  and Tara's daughter called her brother that lived across the state

  And when they found that Tara was not going to make it

  They called the son who lived in China

  And told him to get there as soon as he could,

  their mother was dying.

  It took him and his wife two days and two nights to get to the hospital from Taiwan.

  They all three went in to say goodbye to her.

  Then the older two left and the younger son stayed.

  He stayed because he had talked to the blind man and he had told this son about

  them,

  and how the blind man also knew about the son of a bitch,

  and how he hoped that this son would bless them to start a new life together...

  and that his mother had seemed the happiest he had ever seen her

  and Janice backed that up with her own tears.

  He stayed because he wanted to say something to his mother.

  She was unconscious, but he had to say it anyway.

  He prayed that she would hear him.

  He held her hand and leaned over to her ear and told her, "Mom, please forgive me for all I did to you. And for ever standing in the way of your happiness."

  Then he felt the life go out of her hand

  and she died.

  And I know all of this

  because I am that son.

  And I know that

  I asked the blind man

  to go to the funeral with us

  but he would not go.

  He was devastated

  as we – her grown children were.

  And I know that

  when we returned to the high rise

  after the funeral

  and got off the elevator,

  the police were at the end

  of the hall

  at the apartment before my mothers,

  at the apartment

  of the blind man.

  He had killed himself.
