“This is so exciting!” she said with a huge smile. “I’ve had a ton of ideas that I’ve wanted to share with you. This is such a dream come true. Thank you!”

“I know you’ll do great things, Ella. Now hurry along. I’d like to hear your thoughts tomorrow.”

The address was right on the water. The boardwalk was always packed, but the strip of offices had parking directly behind it, so she got there with ease. Gripping the key in her hand, she hurried excitedly to the new space.

It bordered a small private office and a bookstore. She unlocked the glass door eagerly and stepped in.

Posters already covered the walls, and a small desk sat out front with brochures. The entire left wall was nothing but a giant aquarium. Although it didn’t have anything swimming in it yet, it was decorated with bright coral.

She opened the swinging door to the back. A short hallway led to three different doors. They were neatly labeled for terrestrial, aviary, and marine life. Each room was more than sufficiently equipped to handle short-term living quarters for their animal ambassadors.

It was all hers. Well, it was the wildlife center’s, but it felt like hers. She was already brimming with ideas.

As she went back to the front to check out the information pamphlets on the desk, she scanned the aquarium again.

  Her heart stopped.

From the other side, Erik Chesnovak stared at her.

She felt like all the air had been sucked out of the room, and she reached over to brace herself on the desk. She was filled with both pain and joy as she stared.

Slowly, the pieces started to fit together. The immediate acceptance into school and the scholarship. Then there was the seemingly-out-of-the-blue offer to work at the wildlife center. She thought things were finally working out in her favor, but it was clear now that someone had a hand in it.

Erik had been pulling the strings all this time.

Torn between irritation and anger, she narrowed her eyes and stormed out of the center. The private business next to it had a small sign over the door.

  Chesnovak Consulting.

“Of all the nerve,” she hissed when she wrenched the door open. “What the hell were you thinking?”

His eyes widened in surprise, and he held up his hands. “Ella, don’t be angry. I can explain.”

“You know what? I don’t even care about your explanation. Did you do this? School? The job? What the hell were you thinking? I told you that I loved you, and you fucking walked away! Did you think this would work again? Manipulate my life so that I would have to be near you? Are you hoping that seeing you every day will weaken my resolve so I’ll let you—”

Erik crossed the room quickly and grabbed her by the shoulders. “Ella.”

There was something in his voice that made her stop. She clamped her mouth shut and stared at him. He looked so good that it hurt.

“I can’t do this again,” she whispered. “Please don’t make me.”

“There are no strings attached,” he said quietly. “I promise. I did this for you. I did this because you, of all people, deserve to have your dreams come true. Say the word, and I’ll move my consulting business. You’ll never have to see me again.”

“Why did you put it there to begin with,” she said numbly. The anger was gone, and now she didn’t know how she felt. “If you’re just going to move it?”

“I had to try.” He reached out and slowly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “I would have regretted it until my dying breath if I didn’t try.”

  “Try what?”

“How can you not know?” he said hoarsely. “Ella, I’ve loved you from the moment you walked through the doors of my club. I desired you from day one, but when you stood there, looking so brave and innocent, I knew that I was never going to be the same. I hate myself for what I did to you, and I’ll try to atone for it for the rest of my life.”

She squeezed her eyes shut when she felt the tears start to gather. “I love you too, Erik, but it’s not enough. I can’t be with you knowing the kind of life you lead.”

“Come here, baby.” He hooked an arm around her waist and guided her to the window. Pressing his body against her back, he kissed the top of her head. “What do you see?”

Feeling helpless, she opened her eyes. “It’s a pretty view. Great location.”

“No. Tell me what you see.”

Confused, she bit her bottom lip. “The ocean,” she said finally. Suddenly, it dawned on her. “A small business by the ocean.”

“My childhood dream. The first thing I did after I sent you away was stop the illicit practices at the Black Orchid. It’s nothing more than a dance club and bar now. No drugs. Nothing illegal. The second thing I did was ship my guards back home. I no longer needed them protecting me. The rest of the staff is gone, too.”

Ella was too scared to acknowledge the hope that grew inside her. She leaned against the warmth of his body and took a deep breath. “Why not?”

“Before I was completely cut off from the family fortune, I bought this place for you. Then I called my father and told him that I was out.”

  “Out,” she echoed.

“I sold the club. I sold the house. The only source of income I have is this business right here.”

“You sold the house?” she said faintly. “Where on earth are you living?”

“Upstairs. Do you want to see it?”

That sounded dangerous, but she didn’t resist as he took her by the hand. Behind his desk was a set of steps that led up to the second floor. When he unlocked the door at the top, she walked in and gasped.

It was an open floor plan that spanned the whole width of the building. Half the front wall was nothing but glass, providing a spectacular view of the ocean.

