The Final Note (DJ Series Book 1)

An hour and a half later we are dismissed for break and Clary and I are in the café on the ground floor.
“So, have you got a boyfriend or partner, Jess?” Clary asks while licking the muffin crumbs off her fingers. I shake my head.
“No, I'm a single mum. I broke up with the kids’ dad a year ago,” I explain and I see surprise on Clarissa's face.
“Really, what do you have, a boy or a girl? How old?” she seems genuinely interested.
“Both. My daughter, Holly, is five, and my son, Riley, is just three. I'm in my early thirties if you're wondering.” I chuckle and she waves away my age but is smiling.
“I would love kids. I've always wanted one of each but my boyfriend, Pete, says he never wants children. I’m pretty sure he would kick me out if I ever got caught pregnant.” She looks disheartened and I hope for her sake she doesn’t accidently get caught.
I check my watch, seeing we ought to be making our way back up to 4A, I slide my chair out from the table and Clary takes no prompting to follow my lead. We chat all the way back to the classroom and we're the first ones to line up. I lean against the wall next to the door, laughing at a comment Clary made about piercing condoms with a safety pin.
“So, not looking for Mr. Right then?” she asks and I think for a minute before shrugging.
“Not actively. Not to say I wouldn't enjoy a fling with Mr. Right Now, just to warm my bed for the night.” I giggle.
“Well, winter is creeping in, you need something to warm your bed and a hot water bottle isn't quite as exciting as Mr. Right Now. Shame we’re in puberty central here, you won't find a fit guy over nineteen. You never know, you might bump into a hot science professor or something?” she jests and I laugh out loud.
“More like Einstein's mini me, knowing my luck. I'm sure I'll be investing in a new hot water bottle this winter.” I laugh as the bell rings loudly through the corridor.
I hadn’t noticed that the other students had slowly filtered in and joined the line with us. “Although, I can't write everybody off, there was a seriously hot guy parked next to me in the car park this morning. I wouldn't mind studying with him in the back of his sporty Civic Type R.” I grin and hear the door being opened behind me.
“Well, maybe your parking paths will cross again at some point, we are going to be learning here for a full year.” Clary nudges me and I snort in response.
“Guys like him aren't into women like me, Clary.” I assure her, rolling my eyes as I turn to go into our first lesson... and I come face to face with the most intense blue eyes I have ever seen in my life- again!
