Gay Before God: An Awakening Love Forbidden by the Church

by William Bruce

  “What is it?”

“It is a letter from Terry. He wrote it to explain everything. Victor passed it to me and said you should have it.”

“Thank you, Charles,” said James taking it reverently in his hand. The mud from the grave quickly soiled the envelope.

“Anyway, I must get back to the pub before the family eat all the sandwiches.” Charles was already walking away. “See you later.”

James knew there would be no ‘later’ and there was something very final in their parting. But James had a letter. He could not bear to open it now, not in this place, with the fear of others intruding. He would take it home and open it slowly and deliberately absorb every word. He so hoped it would be the vindication of everything that had happened. The proof, which now he desperately needed, Terry did love him above all others, and what they experienced was of eternal value. It would sustain him in the unknown future ahead of him, perhaps help him rebuild his life. He had given away the stones but had got something in return. He carefully put the envelope into his pocket and walked with a new found naive confidence towards the church gate.
