  Chapter 1.

I hold the vampire’s life in the palm of my hand. My grip tightens and a gurgling sound comes from his throat. I should care that my humanity is slipping. I should feel something… anything. All I feel is cold determination. He is the reason we have been taking in so many fledglings. He turns them without care that he is changing their lives irrevocably. He doesn’t care the slimmest bit that he destroys the futures they had planned. He is a selfish beast and I am his judge, jury, and executioner.

“Tell me why and I will make it quick.” I loosen my grip slightly yet he says nothing so I tighten my grip again until I feel the bones rubbing together in his neck.

“Talk, now!” I growl as I loosen my grip again. We interrupted him trying to turn a woman. She lays a few feet away and it just fuels my rage. Gabriel taps my shoulder reminding me that he’s here with me.

“He is thinking of a doctor.” Gabriel says as he turns toward the vampire. He bares his fangs menacingly at him.

“Who is the doctor?” He asks the scum. He growls like a wounded animal cornered.

“The doctor is his Uncle from his mortal life. He has made it his life’s work to study us. This shit has been helping him by creating new vampires and leaving them to be captured by his men. Only problem is that we have found many of them before his Uncle could.” Gabriel growls the last bit in the vampire’s face.

“Just kill me and get it over with.” He spits out at us. A moan sounds from the ground and for a moment I could swear my heart beat. Impossible. I shake my head. It must be the stress of the last few days.

“What’s happening?” A small voice says from a few feet away and my heart starts beating. I press my hand over it as the vampire in front of me gasps. Gabriel grabs the vampire because my concentration is now centered completely on the woman, slowly climbing to her feet. The air shifts and I get my first scent of her. I groan as I feel my cock harden for the first time in nearly a millennium. My fangs lengthen and for the first time in my life, I have no idea of what to do.

She stands up and my eyes track her every movement. She is breathtakingly beautiful. Her long black hair swings around her shoulders down to her tapered waist but what holds me spell bound is her eyes. They are the brightest green without a fleck of gold or blue in them. They are like shimmering emeralds that are fit for a king. She presses her hand against her neck where blood still flows slightly. I didn’t think to close the wound before attacking the vampire. I curse myself as I make my way over to her.

“Don’t be afraid. I will never hurt you but I would like to help stop the bleeding.” I can barely say, though, slightly garbled by my fangs. She noticed their distension and freezes in place.

“You’re like him.” She shakes her head and starts backing away from me.

“I am nothing like him. I have never harmed a woman, nor will I ever.” I hold my hands up to show her that I am harmless. I wish my fangs would retract but apparently, they have a mind of their own where she’s concerned. I can smell her sweet blood and it calls to me like a sirens song.

“How would you help stop the bleeding?” She asks with a worried expression as she continues to put pressure on the wound.

“My saliva will close the wound and heal it instantly.” I tell her as I move closer. She is understandably weary and I do not want to frighten her any more than she already is.

“O…o..kay.” She stutters out and I step in front of her. She slowly moves her hand away and tilts her head to the side. I lean in and breathe in the most fragrant and delicious smelling blood that has ever existed. It was created just for me. To clench my thirst but also to entice me and soothe me. It does all those things and more. It arouses me in a way that should be illegal because the thoughts in my head are outrageous. I want to turn her around, lift her dress, push her panties aside and thrust into her. I want to ride her body hard, against this very wall.

I give my head a small shake as I lean down further and let my tongue swipe through the most decadent of flavors. It explodes on my tongue and gives me the energy that six bags of blood could never do. It is very true that a mate’s blood is the equivalent of human drink with steroids and vitamins in it. I feel strength I didn’t know I had, zing through my body. I lick up every drop of blood I can find on her slender neck. It amps up my arousal ten-fold. The wound is completely gone when I finally pull away.

I look down to see the most glorious sight I have ever seen. Her eyes are heavy laden and her cheeks are flushed with color. I sniff the air and smell the blossoming fragrance of her arousal and I groan at how much I want to taste it too.

“Mine.” I growl as I quickly lift her over my shoulder and start running toward the room we rented for the night. I know that I am probably frightening her but I can’t seem to help it. The thought of the others smelling her desire makes me want to rip out their throats for daring. It seems all rational thought has vacated my mind. I want her to myself. I trust Gabriel to finish getting what we need from the man who attacked my mate. I growl as I think about going back and finishing him off. The only thing stopping me is the knowledge that others were involved and we need to stop them all.

