These were things that have partially offset my feelings of sorrow and bitterness and hatred at the things I saw in the Tombs, and seven years before, in the streets of Brooklyn.
Partially, because I wonder who will cry for the old men, and for the young men, in a society that has spent so much time making everyone equal that now “we are all so equal, we’re nothing.” Jerry the Doorman, do you hear?
Or as John Mason Brown has said:
Is the Common Man too common?
I’ve got this Common-Man Wind-Up Doll, see. You just wind it up, set it down on a table…
…and it finks on you.
