched toward an open sky. I’d be reunited with my mother in just a few more miles. A couple of months ago, she was sent on a top-secret dig in the Mojave Desert, and wasn’t allowed to discuss anything with me. The curiosity burned so deep in mem for those next few months, and I longed to go with her, but I was still stuck at Henley’s, working as an assistant biologist. That’s where I met Wes.

I haven’t had much luck with guys in my twenty-six years of existence. It wasn’t my pin-straight hair, or the freckles on my cheeks. It wasn’t even the hint of extra curve peeking around my hips. Apparently, one reason why I can’t get a date is that some men are afraid to talk to me. It starts out okay; basic back-and-forth talk, but the second I bring up my job, everything falls apart. Suddenly, they look at me as if I have something growing on my face. To be fair, I’ve had my share of acne from time to time, but this is something different.

Wes looked at me like this, after we went up to my apartment - when he tried pulling down the straps of a way-too revealing dress, making my face burn bright-red. His touch felt strange to me, and not in a good way. The second reason why I can’t get
a date is because I was a little…inexperienced. I mean… I still haven’t even kissed anyone, so even the slightest touch was completely new to me. I dodged the kiss Wes was about to give me, which immediately cost me more.

During the next week, Wes used our bad date to blackmail me. He told the supervisor some pretty harsh rumors about me, to the point where I just couldn’t explain anymore. So, I packed everything up and left. I was trying to accomplish at least one major breakthrough in my career, and if this place really was just a big watering hole for gossip, I didn’t want to be a part of it. Luckily for me, when I told my mother the news, she said she had an extra spot open for a biologist at the Mojave dig site. I grabbed my equipment and a large coffee and sped towards the desert, a bright opportunity leading the way.

I still didn’t have a clue what could be going on out there, but for some reason I kept picturing a figure…the one from my dream last night. I could still feel his touch, soft and warm, spreading all the way up my legs. But, I had to stop myself, before I got too excited. After all, it was only a dream.

I pulled up to the facility, where a team of scientists was already waiting, their white lab coats blinding against the red sandy backdrop. One of them wore a mask, and stepped up to my open car window.

“Are you Jocelyn Lee?” she inquired.

“Yes, I am” I replied curtly.

The scientist laughed a laugh I recognized instantly. “No need to be so formal,” she said, taking off her mask.

My mother has freckles spread across her cheeks like mine. The same blue eyes peeked over her glasses to get a better look at me. “It’s been such a long time, Joss! It’s so good to see you.”

I stepped out of the car and embraced her. Her coat appeared even dustier, up close. “Been busy I see,” I joked.

She pulled away, still smiling at me. She led me towards a wall of blue tarps that were strung up along metal pipes. “We’ve been digging for days. We actually hit a great opening point just a few hours ago. We’ve just been given the go-ahead to crack it open now.”

We suited up at wooden opening to the dig site. As I was pulling on the white coveralls, I just caught a glimpse of piled up dirt around the edge of a crater.

“We’ve just been given the go-ahead to crack it open now,” My mother had said.

“Crack what open?” I asked, inching my feet into rubber boots.

  “Well, my dear…the spaceship.”

The dig site was about half-a-football-field wide. I circled around it, maneuvering past people in coveralls, most of them masked. They were scattered around something large and metallic that peeked out from the rocks and dirt. A low hum was coming from it. At such a low frequency it vibrated in my bones.
