Untangled (The Monroe Family Book 7) Page 23

by Nicole Dykes

“What’s going on?” I ask as I pull on a shirt and grab my keys.

Alex quickly dresses as she explains, “Michael was in a car accident. He’s in the hospital.”

  “Fuck!”

She nods her head, agreeing with my response as we fly out of the new loft we bought last month. It’s a little bigger than the one she was renting, and this one we own together.

When we get to the hospital Brooke, Dylan, Gabs and Sylvie are all sitting in the large waiting room. Luke is pacing around like a madman, and Hannah appears to be trying to comfort him.

We rush over to Brooke and Dylan, and Brooke jumps up wrapping her arms around Alex's neck, sobbing on her shoulder.

I can hear Alex telling her it will be okay. Dylan stands up to greet us.

“Where is he?” I ask him, and Brooke straightens up, wiping her face. My heart hurts for her. As far as she’s concerned, she's Michael’s second mom. He’s her kid, and she must be dying inside right now.

“Surgery. They didn’t tell us much, other than he was with a girl and they wrecked out on some old two-lane highway. They are both alive, but it’s bad,” Dylan says.

Brooke glares at me. “I knew him racing was a terrible idea.”

“Brooke, it has nothing to do with racing,” Dylan says calmly.

“Bullshit. You think he wasn’t racing? Trying to see how fast he could go on that abandoned road?” she says. I know she’s just grieving and worried right now, but it still gnaws at me that if Michael doesn’t make it, this is on me.

Brooke sits back down in a chair next to Alex with Sylvie on her lap, and a moment later Jax and Charlotte rush in. When they reach us, Jax asks, “What the fuck happened?”

Dylan fills him in and then we wait.

Several hours later, Cam, Van, Dani, Hunter, and Cass have joined us, and the doctor finally comes out to update us.

“Michael was in a serious accident. Apparently, he and the girl he was with were thrown from the car. Frankly, it’s a miracle he survived. He has scrapes and cuts from the road and several broken bones, but luckily no head trauma.” We all breathe a collective sigh of relief on that one. “It is going to take a significant amount of work for him to heal though.”

This feels eerily familiar of when I wrecked my dirt bike.

The doctor goes on to explain the amount of surgeries and physical therapy he will need.

Yup. This is similar all right.

My mind immediately goes to the only person I trust to help in this situation, and when the doctor finishes, I excuse myself, walking outside.

I dial Amy’s number and she picks up on the third ring. “Shriller? Please tell me your dumb ass didn’t get into another wreck.”

“Amy, I need your help,” I say in a serious tone.

Her original joking mood is gone as she says, “Anything.”

The story continues in Chris and Amy’s book, coming soon!
