I noticed Critter’s eyes kept dropping to my lips, and it set a wave of nerves through me. Critter was a playboy, and he would be looking for someone to warm his bed tonight. It wouldn’t be me, so I really needed to let him get back to finding someone who would be sleeping with him because I certainly wasn't in the right state of mind to be sleeping with anyone right now.
“So what’s the deal?” He threw back his drink, and his eyes landed on me.
I frowned.
“With Mad Maiden? I don’t mind copping a punch for when I’ve done something. You his woman now or something?” He glanced behind me.
I turned to see Maiden up against a wall with a beer talking to Grit. His jaw was clenched, and even though he was talking to Grit, I could swear he must have seen me.
I opened my mouth. How the hell did I answer that question? Well, I guess with the truth.
“No.”
“Sure.” Critter winked at me.
“We aren’t anything.” And that was the truth. At least, that was what I tried to convince myself.
Then my cheeks went red, and I jumped slightly when I felt Critter’s hand on my knee, slipping under my skirt. He leaned in, and his mouth went to my ear. “I give it a minute.”
I’d opened my mouth to say he was being stupid when his hand was ripped from my body.
“Touch her again, and you’ll fucking lose your hand,” Maiden said with a hiss, a burning rage unlike anything I had ever seen before filled his eyes.
How the hell did he get over here so quickly?
Critter put his hands up and excused himself. He gave me a wink and dared to say he’d see me later when my bodyguard wasn’t around.
“What the fuck do you see in him?” Maiden snapped at me.
He was acting like Critter and I were more than friends.
“He is nice,” I answered his question.
“So that’s what you like, is it, nice?” His words were slicing. “Guess I don’t make the cut.”
“Maiden—”
“You’re claimed, Emmie.” He placed cut over me as his eyes locked with mine with such passion. “You’re mine, and don’t fucking forget that.”
He glanced around the room, then wrapped an arm around me and pulled me to my feet before dragging me out of the crowded clubhouse.
The fresh air hit my face, and I thought he just wanted to talk in private until we were in the garage. As soon as the garage door shut, he locked it. I opened my mouth to ask what the hell he was doing, but he gripped me roughly and wrapped an arm around me. Wiping the table with his other hand, he sat me on it. I couldn’t help but think that was becoming his signature move.
His lips were on my neck, and I gasped, feeling his intense kiss. Then he continued, his tongue slowly and seductively licking and sucking, working his way up. I gasped when he nipped my ear.
“What are you, Emmie?”
“Insane,” I replied automatically, and he nipped at my jaw harshly for it.
“You’re fucking claimed woman. That was the answer.” He roughly gripped my face. “Now tell me by who.”
My heart was beating at an incredible rate, and I locked eyes with his. I saw his desire and need to hear it, and I knew that I might regret it, but I found myself about to say words I never thought I’d say.
“I’m yours.”
He growled at my response, and I wasn’t able to take any more of his teasing. Possession leaked through his expression, and I saw his built-up sexual frustration when his eyes saw my nipples standing out through my top.
“I really need to wear bras,” I muttered more to myself than to him.
“Like fuck you are. They’re mine, and I want to see them.” The frustration in his voice was so clear. So without thinking it through, my hand went down and brushed him, and a growl came from him. Then he turned into a beast, ripping my T-shirt into two, and the small decorative buttons at the top of the tee went flying in every direction. I then helped him pull my skirt up until it was around my waist.
Maiden lifted me down from the bench and spun me around, his hand slowly moving up my hips, over my stomach, and then cupping my breasts. A groan escaped his lips, and with force, he pulled me back into him, turning my head so his lips could claim mine. Maiden kissed me deeply, making me moan for more, but I could feel how hard he was against my back. He needed relief, and I couldn’t be a greedy lover. He had given me relief, and it was time I repaid the favor. My mind twisted with all the things we could do. Fucking seemed like what he needed, but I wanted to give to him without getting anything in return.
