Bang Gang Page 31

  He smirked. “Yeah, right.”

I tutted, starting rooting in my bag. “You have two girls, Darren, antiseptic cream isn’t some kind of crazy novelty.” I pulled out a couple of Ruby’s sweets and some plasters. The antiseptic cream was right at the bottom. I pulled out an antibacterial wipe and closed the distance between us. “Can I?”

  He grunted, nodded his head.

I wiped his lip and he didn’t even flinch, just stared at me. I put some cream onto my finger and dabbed it on. It made my tummy flutter.

“I’m not a baby,” he said. “Thanks, though.”

A baby. My legs felt wobbly.

He checked his t-shirt, saw the blood splatter. “Jimmy made quite a fucking mess of me.” He slipped past me and headed down the hall. I followed him to his bedroom doorway, stared at him as he sat on his bed, pulled his t-shirt off over his head and found a fresh one.

  Now or never.

  I took a breath.

  “I’m pregnant,” I said.

He stopped moving, stopped doing anything. Stopped even breathing, I think.

A long silence, and we just looked at each other.

“Well?” I said. “Are you going to say something?”

He looked at the floor. “Is it, um. Is it mine?”

My cheeks burned, horror washing over me. I put my hands on my belly, fought the urge to cry. He looked up and saw my face, and his eyes widened.

“Of course it’s yours!” I spat. “Jesus, Darren, how could you even think it wouldn’t be?!”

I shook my head, reeling. I turned away and propped myself against the doorframe.

“I didn’t know!” he said. “For fuck’s sake, Jo, I’ve had that bitch Lorraine in my head, spouting fucking all sorts. You came to me for a fucking gangbang, that’s what you wanted! Another one, too! How am I supposed to know what to think? All this new hair and clothes and fancy makeup, how am I supposed to know what you’re doing? What you want? Who you’re fucking seeing?”

“I told you I loved you!” I said. I couldn’t even look at him. “I can’t believe you’d think that of me after all these years. I wanted you, Darren! I always wanted you!” The tears came, welled up. I sniffed them back but he heard me.

“Fucking hell, Jo, I’m sorry. I’m sorry, alright!” He kicked the bedside table. “I’m such a fucking prick, I never know what to fucking say. Always putting my fucking foot in it.”

I wiped my eyes, turned back around. “Stop,” I said. “I’m ok. We just need to talk… need to plan… I don’t work at the cafe anymore and I’m scared… I need to know you’ll help me… if you’ll help me…”

He looked like I’d slapped him. “Of course I’ll fucking help you.”

I choked a sob of relief. “Thanks,” I said. “I’m happy, I think. I mean it’s crazy, and it was stupid, and I’m scared, and it’s all messed up, but I’m happy.”

  He nodded. “That’s good.”

“That’s all you’ve got to say, is it? That’s good?” I shrugged. “Say something, Darren! For once in your life just fucking say something, will you? Tell me how you feel! Tell me anything! Just give me something! I’m out on a limb here and I’m all alone!”

“You’re never alone, Jo,” he said. “I’m always right fucking here.”

I brushed stupid tears away, and he fumbled in his bedside drawer.

My heart raced as he shoved his hand to the back, rustled around in the paperwork.

  No.

  Please God no.

He pulled out the ring box and my heart turned cold. So cold.

He dropped to one knee, and opened the box, just like that, on his bedroom carpet amongst his dirty clothes.

  I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t fucking think.

“Will you marry me, Jo? Say you’ll fucking marry me.” His eyes were so intense.

I pulled a face, a horrible face. “Good God, no!” I said.

I stumbled to my feet, reeling. Feeling like a stupid fucking idiot.

  “But I thought… you said you…”

Her eyes were so cold. “You want me to wear someone else’s ring?! Some other woman’s ring? Like being second choice isn’t bad enough without having Stacey’s fucking engagement ring on my finger, Darren!” She put her hand to her forehead, paced back and forth. “I can’t believe you’d ask me that, with her ring!”

I stared at the box, mute. Just fucking mute.

It took me a second to find my tongue.