She starts trying to get away from me, that won’t be happening. I could no more let her go than to remove my arm. She is as necessary as the blood that nourishes me. Not only because I need her blood to survive now but also because I need her in the most visceral, most animalistic ways imaginable. It’s not just sexual either. I want to know all there is to know about her. I want all her smiles, her happiness and most of all, her love. I need her love to shine down on me and obliterate the darkness and numbness that has taken me over recently. I had given up hope and wallowed in revenge.

; “Put me down.” She hits my back though it doesn’t even faze me.

“Don’t worry. I will never hurt you.” I try to rub her soothingly but all it does is make my hormones go on a frenzy when I feel the bare flesh of her legs under my hand. Her skin is so soft. It’s like touching the petals of a flower. I start running faster so that I can avoid people seeing me carrying a woman and report me to the human authorities. I’m not sure I can be sane with other men around my mate. I need to get her to the privacy of my room.

I zip through the lobby so quickly that human eyes can’t track me and before I know it, I’m standing in front of my door. I slide the card through and when the green light flashes I turn the handle. I throw the door open and rush through. As soon as the door clicks shut, I let her slide down my body, enjoying the feel of her curves against me. I always thought that when I found my mate, if I found my mate, she would be a large imposing woman. I have never been happier to be wrong. My mate is very slight. She can’t be much taller than five foot and she is thin though her curves are visible. Her waist is so tiny that I wonder if I can wrap my hands around it completely. Her hips flare out and she has a rounded ass above her long thin legs. Her legs seem so long, even on her short frame.

My mate is truly spectacular. Her hair is longer than mine, reaching the top of her bottom. She makes me want to equal parts ravish her and protect her. It’s a feeling I have never had before. The love I instantly feel for her completely eclipses the love I thought I had for the mother of my child and the prostitute I once begged the fates to be mine. I never thought I would see the day that I would be thankful that Mary had not been my mate, well today is that day.

“Please don’t hurt me.” She says as she backs away from me. The fear in her eyes is like a much needed, splash of cold water. I hate seeing that look from her.

“I would never harm you. I have told you that and yet you still don’t believe me.” I huff indignantly at her though I understand her mistrust. She was just attacked for god’s sake and then I carry her off like some beast.

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking clearly. Really, you can trust me.” I tell her. She finally looks around at her surroundings.

“You’re going to rape me?” She says staring at the large king sized bed dominating the room. I let out a frustrated breath.

“That would hurt you and haven’t I already promised not to do that.” Her eyes narrow at me. I see the fire in her now. My petite beauty has fire. I love that sparkle I see in her eyes as she puts her hands on her hips and stares me down.

“Then why did you take me? You are a vampire like that man who attacked me and yet you expect me to trust you.” She practically growls at me and my cock leaks a little, wanting to thrust into her tiny body. I bet it will be a tight fit. I bet all that fire can be turned to passion that will burn the bed around us. I groan as I wipe a hand across my face to take those thoughts away before I act upon them.

“Please sit down and I will explain as best I can.” She glares at me for a moment before finally deciding it’s best to just listen to what I need to say. She has already seen what I am so it’s not going to be as difficult to explain. I just hope she gives me a chance to prove to her that I can be a good mate to her. I’m not a beast who preys upon women. I think once she sees that she will give me a chance. I hope.

  Chapter 2.

This night has been the craziest I have ever experienced and I went to college. The only difference is, this is all mythical creatures and scary fangs, instead of drunken frat boys. I did mace a few but for some reason I think my can of mace would have little effect on these guys. I reach up and touch my neck where that vampire had fed on me. I whimper and William growls.

“I should go back and rip his throat out for touching my mate.” He says and I shudder at the venom I hear in his voice. He means to do just that. He would kill that man for hurting me. For some unknown reason, it makes me relax a little. He obviously doesn’t like harm done to me. Little does he know, I am already dying. I only have months left to live. I have had a rare form of Leukemia since I was in high school. It would go into remission, only to come back a year later. This last time it was only four months.

I never let it slow me down. I went to college and started my career as a school teacher. I loved teaching my first graders. Children are such a joy. They speak their mind, completely unfiltered. It’s refreshing after being with adults that lie all the time. Sure, they are normally small little white lies but they are lies all the same. I always hoped to have children of my own someday but that is obviously not in the cards for me. Even if I was to live, the radiation and chemo have destroyed my reproduction system. I shake myself away from those thoughts. No sense in dwelling on them.