So with that in mind, I turned back around, and my hands went to his belt. I wasn’t the world’s best blow job giver, but I practiced what I knew, and I usually left the man wanting and needing more.
I was addicted to his touch, and I wanted him addicted to mine. I pushed him away slightly.
Disappointment and concern covered his face. He must have thought I was pushing him away until I undid his belt completely, and before he could react, my mouth was wrapped around him. His hands went to my hair, and by the time I finished, we would be one for one. I took all of him in my mouth, and he inhaled sharply.
“Emmie, sweetheart, you don’t have to—” His words were cut off when I picked up the speed.
I wasn’t going to stop until he finished in my mouth, and I knew he would protest, but I wasn’t going to let him pull out. I wanted him—all of him. I wanted to taste him.
He pulled out and then slowly started to move in my mouth, exhaling sharply as I sucked in rhythm to his pumps.
Removing him from my mouth, I said, “I want it deeper.”
When he didn’t automatically go deeper, I forced him to give me a mouthful, I took him deep into my throat. His hand wrapped my hair into a ponytail and pulled on it tightly. The deeper he went, the more enjoyment I got out of it because he was clearly forcing himself not to come.
I pulled back, and the need for sex filled his eyes.
“Don’t pull back out.”
“Nah, fuck that. I want to finish in you, and I don’t mean in your mouth.” He backed me to the couch, sitting me down and spreading my legs.
Placing my legs over his shoulders, he positioned himself.
“You’re mine, Emmeline Paxton.” With those words, he pumped into me, causing my body to tingle. As he picked up the speed, I couldn’t stop the gasps coming from my mouth.
We didn’t make love, and we didn’t have sex. We fucked, and it was perfect.
I woke up in Maiden’s arms after sleeping in the back of a car in the garage. It was his current project on top of fixing his bike at the moment.
After we had sex, I didn’t want to go back inside and pretend like it hadn’t happened. It seemed he wanted the same, so he guided me into the back of the car, and I fell asleep lying half on top and half beside him with his hard chest against my back.
I didn’t remember the last time I had slept so perfectly. No nightmares. No terrors. No voices. Just bliss. Was this what it was like to be normal? I couldn’t help but wonder because this was the first time I had really experienced it.
Maiden’s fingers drew circles on my hip, so I knew he was awake, he just didn’t know I was.
So I cleared my throat. “Maiden, about last night…”
“If you say forget about it, I’ll fuck you again right now so you can’t wipe it from your mind.”
I turned on the backseat to face him. We were so close I could feel his breathing. I traced his jaw.
“I loved it,” I spoke the honest truth. “But it doesn’t have to mean anything else,” I said tightly. “You don’t have to claim me as yours.”
I felt his jaw tighten underneath my finger.
“You’re mine, Emmie.” His words were tight and gave me no room to interject. With his hand on my back, he pulled me tighter against his chest. “I’m telling your old man about us. Ain’t fucking sneaking around behind everyone’s back.” Maiden was one of the men who was upfront, and
what you saw was what you got.
“You’ll end up with a bloody shirt,” I whispered against his chest. And maybe some broken bones I wanted to add.
“I’ll take it.” He lifted my chin up. “I’d take a hell of a lot more to be with you, Emmie.”
A soft smile spread across my cheeks. For the first time in a long time, I felt like a normal girl who had the potential to be loved for who I was.
My mind raced with thoughts, the kind of thoughts not friendly to me, and the kind that usually sparked the voices. Since hearing Dad was going to prison, things were getting worse for me mentally.
I didn’t know how I was going to manage without him, but I also knew that I had to be an adult and this was a perfect opportunity to do it. I wanted so badly to leave the MC world behind because I didn’t know how I would feel waking up every morning to a club that my dad was no longer in.
Until last night, Dad was the reason I kept the MC in my life. Now, I had a new reason to keep it in my life—Maiden. If it were possible for a man to own a woman, Maiden had made it clear he owned me.