“This was never Stacey’s fucking ring, Jo! Jesus Christ, what do you fucking take me for?” I rooted in the bedside drawer, threw out papers until I found the receipt. I handed it to her and she took it, eyes wide. “It was your fucking ring! It was always your ring! She found it, thought it was for her, like I’d have ever fucking proposed to her! I never loved her, Jo! I loved you, I always loved you!” I stared at her as she read the recept. “She ditched me when she found out the truth, and I was glad. I was fucking glad!”

“Carmarthen…” she said, and her voice was so low, so faint. “When Ruby was just a baby… that year we went… stayed in the caravan with Mum and Dad…”

“Yes!” I said. “Mia won that crappy pink plastic ring in the arcade and it was too big for her. You wore it on your ring finger all day, and it fit, can you remember? You flashed it in my face and gave me a smile and I knew you’d say yes. I hoped you’d say yes! I went out the next morning for bacon and eggs, and I drove back into town, went to the jewellers in the market square, the posh one. You thought I’d been to the slot machines, but I hadn’t! I took the plastic ring from the draining board. You’d left it there when you were washing up. Mia asked where it was and you looked for it, said you’d have to win another one, but it was in my pocket, Jo! It was in my pocket the whole time, I took it to them and they measured it, used it for size!” I reached up into the wardrobe, pulled out an old shoebox. I threw the contents on the bed, old pictures and letters and postcards, all of them from Jo, all of them about Jo. I found the plastic ring and held it up. “See? It was your ring, Jodie! I wanted to propose to you!”

I stared at her and she stared back.

I sighed, ran my fingers through my hair. “We came home and I got that big taxi job in at the garage, long fucking hours. It was shit, I was knackered, and I lost you! We fell apart those couple of months, I watched it happen, and I had that fucking ring in that fucking drawer the whole fucking time! We were going to go back on holiday! To stay in that same caravan again! I wanted to propose on the beach! I wanted to make it all fucking romantic, like, but it was too late. We were long fucking done by then, you went on your own!”

“I didn’t think you were happy… I didn’t think you wanted me…” She let out a sob, and I felt it in my gut.

“Jesus, Jodie, I always fucking wanted you. I never fucking wanted anything else!”

She read the receipt again as though she couldn’t quite believe it. “You never said anything, never tried to get me back…”

“I wanted to,” I said. “But you were moving in with Nanna and busy at the cafe. You seemed so fucking sure!”

“I wasn’t sure!” she said. “I was never sure! I cried every fucking night for a year, Darren! Over a year!”

“Well, we’re both fucking hopeless then, aren’t we?” I sat on the bed, completely fucking spent, twisting that pink plastic ring in my fingers.

She came and sat beside me, so near and yet so fucking far. “I always hoped you’d come back, I really did. I always hoped maybe one day we’d make it. And then there was Stacey… and it broke my heart… I couldn’t even…” She took a breath. “I thought you were going to marry her, I thought our girls would be bridesmaids…”

“Never,” I said. “I’d never have married her.”

“And then you split up… but you never said… you never…”

“You were with Brian,” I said. “By the time I’d got my act together enough to take the risk, you were already with Brian. And there was Lorraine… she said
you didn’t want me, said you were long over it…”

  “That fucking bitch.”

“Don’t I fucking know it.” I’d never needed a cigarette so bad. My leg was tapping. “I haven’t fucked anyone,” I said. “Not since the night you came here.”

“I know,” she said. “Buck told me.”

  I smiled. “Interfering prick.”

She laughed, a quiet laugh. “Good job he is.”

“Yeah, I’ll have to buy him a pint.”

  “He said that…”

“I bet he fucking did.” I dared to reach out, took her hand, praying she didn’t fucking pull away.

  She didn’t.

She took the plastic ring from me and slipped it on her ring finger. “Still fits,” she said.

My breath caught in my throat. “I fucking love you, Jodie. I always loved you.”

“Can I see it?” she said. She gestured to the ring box. “Since it was mine and all…”

“It’s still yours,” I said. I passed her the box.

She flipped it open and her eyes welled up. I stared at her staring at that ring and my heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears.

