Once the hole was several feet deep the figure climbed out. Picking up a heavy object, wrapped in a white cloth stitched with magical runic symbols, the figure unceremoniously dumped it into the newly dug hole. After several minutes the object was buried under a tonne of dirt and rock. Satisfied it would not be found any time soon, the figure knelt on the sand, unmindful of his robes getting any dirtier.
“I’m sorry. May the Spirits of your ancestors forgive me.” The words were barely a whisper, and in the light of the moon several teardrops fell to the ground, quickly evaporating by the heat still trapped underneath. For several minutes the lone figure stayed in that position before he rose and walked away into the darkness.
A short time later another figure appeared from the opposite direction. Haloed in bluish-white light the young woman approached on feet that made no disturbance in the sand. Her long silver hair blowing gently behind by a wind that was not of the physical world. She stopped at the place which had been recently filled and considered the buried object left behind. She felt a great darkness confined within the white magically enchanted shroud, and realised this evil had partly been responsible for her death. Glancing aside she acknowledged the large wolf that had silently padded up to her side. “He came back as promised, Shima. Guard this place, the buried darkness must never be found.”
The grey wolf, whose fur had once shone silver like the young woman’s hair, could only look up her and silently agree.