“Please sit down, you’re making me dizzy.” I tell William. His constant movements make the world spin just a little. I know it has more to do with my condition than it does his movements, though, the speed in which he moves might not help. He sits down beside me and it’s the first time I do not flinch away from him. He smiles because he must have noticed it too. I take a deep breath. He smells so good, there is a hint of cologne but it’s the underlying scent that draws my attention.

“Well, let me start by formally introducing myself. My name is William Lacey.” He puts his hand out and I take it. His hand is surprisingly warm compared to the vampire that attacked me.

“My name is Hailey Curran.” I tell him and he smiles at me again. His sharp features soften when he smiles and I find myself leaning toward him before I can stop myself. Damn it. What the hell is the matter with me? It’s like I have a death wish or something. I feel an attraction for him that goes well beyond what is natural. I never thought I would be attracted to someone that I fear. Though, to be fair he would have already attacked me if that is what he wanted to do. He hasn’t and that is what is keeping me calm at this point.

“Hailey, most vampires these days’ drink bagged blood. There are a few that still drink from a donor but only a little here and there, never enough to kill them. The man who attacked you is working for humans for some reason. I’m sure we will learn more about it soon.” He says my name as though he’s rolling it around on his tongue and enjoying the flavor of it. My nipples pebble at the sound of my name on his lips. This is beyond a typical attraction.

“We have our own council that will be judging the man who attacked you.” He tells me and then mumbles.

“If I let him live.” He says barely above a whisper. He seems to be protective of me and I am still unsure why. I nearly snicker at him so I bite my lip to prevent it.

“Vampires only have one mate in their lifetime. A mate will make their heartbeat again and they will feel sexual desire again.” He takes a deep breath and looks over at me to make sure I am still listening.

“When a vampire is changed he or she will no longer feel any kind of sexual desire until they meet their mate. It’s why a vampire’s mate is the most important thing in the world. A mate will be protected above all others.” He looks at me intently and my heart stutters in my chest.

“Your friend said I was your mate. Is that true?” I ask him, though, I already know the answer to that question.

  “Yes.” He says hoarsely.

“What does that mean for me?” I ask as my heart starts racing within my chest and I feel slightly light headed. The poor guy has been ripped off, since I do not have long to live.

“It means that I can no longer exist without you. I will need to feed from you and you only. I will no longer be able to stomach any other blood.” I look away from him sadly. I have cursed him to a short life then.

“I’m so sorry William. I don’t have long to live.” Tears fill my eyes. He kneels in front of me and tips my head back with a finger.

“I’m not sure how this works because the only mated couple I knew, before the recent couples, died. We are still trying to figure things out. Just say you’ll spend time with me and get to know me.” He says as he leans in and for som
e reason I want to get to know him as well. What do I have to lose, I’m dying anyway. If he can save me then he will. Though, I’m not sure I like the idea of becoming a vampire.

“Promise me you won’t change me unless I give you permission.” I tell him. He frowns and stares into my eyes.

“Please don’t ask me to promise that. I can’t live without you.” He says. I feel the tears slip from my eyes and down my cheeks.

“Just ask me first. I’m not saying that I will say no. I just want to know what is happening to me.” He frowns as he thinks it over for a moment.

“Alright I promise to ask you before changing you.” He cups my cheek and I find myself nuzzling his hand. What is the matter with me? Didn’t my mom teach me not to play with vampires? I look deeply into his crystal blue eyes and I feel like I am staring into a window. I see his inner beauty shining through along with desire so strong that it takes my breath away. He really does mean what he’s saying. I can see it all here in the depths of his eyes as though they are mirrors into his soul.

I blink my eyes and it’s gone, as if it had never been there. I lean forward and stare into his eyes again, trying to recreate it but it doesn’t happen again. All I see is his stunning light blue eyes. His long almost silver, blonde hair falls into his eyes and I automatically reach out and tuck it behind his ear. Some current runs through me as my flesh touches his ear, it’s the same as it had been earlier only it seems to be gaining in intensity. Already it’s causing a throbbing between my legs and my breathing to accelerate.

“My love, if you keep leaning into me like that I will think you want me to kiss you.” He says and I am so tempted to let him, which is insane. He’s a vampire and I do not make a habit of kissing men I have only just met. I back away from him, but wince as the pain in my back from the fall in the alley, makes itself known. I must have fainted and landed on it wrong. William sees me and his jaw tightens just before he races from the room.