And the scary thing was I didn’t mind about it.
I walked downstairs and heard Maiden and Dad’s voices.
“Well, if it isn’t my number one girl.”
I smiled at Dad’s greeting, but we both knew that there were two number one girls for him, the other being my cousin Libby.
“You interested in a day trip?” Dad asked, and I frowned.
“Heading outta town to pick up some new bike parts,” Maiden added. “Wanna come for a drive, sweetheart?”
Dad didn’t jump down Maiden’s throat hearing Maiden call me sweetheart. No, instead, he seemed fine with it, which made me raise an eyebrow at the two of them, confusion written all over my face.
Before I could respond, Dad spoke up. “She’s goin’, and that’s settled. I’ve got a call to make. Look after her, Maiden.”
I couldn’t believe it had gone down that smoothly, especially after Grit discovered Maiden and I barely dressed last week. Not to mention, I was positive he saw us walking out of the garage with me wearing Maiden’s top because mine was ruined.
Maiden watched Dad leave, slowly moving toward me, and when Dad was gone, his hands went to my hips.
“You need anything, or can we head out?” His lips went to my ear, and he kissed my cheek as he gripped my hips and pulled me in. “About last night, you…” He inhaled sharply, then shook his head and changed his tone. “You’re mine now, Emmie”—his lips went back to my ear—“in the fuckin’ bedroom and out of it.”
Our gazes locked, and I knew it took a lot for him to say that considering his history.
The thing most people didn’t know about Maiden was he was involved with a lot of street gangs before he was traded to the MC for a debt. The tattoos over his body openly showed his street gang life, and their symbol was tattooed next to his right eye.
He didn’t hide his history, but I recalled a story Dad told me about him when I was younger, and Maiden first came to the club. Dad told me to keep my distance from him because he had experienced mental health issues with his girlfriend who, in the end, took her life.
Maiden had kept his distance from me, but then one day, he just started talking to me and told me not to hide from him. Since then, we’ve had an honest and trustworthy friendship. As he softly kissed my lips, I wondered if perhaps it was going to be more than a friendship since he was now calling me his.
My stomach bubbled with nerves.
Looking out the window, I stared into the man’s eyes. The eyes that never left me alone and were always around when I least expected it, but they’d never been in daylight. I didn’t think I’d ever held a conversation with him, but with him keeping half his face hidden, I couldn’t be sure.
Why me? Why did I have to not only hear voices but now see things? I would have to bring it up with my psychiatrist at the next visit. I wouldn’t accept I was now seeing hallucinations.
I hadn’t spoken with Dad since our…confrontation. So I was hovering at his office door now, away from the man’s eyes. The door was cracked open slightly, which had me confused. Dad never forgot to make sure the door was shut. He didn't want people hearing things they shouldn’t hear, which caused my steps to falter then stop completely when I heard my name mentioned. I was surprised hearing Maiden’s voice as well, not understanding why the two of them would be talking about me.
Unless… Fuck! Was Maiden telling him about us?
“Thanks for looking after Emmie. I know it isn’t easy on you to be around her,” Dad said.
“Gotta do what has to be done, Prez. You gave me a job, and I did it. Now it’s done,” Maiden replied.
Tears sprang to my eyes.
“Didn’t trust another member to look after her. Sorry, you had to spend so much time while we tracked the bastard down. Grit and Lynx caught the stalker with Libby, but he got away again.”
“Does Emmie have a clue that it’s real?” Maiden asked.
“No, and I don’t want to alarm her until we catch the bastard,” Dad replied.
I slapped my hand over my mouth, muffling the gasp that threatened to escape my lips.
“It will spark her, Maiden. If she knows this man is stalking her, it will send her off. We can’t have that.”
“So letting her walk around thinking she sees shit is better?” Maiden didn’t contain the anger in his tone. “I can’t keep lying to her and forcing myself to spend time with her.”