“Ask me again,” she said. “Unless you’re too drunk to mean it.”

“I’m not fucking drunk,” I said. “Not anymore, and even if I was I’d still fucking mean it.”

I dropped down to the floor at the side of the bed, took the box from her and held it up, making myself say it for the second fucking time, even though my throat was dry and my heart was going fucking crazy. “Marry me, Jodie. Will you marry me? Please say you’ll fucking marry me, I’m out on a fucking limb here.”

She looked into my eyes. “This isn’t for the girls, right? It’s not for the baby, either?”

“No,” I said. “Christ, Jo, I love those girls more than I love life itself, and I’ll love the new one just as fucking much, but this is about you. It’s always been about you.” I closed my eyes. Made myself say it. “I’m not so good with words, Jodie. Fuck knows, I’m not. But I know what I want. I want to come home, I want to be where you are. I can’t fucking stand being here without you. Please, Jo, just let me come home. I’d give anything to come home.”

I heard a little choke, felt her shaking. I dared to open my eyes and hers were wet.

  “Yes,” she said.

“Yes?” I had fucking shivers. “You serious? You’ll marry me?”

“Yes, I’ll marry you!” She was smiling. “My God, Darren, it’s what I always wanted. Always.”

“And I can come home?” I took a deep breath. “I can come home with you? For good?”

She wrapped her arms around my neck and it was the greatest thing I’ve ever felt.

“You better fucking had do,” she said.

  The ring fit. It fit.

It sparkled under Darren’s bedroom light like the most beautiful star I’d ever seen. Only it wasn’t Darren’s bedroom light, not anymore.

He finished up packing some stuff into a suitcase. Dropped it by the bedroom door.

“That should do for now,” he said.

I smiled. “We’ll come back for the rest.”

  He nodded.

I pulled him close, brushed my thumb so gently against his sore lip. “We’ve got two girls out there itching to catch the rest of the fireworks. I promised them doughnuts and sparklers.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Then they shall have doughnuts and sparklers, I’ll pop back for the case after.” He pressed his hand to my belly. “How far gone?”

“A couple of weeks,” I said. “It’s early.”

“Too early to tell the girls.”

I nodded. “We’ll tell them at Christmas. An extra surprise.”

  “Sounds good to me.”

  “Sounds good to me, too.”

He sighed. “We’ll do things different this time round, Jo. I’ll be home for dinner, I’ll help with the baby, make sure things are better this time.”

“I know,” I said. “We’re different people now, Darren. Different but the same, maybe a little older and wiser, hey?”

He laughed. “Not so sure about that. I don’t feel so fucking wise, Jodie. Older, that’s true enough.”

I wrapped my arms around his neck, and his thumbs brushed my cheeks, held me there. When he kissed me he tasted of beer and blood. He smelled like Darren Trent, too. Of oil and cigarettes and that cool blue shower gel he’s been using forever.

“I love you, Jo,” he said. “I’ll always fucking love you.”

“And I love you,” I said. “I’m glad I’m having another of your babies. We make such beautiful children, Darren.”

He grinned and his eyes were beautiful. “Good job,” he said. “Because chances are you’ll be having another, too.”

I pulled away and took his hand, walked past his suitcase into the hallway. Fireworks were calling. Fireworks and our beautiful girls.

“Another?” I asked. “Jeez, Darren, how many kids do you want?!”

He laughed. “Ain’t about that, Jo. Can’t seem to fucking look at you without getting you pregnant. We’ll end up with a whole fucking network of garages at this fucking rate.”

  “Trent and sons.” I grinned.

He grinned right back. “Trent and fucking daughters, more like it.”

Tonya had already got the girls their doughnuts. They were covered in icing sugar, licking their sticky fingers.

I squeezed Darren’s hand as we approached, careful to keep my ring from view.

Ruby saw us first. “Daddd!” she squealed.

She bounded over and launched herself into his arms, full of questions about his face and whether he butt-hurt someone in the pub again.

