Kyra touched his hand on the table. She took it in hers and stared at it. It was perfect and warm. She wished to experience his touch against her cheek. Her thoughts drifted to his arms. How would it feel to be next to him, with his arms around her and his mouth on hers? Was that attraction or love at first sight? Was she actually wishing to end the date with something more than a goodbye? At the cinema, she could get closer to him in the dark. That thought pleased her.
“Do they have popcorn at the theater?” she asked almost out of breath by her unusual thoughts.
“I hope so,” he whispered as his hand caressed hers.
He lifted her hand to his lips, inhaling her sweet perfume.
Kyra felt the ground disappear under her feet and all her skin shivered and burned. She actually closed her eyes and swallowed hard, nervous and aroused by his touch. She had never reacted that intensely to a guy before.
“Kyra…we shouldn’t be this close,” Sam whispered.
Before he could elaborate, a terrible noise was heard. With her closed eyes Kyra didn’t see how the top roof seemed to be pulled away by some invisible and powerful force. Everybody screamed in terror while pieces of concrete and tables flew all around them as if a hurricane was passing by and tearing everything apart.
Sam only had time to pull her against him to protect her from the concrete blocks and pieces of wood that were flying around. He hid under the table, hugging her close to him.
Forks, knives, plates, and wood flew around the restaurant, hurting people who continued to scream. The windows exploded. Pieces of glass embedded into bodies of the humans, hurting them badly and killing some of them instantly.
“What is going on?” Kyra asked, scared by the screams and the explosions. She was holding on to Sam, too frightened to look.
“Just trust me,” he told her. He cupped her face and stared into her eyes that had opened up to his. “Don’t try to leave my side and we’ll be okay.”
“Okay!” Kyra hid her face against his chest and fisted her hands on his t-shirt that smelled incredibly good.
She was going to die in his arms. She was sure about it because of the horrible noises that didn’t stop. The sound of the explosions was getting near. The horrifying screams of injured and dying people weren’t stopping either. Her life was over now that she had found the perfect man. It was ironic and cruel. Even though Sam was trying to reassure her, she knew only a miracle could save them.
Sam was waiting for an opportunity to make a run for the stairs. They had to get to the street where his motorcycle awaited them. He couldn’t fly. Humans couldn’t see his wings, but the invisible creatures attacking would spot them immediately. The monsters would target them with their flames and claws. The reason behind the attack was to capture Kyra and take her to their evil master. Everything would be lost if that happened. His greatest fears were becoming real. They needed to get to a safer place.
Kyra felt when Sam took her in his arms and ran. He was carrying her down the stairs, but she knew they were many stories above. The stairs would feel never ending, and he would eventually get tired if he continued to carry her. She wasn’t that heavy, but he wasn’t superman either.
“Where are we going?” she asked, opening her eyes and watching the flights of stairs being left behind as if he had jumped between floors. Her stomach dropped, and her heart raced even more. She muffled a scream against his shoulder. Shutting her eyes, she tried to stop the dizziness and control the fear.
“Somewhere safe. You don’t need to be afraid, I’ll take care of you,” he answered as if nothing was amiss. “You’ll have to run as fast as you can when I say so. Do you think you’ll be able to do that?”
“Run from what?” Her face stayed hidden against his neck when an explosion was heard somewhere above them. “What’s happening? Why does everything keeps exploding around us?”
“Just run, please,” he urged her when her feet touched the floor.
Kyra opened her eyes and focused on where she was. They were no longer on the top floor. They had somehow reached the ground floor.
“Kyra, run,” Sam ordered, offering her his hand.
She gripped it, and he pulled her which made her legs move. She tried to coax her brain to cope with the danger they were in but was unable to. All of it felt like a dream as Kyra ran behind Sam, being dragged through the hall where other people were running too.
A door flew off the hinges not far from them as an elevator crashed against the floor. This made the ground tremble. Abruptly, the front glass doors exploded before Kyra’s eyes. Samuel grabbed her by the waist, raised her feet from the ground, and used his body to protect her from the shattering glass. She screamed, held her arms around Sam’s neck and closed her eyes.
“What’s happening?” she asked, whimpering and trembling. She had never felt so helpless in her life.
“We need to get out of this building. Can you keep running?”
“Are you hurt?” she inquired as her feet landed on the ground.
His hand caressed her hair away from her face. He had concerned eyes and seemed extremely determined to protect her and get them to safety.
“We can’t rest or talk. I need you to run,” he said.
Turning around, he pulled her with him and searched for the way out. They ran carefully over the shattered glass, following the other people who were trying to get away from the explosions.
“Where are we going?” she asked when they exited the building.
Her lungs burned as she glanced back at the tall building that shone with random fires. It appeared as if it was being attacked by powerful bombs. She could hear the sirens as they approached the destruction. The police and the firemen had come to save the remainder of the people inside and the hurt who were outside. But Sam kept running. Her stomach hurt and her legs began to feel heavier the longer they ran.
It was cold outside. They had left without bringing her coat, purse, and cellphone. She was wearing only the sleeveless dress. The cold was pummeling her skin and, before she could protest, they stopped next to a dark alley. Gasping, she leaned down and tried to catch her breath. But the cold air hit her lungs. All she could do was cough.
Sam took her by her shoulders and straightened her up until she stared him in the eyes.
“Breathe slowly. We aren’t safe yet,” Sam whispered as he pulled her against his chest. He wrapped his arms around her shoulders while he stared at the building in front of him. He saw something humans couldn’t—big flying monsters similar to smaller dragons. They searched and destroyed everything in their path. They were trying to track Kyra’s scent and, soon enough, they would find her.
“I’m cold,” she complained, almost bursting into tears because of what had happened.
“I know,” he whispered sweetly and rubbed her back. “Here.” He put some distance between them, so he could dress her with his leather jacket.
“You’ll be cold,” Kyra mumbled, but welcomed the warm sensation that overtook her skin when his jacket wrapped around her. It smelled like him, spicy and exotic.
“I won’t. We need to keep running.”
“The firemen are coming. Everything will be okay,” Kyra explained.
Making eye contact with him, she saw the flames reflecting in his gaze.
“We can’t stop.” He took her by the hand and led her to the alley where a motorcycle waited for them. “I have to take you somewhere safe.”
“We are safe now.”
“No, we’re not. Trust me, they are coming for us,” he warned. Sitting on the motorcycle, he insisted she got on behind him.
She obeyed and wrapped her arms around his waist. Tired, she laid her head on his back, feeling warmer and safer. They hadn’t died in the explosions—that was reassuring—however, her body quivered with anxiety. Why weren’t they waiting to talk to the police? Why were they still running away?
Samuel sped away to leave that place before the flying monsters found their tracks. Yet, like he had
expected, it wasn’t long until some of them warned the others, in unpleasant screams, about Kyra’s whereabouts. The monsters had seen them fleeing. Soon enough, the flying menaces were tracking them, breaking windowpanes with the sonorous movements of their wings and crashing cars. They used their claws to grab the cars and throw them in the air until they hit the motorcycle.