“There are four bedrooms in the back. I figure that’s big enough for two kids and a guest room,” he said quietly.

Her heart pounded in her chest when she turned her head to stare at him. “You’re thinking of having kids?”

  “With the right person.”

“I see.” Her whole mouth dried up. “This is a huge change for you. Are you okay?”

Erik shrugged. “My father is displeased. I am his only son, but there are cousins that can take over. He’s promised to honor my wishes and not try to expand anymore in my city. If I’m going to get out cleanly, I don’t want to see it.”

Ella couldn’t help it. She smiled. “You did all of this for me?”

“Yes. And me. My father’s business is all I’ve ever known, so I didn’t know there was anything else out there for me. You showed me that I still had the ability to love and care for people. You’ve shown me that I can chase my own dreams. I legitimized the club, and I could have kept it, but it’s not what I want.” He spread his arms out. “This is what I want. My own business. Clean. Small. And a place at your side. I understand you’ll need some time to think about it. I’ll give you all the time you need.”

She smiled wickedly. “What am I deciding?”

He frowned and studied her. “Am I not making myself clear?”

“You’re doing a bang-up job of skirting around the actual words.”

“So I am.” He shook his head and took her hand once again. “I should do it properly.”

Her body tingled with excitement as he led her down the hall and into a bedroom. “I believe I once told you that there weren’t going to be flower and chocolates waiting for you.”

She stared at the bed. “And a diamond ring. You said diamond ring,” she croaked. Splayed out on the bed were at least five dozen red roses and several boxes of chocolates.

In the middle of it all was a beautiful diamond ring.

“I’ve never been so wrong in my life. Marry me, Ella. I know I don’t deserve it. I don’t deserve you, but I’ll spend the rest of my life doing whatever it takes to see that smile on your face.”

There was nothing left to say. She turned and wrapped he
r arms around his neck. He lifted her effortlessly, and she kissed him long and deep. He laid her on the bed, crawled over her and propped himself up on his elbows to stare at her. “Is that a yes?”

Not saying anything, she pulled his shirt over his head and worked it down his arms. When he finally moved, she tossed it to the floor and reached for the button of his pants.

“Ella?” he asked as his eyes searched hers. “What are you thinking?”

She pushed his pants down until he had to slide of the bed and kick them off. Enjoying the tantalizing view of his naked body, she quickly stripped her own shirt and pants.

His cock rose to attention, she wrapped her hands around it and squeezed.

“Fuck, Ella,” he moaned. “You’re killing me. Please.”

Releasing him, she pushed him back and slowly undid her bra. Teasingly, she reached up and pinched one of her nipples. His eyes darkened, and he shook his head.

“What are you trying to do to me woman?”

Feeling empowered, she stood, turned around, and bent at the waist as she lowered her panties. His grunt of approval was all she needed to hear before she crawled back onto the bed. She looked at him over her shoulder.

Erik stood frozen. “Please, baby. I’m begging you.”

Finally, she reached over and plucked the ring out of the box and slid it onto her finger. In the span of a heartbeat, he was top of her, sweeping flowers and candy out of his path. His mouth plundered hers as his hands raced all over her body.

“That better be a yes, because there is no way in hell I’m letting go of you now. You have no idea how good you look to me right now. Stark naked in my bed with my ring on your finger.”

“If I could, I would marry you tomorrow,” she said as she leaned up to kiss him gently. “Now get to work. You have two months to make up for.”

He had her twisting and panting with his fingers. He broke her wide open with his tongue. In long and slow strokes, he fucked her until the orgasm had her screaming his name. He flipped her over and took her hard, and when she finally mounted him, he gave her one last body-shuddering orgasm before he finally spilled himself inside her.

When she’d first lusted after the mysterious Russian stranger, she had no idea it would come to this. The fear and the heartbreak in between was nothing compared to a lifetime of this.

  Her love. Her heart.

  Her Russian.

  Chapter One

The city of Cherporavak bowed its head in somber silence to commemorate the death of Chava Minski. Hundreds of people lined the church walls and the block to pay their respects, but not everyone did it out of love. Although the older man was far less violent than his predecessor, no one could honestly say that the man was kind. Chava didn’t believe in second chances.

Dominic Minski shoved his hands in his pockets and stared at the church. The funeral would be ending soon, and he had yet to step foot inside the church.

A large man in a dark ponytail approached him and bowed his head. “Boss.”

Dominic stiffened at the name. “Maksim,” he said tightly. Like many of the things that Dominic had inherited from his father, Maksim was bland and cold. But he’d been loyal to his father, and he would be loyal to Dominic. “What do you need?”

“Would you like some personal time with you father? Before the burial?”

  “No.”

