Club Abbott: Pretend You're Mine (Club Abbott Series #1) Page 11

by Hazel Kelly

  “It’s really no problem.”

“I don’t have my card either.”

I furrowed my brow. “When was the last time you saw it?”

She scrunched her face. “Last night at Nomu when I opened a tab.”

  “Uh-oh.”

  “Yeah, that explains a lot.”

  “It’s fine.”

She sighed. “I’ll just have to pay you back on Friday if that’s-”

I put a finger under her chin and tilted it up.

Her big eyes were full of questions as they bounced between mine.

I pushed a stray wisp of blonde hair to the side of her face.

Then I leaned down and pressed my lips against hers as softly as I could. When she didn’t pull away, I parted her lips with mine and slipped my tongue in her mouth, kissing her slowly and cautiously- more like an invitation than an order.

When she kissed me back, I slid my hands around to her lower back and pulled her against me, swirling her tongue in my mouth.

Finally, I let my hands drift down over her ass, holding it just tight enough to appreciate its shape.

When she pulled away it was only a few inches. “What was that about?”

“Your ex,” I said. “He was coming this way.”

Her eyes were so open and trusting I almost felt bad about the lie. “And now?” she asked.

  “He’s gone.”

She brought her fingers to her lips and looked at me.

“Sorry if I overstepped the mark there-”

“It’s okay,” she said. “You were only doing what I asked.”

“I’m glad you found my acting convincing.”

She squinted at me and took a step back.

“Though I only had to pretend about us being together.”

  “What do you mean?”

  I shrugged. “I didn’t have to pretend you’re beautiful.”

  She swallowed.

“Have a fun girl’s night anyway.”

  “What?”

I nodded towards the groceries at her feet.

  “Oh, right.”

  “See you Friday.”

“Sounds good,” she said, picking up her bags.

  I turned to walk away.

  “And Ben?”

I looked back over my shoulder and raised my eyebrows. “Yeah?”

“From now on we’ll resume our professional working relationship.”

  “Of course.”

  “Not that that wasn’t-”

  “What?”

“Nothing,” she said. “See you Friday.”

  “Looking forward to it.”

“And thanks again for what you did in there and… just then.”

  “Anytime,” I said.

As long as it was soon.
