He had lost all sense of time or place and he had no idea how long he had been where he was or if he had never not been there. He scanned every direction for any bearing. His eyes searched for a hint of light or a landmark of some kind. He had no idea if he was even looking at all. He began to panic somewhat and he realized how helpless he was. He cried out, but he wasn't sure if he even made a noise.

After what felt like an eternity in the blackness, a speck of light appeared before him. He had no idea if he was just seeing if for the first time and it had always been there, or if it had somehow materialized before him, but he could distinctly see a spot of light or something in front of him. It was as faint as a distant star and it seemed to be growing larger. He reached up and covered his eyes with his hands to make sure that he wasn’t going crazy. When he removed his hands he saw the point of light again and this time it was much larger than when he had first noticed it. A peculiar feeling came over him as he sensed that he was somehow in motion. He appeared to be gaining speed and he had the sudden realization that the light wasn’t growing larger. He was actually moving rapidly towards it.

He began to feel queasy as he accelerated. Streaks of light began to appear and disappear all around him. They became more and more common and soon he felt that the light he had seen in the distance was now all around him. He eyes adjusted and he could see that he was within a tube of light and he was moving at an incredible velocity. The tube seemed to stretch on into the oblivion. The light began to grow in intensity until it was unbearable for him to look at it. Suddenly there was a tremendous flash of light and he felt himself flattening out as he was drawn into the void.

Then he hit something hard. He lay there for a moment as his heart raced. He couldn’t see anything except for a strange, bleak, grayness. It looked like wet stone. He then realized that he was staring at what appeared to be a rock wall or a floor.

“How was your trip?” a familiar voice said from above him. He looked back and saw that he was laying on a stone slab. He could see his body laid out before him and he knew that he was intact, but he still had no idea where he was.

“Rise up, my dear sweet Robert,” the voice of Commander Holrathu said as his hulking metallic frame stepped forward from the shadows.

“Oh thank god. You saved me,” Robert said as a wave of relief flashed over him. “I thought I was going to be lost out there forever. What happened? I thought I was done for. Well, anyway I am eternally grateful that you saved my life.”

“Oh, my dear sweet Robert, how funny you are. Do you really think that you have been saved?” Commander Holrathu said with a chuckle. “After we get through with you, you’ll wish that you had been obliterated in that explosion. I warned you about what happens to those who disappoint our Royal Emperor. Guards, take this wretch to his holding cell while he awaits his punishment.”

Two fearsome metal guards stepped out of the darkness clutching gigantic staffs. They closed in on Robert who cowered in fear before the towering guards.

“You don’t understand. It’s not my fault. I did everything you asked me to do,” Robert screamed as the guards pointed their staffs at Robert. Two red beams of energy shot out of their staffs and they seized Robert around each wrist. The guards hauled Robert up off of the ground and began to drag him away.

“Oh, I understand very well, my dear Robert,” Commander Holrathu said as he watched Robert being dragged away into the darkness. “I understand that you made a mess and now I have to go and clean it up.”