Dominic had big shoes to fill. Although it was small, the city had flourished under Chava. Crime rate was at an all-time low, but that was mostly because Chava was protective of his territory. As the mob boss, he made sure the only infractions committed were his own, and he kept his men in line. He didn’t overtax the businesses, and he provided protection where needed. The residents feared him, but almost everyone respected to him. Everyone knew the golden rule. Be good to Chava, and Chava will be good to you.

When his body was found floating in the river, the first prime suspect was Dominic himself. The police believed the son kill the father for leadership, but Dominic’s grief was too open and raw to be considered an act. The investigators released him and moved on, but Dominic already knew who killed his father.

He knew because he’d been there to see it.

Maksim still stared at him. He was clearly waiting for Dominic to give him an order.

He pulled his hands from his pockets and clasped them behind his back as he stared at his new employee. “My father liked to walk along the docks at night to clear his head. He used to tell me that the rushing currents reminded him that while he was powerful, there was always something that could easily wipe them all out. Humbling and completely ridiculous. It’s almost impossible to protect the piers. Open on three sides. A sharpshooter could have taken him out at any minute.”

“But it wasn’t a sharpshooter, boss,” Maksim said frowning.

“No.” Dominic took a deep breath and watched, as the curious funeral guests looked his way. His father was murdered with a short-range pistol from one man who walked along the shoreline. The shooter had little regard for his life, and an autopsy later revealed that the man was dying of cancer. He had nothing left to live for except for the glory of his boss.

  Rival leader Kostya Polanski.

“You’ve made sure that the men stay silent. I’m sure the police will question everyone, but I want more than civil justice. I want blood. I want to handle this internally.”

He wouldn’t rest until he’d done everything he could to destroy Kostya’s life, and then, when the man was on his knees and begging for mercy, Dominic would finally end him.

The crowd parted, and the pallbearers carried his father out. As he stared at the casket, he could only focus on his rage. The priest and his chorus followed his father in song and praise, and everyone bowed their heads in respect. The sun gleamed on the painted glass windows, and the flowers were carried out next. So many flowers. Bright. Colorful. Everything his father was not. Many people would call it a beautiful ceremony, but Dominic couldn’t focus on the details. All he could see was his father lying dead in the ornate box.

“Most of these people have no idea what goes on in the background. They have no idea what my father did. They have no idea what I have to do now,” he muttered.

Dominic was only thirty-five. He was far too young to take over the business, but his father had trained him well. The transition would be fluid. Chava’s men were loyal to Dominic. Chava’s territory was loyal as well. There would be no bloody attempts at a coup. Dominic didn’t even have to wait for the paperwork to go through. The city was his, and he would run it with the same firm hand that his father had.

When the hearse pulled away, Dominic buttoned his jacket and pushed himself off the car.

Before he could walk away, the priest approached him and held out his hand. “Is there anything I can do for you, my son?”

He was a man of God. There was nothing he could do for Dominic except this. “Pray for the soul of Kostya Polanski. He does not have many days left in this world,” Dominic muttered angrily as he strode past the priest to join his men.

Two cars down, a familiar body opened the door and stepped out. Gavril leaned over the open door and regarded Dominic closely. “Do you want to go to the reception hall?”

Dominic heard him, but there was only one thing on his mind as he swept his eyes over the crowd. He wondered if Polanski had the balls to come
to the funeral.

Immediately, his whole body stiffened. Across the parking lot, Kostya leaned against him limousine and watched him.

“No,” Dominic growled. “I don’t give a damn about any reception. Gather anyone who has information on Kostya Polanski. My father will be buried tonight, and tomorrow the mourning period will be over. I want my father avenged.”

Gavril was one of the few people who could speak freely to Dominic. He was shorter than Dominic’s six feet, and he had a soft and handsome face, but to assume that Gavril was a harmless man would be a mistake. He was as cold and cruel as they come, but he didn’t deal in blood.

  He dealt in lies.

As they both ducked into the car, Gavril frowned. “Dominic, I know you’re pissed, but you can’t just dive headfirst into this. Kostya has double the manpower than you do. I get that you want revenge, but we need to be smart about this, or you’ll be joining your father.”

His eyes blazing with anger, Dominic pounded his fist on the seat. “I don’t give a damn what kind of manpower that man has,” he roared. “I want him dead, and I want him dead now!”

Gavril fell silent, and Dominic breathed deeply until he could control his temper. The anger would never leave until he had what he wanted. “I’m sorry,” he muttered. “You’re right. We need to be smart about this. I don’t just want him dead. I want him to suffer. I want to hold power over his head and watch him quake in fear before I spill his blood.”

“That’s the spirit,” Gavril said sarcastically. “Well, at least you’re willing to slow down just a bit. We’ve done some recon work, but it’s almost impossible to get to Kostya. He almost never leaves him home, and it’s heavily guarded. We need someone on the inside to get more information.”
