Amy palmed her face. “Heather, that’s ridiculous.”

  “What? Why?”

“You can’t blame yourself for a crazy guy’s actions. And you certainly can’t blame yourself for the death of a, let’s face it, really horrible woman,” Amy said.

  “That’s not the point –”

“You’re right,” Amy said, and waved her arm, ensconced in its puffy sleeve. “The point is you solved a murder case, and you brought justice to the killer. You gave the Fordyce family peace of mind. Anything after that wasn’t your responsibility.”

“But I didn’t do it the right way,” Heather said.

“Yeah, but you didn’t know any other way. Now, you do. You don’t make the same mistakes twice, Heather, and that says something about you as a person,” Amy said. “Although, that’s not true. You did wear white cowboy boots on two separate occasions.”

“Don’t make me slap you,” Heather said, and raised a finger, but the doubt and shame in her mind had abated a little.

Maybe Ames was right. She’d done her best in the past. She’d made mistakes, yeah, but could she truly blame herself for them?

“It’s funny,” Heather said and turned back to Ryan and her gorgeous eleven-year-old daughter. “Eva mentioned something at the beginning of the week that was similar.”

“Oh yeah?” Amy asked. “What did she say?”

“I said that one bad week couldn't dictate the direction of your life.” Eva strolled up the garden path, a pie tin clasped in her gnarled hands. She winked at Heather. “Only you can, dear.”

  “Eva!” Lilly called out.

Dave barked from the front porch. Cupcake meowed from behind the living room window where she’d been imprisoned – she had a knack for twisting the strings of lights.

Lilly hurried to the old woman and hugged her tight. “What do you think?”

Eva turned her gaze to the work in progress. “It’s perfect, dear. Everything is perfect.”

  Heather smiled.

  Everything was perfect.