“Think I might have done,” he said. “Sorry, Rubes, sometimes your dad can be a bit of a prick.” He dropped her to the ground and took her hand, took Mia’s too. He crouched down, at Ruby’s height and looked up at me. “Can I tell them?”

I nodded. “I think you best had.”

Ruby’s eyes were wide. “Tell us what, Dad?”

“Me and your mum. We’re getting married. I’m moving in with you, if you’ll have me. If that’s alright?” He looked between them, one to the other, but they didn’t speak, didn’t say a word. “I’d really like that,” he said. “We can be a proper family again, I’ll be there every day, every night… if that’s ok? Is that ok, girls?”

I looked at Tonya and her mouth was open wide. She fanned her face, and she was welling up, I saw it.

Ruby bit her lip, and her face crumpled. It made my breath catch in my throat.

“Yeah,” she said. “That’s ok!” She clung onto his neck and she was crying. “You’re really coming home, Dad? Really really?”

“Really really,” he said, and I’m sure his voice was thick. He looked up at Mia. “How do you feel about that, Mia? Can I come home? You alright with that?”

She nodded and her lip was going too. “Yeah, that’s ok… that’s really ok…” Her cool facade burst open and she wrapped her arms around my waist. “Thanks, Mum.”

“Don’t thank me,” I said, and my voice was wobbly. “Your dad was the one who proposed.”

I showed them the ring, and Tonya crammed in, too.

“Beautiful.” Ruby grinned. “Like a princess ring!”

“That’s really beautiful, Mum,” Mia said.

“Wow, Jo, that’s really something,” Tonya said.

I took a breath, smiled at Darren. “Yes, it really is.”

I reached for his hand and he squeezed right back. Took hold of Ruby’s with his other and I took hold of Mia’s. She took hold of Tonya’s and I laughed, started the walk over to the fireworks.

Ruby started waffling on and it made my heart soar.

We can watch Top Gear, Dad! And you’ll have to watch Question King with Nanna, too. We all watch it! You’ll read me a bedtime story, won’t you? Can I come to the garage with you before school? Will Mum be Mrs Trent now? Can I be a bridesmaid? We have fi
sh and chips on a Thursday, you can have them too if you like!

I was enjoying the monologue when a flash of expensive highlights appeared in the crowd in front of us.

Darren saw them too. His fingers crushed mine.

“Shall we turn back?” he whispered.

I shook my head. “When have you ever turned away from a confrontation in your life, Darren Trent?” I smirked and kept on walking.

Lorraine’s jaw dropped right open when she saw us, she turned to face me, and plastered a huge fake grin on her face.

“Jodie!” she said. “I’ve been trying to get hold of you, I just wanted to say…”

I flashed her a smile, one of my finest, and then I gave the bitch the fucking finger.

“Stay away from my family you skanky arsed hoe,” I said. “You can go fuck yourself.”

I brushed past her as she gawped and Darren was laughing. He dropped my hand long enough to light up a cigarette, and Ruby was right there staring up at me, her mouth was open as we watched Lorraine make an exit.

“Mum! You just used garage talk! I think you went and butt-hurt her! You butt-hurt Lorraine! Real bad, too!”

I ruffled her hair and smiled at Darren, and then I sighed.

“Sometimes people get butt-hurt,” I said. “And that’s ok. Sometimes in life you’ve just got to give people the finger and tell them they can go fuck themselves.” I smiled at her. “Just not too bloody often, Ruby, and not at school. Deal?”

She grinned her freckly face off.

  “Deal!” she said.

The fireworks were the best I’d ever fucking seen.

It was still dark when the door creaked open. The patter of Ruby feet sounded across the carpet, and then I felt her, her bony knees clambering up the bed, digging into my legs through the covers. She flung herself onto her back between Darren and me. I pretended to be asleep when I felt him move, just to hear their conversation.

I love listening to those two.

“Dadddd!” she whispered. “I think Father Christmas has been!”

  “You think, Rubes?”

“Yessss!” She giggled. “I crept downstairs and there’s presents everywhere. Shhh! Don’t tell Mum. She said no sneaking! Said to stay in bed in the morning until the sun comes up or the shit will fly!”
