  CHRONOLOGY

  1929 Grace Patricia Kelly was born on November 12 in Philadelphia, as the third of four children. Her parents were the Irish-American building contractor and millionaire John Brendan Kelly and the German-American athletic instructor Margaret Majer. They were married on January 30, 1924. Margaret Majer's parents, Grace Kelly's grandparents, were German emigrants: grandmother Margaretha Berg was born in Heppenheim on the Bergstrasse, and her grandfather Carl Majer was from Immenstaad on Lake Constance.

  1935 Father John B. Kelly ran for the office of Mayor of Philadelphia and lost.

  1936 Grace started school at Ravenhill Academy of the Assumption in Philadelphia.

  1941 First acting lessons with the Old Academy Players in East Falls, Philadelphia, as well as her first acting appearance at the age of twelve.

  1943 Attended the Stevens School in Germantown, Philadelphia

  1947 High school graduation. Summer trip to Europe. Beginning of studies at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. She lived in the Barbizon Hotel. First side job as a photography model and her first television advertising appearance.

  1948 November 3: first involvement with a live television broadcast for NBC. Between 1948 and 1956, Grace Kelly acted in 42 live television programs, including The Swan.

  1949 Conclusion of acting studies. November 16: theater debut on Broadway in August Strindberg's play The Father alongside Raymond Massey (69 performances).

  1950 16 live television performances for CBS and NBC.

  1951 Movie debut in Fourteen Hours (director: Henry Hathaway). Various roles in about three dozen live television broadcasts. Further acting lessons with Sanford Meisner at New York City's Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre.
