“You’re not getting married first?” Gretchen asked.
“Because this is a traditional strict sort of relationship,” Bethany snickered.
Gretchen rolled her eyes. “Who doesn’t want a wedding?”
Mel and Bethany raised their hands.
Tiff wanted it, but her priorities were a bit different. “I’m not getting any younger. If I want a daughter or two, I need start on that. Weddings can happen any time, but Mother Nature can be a mean old bitch.”
“To a baby girl or three.” Dana lifted her glass.
“Baby girls!” Everyone toasted.

Later that week while volunteering at the animal shelter, Tiff was down to one kitten from the litter that she’d bottle fed. The all-black female was small but feisty. Today she was extra curious and perky because a litter of puppies had been brought in.
“People really need to fix their animals if they don’t want more,” Tiff commented.
“Absolutely,” Mick agreed. He was patiently washing the muddy paws.
“Dad never let me have a cat.” Tiff grabbed the black furball, who instantly clung to her shoulder.
“That one seems attached.” Mick grinned.
“Is Phil allergic?” she asked.
“I don’t think so.” Mick looked at the puppies. “I never had one either. Well, not a pet I got to keep.”
“That runt looks like he’d follow you to the North Pole and back. If we raise them together from when they’re little, they’ll be fine.” She wanted to repair whatever she could from his childhood.
Dana walked in from preparing the puppies’ cage. “I’ll dry the rest off and settle them. See if those two will get along.”
“You’re being very domestic.” Mick rubbed the runt with a towel and set him on a play table where adopters could interact a bit with the animals.
Tiff set the kitten in there and tossed in a few balls. They chased the toys and turned to chasing each other. A few hisses and barks turned into sniffing, pouncing, and licking.<3
“I think it’ll work.” She grinned.
“Should I call Sean and Phil and check with them?” Mick reached for his phone.
“No, this is a surprise. We can buy the supplies and be all set up before they get home.” She kissed his cheek.
Mick tossed the ball, and the puppy bounded after it. “What if they want their own?”
“There’s plenty more in the litter.” She already had a house full of men. What was a few dogs and a cat to keep them in line? It’d be good practice for kids. The smile on Mick’s face said it all, and her grin felt about as big.