My eyes clenched shut as silent tears ran down my cheeks. His words, forcing myself to spend time with her, repeated in my mind.
What did you expect, Emmeline? He hates you just like everyone. No one loves you. No one needs you. No one will notice if you leave. Leave, Emmeline, leave everyone. They want you gone. You are nothing but a burden. They all lie to you.
The voices got louder, crippling me as I gripped the wall. I couldn’t fucking move they were so loud. The tears got heavier, and slowly, I found my feet moving, but it wasn’t back to my bedroom or to confront my father for lying to me. No. I was doing what they, the voices, wanted.
I was leaving. It was time to leave. They were right. I was nothing but a burden. So I walked, numbed by the creeping psychosis I was entering and the mental torture I was currently under, which destroyed my connection with reality. My psychosis heightened, and when I walked outside, my connection to reality completely disconnected, and I gave up fighting them. I let them take control and finally acted on what they were telling me.
I was learning the hard way that trusting someone, or anyone for that matter, was the hardest thing to do. I wasn’t going to lie and say I hadn’t trusted Maiden because I had. I had put all my trust in him, and the result was, well, here I was, hot-wiring a car in the middle of the night.
I was so sick of people putting me down due to my illness. Fuck them. Fuck the lot of them. The two wires sparked, which was to be expected considering it was the oldest car in the lot because I couldn’t bring myself to steal a car that was actually needed.
A throat cleared behind me, causing me to jump.
“What the fuck, Critter!” My hand went to my heart. God, what was his deal? “Sneaking up on people is not okay!”
“Well, first off, it isn’t people, it’s you, and second of all, I think your dad would be thankin’ me.” He inhaled on his cigarette. “Start explaining, Emmeline.” He said my name in a singsong way.
“I’m leaving,” I said firmly, which caused him to arch his eyebrows at me. “And you can’t stop me.”
I was getting out of this MC tonight, no matter what it resulted in. I was leaving.
“You’re right.” He smirked. “I’m not gonna stop you.” He then opened the door wider. “I’m gonna help.”
My expression twisted. “Why?”
“I’m bored.” He shrugged like it was the most obvious answer. “And I want to piss Maiden off. Plus”—he leaned in—“I can see we have chemistry, so let’s see where i
t takes us.” He grinned and wiggled his eyebrows suggestively.
As long as it was far away from here, I honestly didn’t care, so nodding my head, I scooted to the passenger seat. To my surprise, Critter got the car running right away with just a tweak of the wires.
So now it was happening, the revolution was finally was happening, and I was leaving the MC life for the first time in my life. I inhaled sharply. Could I do this? Could I really turn my back on the MC life?
As Critter drove the car out of the lot, I couldn’t stop myself looking from over my shoulder at the only home I had known.
“So where we heading, Em?”
I felt like I was losing my mind. What the hell was I doing? “Go back!” I shouted.
Critter jumped on the brakes.
“What the fuck, Emmie? What’s wrong? We haven’t even made it out of the gates.”
My hands trembled. God, how was I going to make it without my support? I blinked back tears, and my head snapped up when I felt Critter’s hand on my knee.
“Come on, Em, tell me what’s going on.” His voice held a lot of understanding as if he had been in this situation before. “This isn’t like you, is it? Hot-wiring a car, which I’m now guessing isn’t just to get to a bar?”
I blinked, he honestly thought I was just hot-wiring a car to get to a bar or nightclub? Seriously? If I wanted a drink, I could have helped myself to the bar.
I now realized like when it came to everything in my life I would be giving up before letting something begin. Fuck this. Fuck second-guessing.
My gaze locked with Critter’s, and I realized nothing was going to put this fire out within inside me. I was finally ready to be a real adult.
“Can you take me to the family estate?” I asked, and he smiled.
“Your cousin is heading there too.”
I grinned. “Perfect.” I wanted to see her. This was going to be great, and it made me feel more comfortable knowing my cousin would be there when I arrived.
