  Chapter 1

Kenny wasn’t sure why he was feeling so wretched. Perhaps it was the 2 a.m. burritos or the ten beers; something was making him so woozy that he couldn’t even sit up. The tour bus rocked from side to side and it made him want to hurl. He wondered if he could even get there in time. Taking the few steps off the bunk and to the head, he pushed it open with his foot. He tried to keep the noise down, but he was met with a round of cheers when he got out. Wiping his mouth, he flipped his bandmates off and jumped back up on the top bunk. “You guys are asses.”

“It’s not our fault you are such a cupcake nowadays. I guess its age just catching up with you.”

Kenny nodded and then told Jerry to piss off. Turning back towards the jiggling wall in front of him, he closed his eyes, trying to get a little more sleep before their show that night. The tour was cancelled for a time while the lead singer got his affairs in order, but the band still had thirty gigs to play over the next couple of months and though he had enjoyed the hiatus, he was ready to get the money rolling in again. Between child support and alimony, it was enough to drain even the richest man dry. Kenny needed to get back on the road. Thinking about it made him sick again and he moved back to the bathroom to cheers. “Forget you guys.”

The dark-haired man spent quite some time in there, splashing water on his face and trying to ease the ill in his body. If he thought about Mandy and Dominic too much, it would happen again. He had heard that divorce was like a sort of death and now he could relate to it. It made him sick to even think about it even after six months. He had been the one that messed up, cheating on her while he was on the road. Kenny regretted his actions, but it seemed easier being single again. Their marriage had always been tense, unlike the easy-going wedding bliss that had been short-lived.

Moving back to the small shower situated in the back, he ran the cold water over his head, cooling his body down. It wasn’t enough to drink every night and he was lighting a joint before he got out of the shower. Jerry smelled it and pushed back, his hand going over the shower door to get it. He bitched about it being wet and handed it back after a minute. Kenny noticed he wasn’t so offended that he didn’t smoke any of it.

“What is wrong with you Ken? You aren’t thinking about the wifey again are you?”

Kenny made a disparaging noise and turned the water off. He held the joint up and waited for him to take it. When he did, he grabbed the towel hanging up and wrapped it around his waist. Stepping out, Jerry moved back and handed him back his smoke. As he walked back up, someone else ask for a hit, so he handed it off and went to grab some clothes. He moved back to get dressed and was feeling better as the bus stopped for lunch.

They still had a couple hundred miles to go and then a set-up for the seven o’ clock show. It was a smaller town outside of Indianapolis and the area around it was full of corn and cows. Not really a place that boasted much for a man like him. He ordered some kind of fried meat with potatoes and gravy and wasn’t sure what it was, even after he had eaten it.

The town they were playing in wasn’t much better and the band did some practicing while they finished the last leg of the trip for the day. They would have a couple of days off in the dank town of Orson, but it would be pretty boring, Kenny imagined. Farm after farm passed them by and while he was happy for a break from his single life, he craved a big city with a few loose women to make him forget even more.

“Kenny. Hello? I swear you are fricking worthless since the split.”

“Justin, don’t be a dick. Have a little compassion.”

He screwed up his face and took a drink of his beer. “Yeah, all right. I am just saying you are harshing the mellow around here. Let it go, man. There will be plenty of hot chicks that would love to be your next ex. You have to be more positive.”

Kenny nodded and smiled, though it never reached his dark brown eyes. He didn’t believe it would happen. He had always thought that Mandy was going to be his one and only. It just wasn’t right with anyone else and after a couple of times, he had given up. After a few months, the cravings were less, but when the rest of the guys were pairing off with hot groupies, he was reminded of the tinge in his pants.

“Screw the groupies. Let’s just have a good show tonight. Last night was rough. I am not drinking tonight.”

“Yeah right. You will be first.”

Kenny nodded, though he knew Justin was probably right. He had been drinking more, but it made everything go away for a while and it was what was needed.

The crew did a few more songs as they finished the trip. Pulling up to the outside stadium; at least he had nice weather to look forward to. There were already tons of people in the stands and grass waiting, which boded well for the evening they would have. A bunch of pumped fans always made him feel better, if only temporarily.

There was a roaring from the fans when they got out and it was almost worth the drive there. Who would have known that there would be so many of them in the middle of
the corn fields? Kenny started to smile and feel the energy of the people around them. They did a little tuning while the chicks that set up the sound did their thing. Kenny was left to mingle with the crowd for a while, his eyes on the lookout for a hot, adoring fan that he could forget things with for a bit.

Consciously he was looking for redheads. He had an affinity for them and not just because Mandy was one. There was something about the creamy white freckled skin and the swath of red hair below that set his body on fire. If only he could find someone to keep him busy for the next couple of days, he wouldn’t be so stir crazy cooped up in the bus with the band. No matter where the band was, there were always girls that wanted to be part of the tour, in any capacity they would allow.

Kenny stopped as he saw a flash of red curls in the distance. He took in the slight woman that was singing one of their songs with a friend, both women inebriated way before the band was even supposed to play. He started to walk over to the bewitching woman, when he heard his name from a familiar voice. Turning around, he waved, waiting for the voice to come closer.

  Chapter 2

Kenny waited for Jerry to catch up and when he looked back, the girl was gone. “Hey man where are you taking off to?”

“Just getting something to drink and checking out the fans. I like when I come out by myself because they never recognize me alone.”

“You’re out here looking for a redheaded chick, aren’t you?”

Kenny showed a slight embarrassment on his cheeks. They knew him too well. He just like them, what could he say?

“Well I am looking to get laid tonight. I’m telling you the gingers are where it is at. Once you try one, it is never the same again.”

Jerry nodded. He had heard it all before and while he was happy with his wife, there was something mysterious about a true redhead. “Well, happy hunting my man. Don’t drink too much. Set is in half an hour.”

Kenny nodded and watched the tall man move through the throng of people. He envied the man’s wife and the ease in which they were together. He and Mandy had never been that comfortable together and the real reason they had gotten married was because she was pregnant. What had once been a great friend to him was much closer to an enemy at present. The final straw were the court proceedings and though he had been charged an exorbitant amount of alimony and child support, at least he retained visitation rights. The only problem was that when he was on the road, he wasn’t able to see him as much as he wanted. Kenny hoped that his few days off, he would be able to fly back home for at least a day or two.

Kenny searched for the redhead that he had glimpsed before. Pulling out his phone, he sent a text to Mandy and waited for a response. He saw another flash of red and followed it to the back where the concession stands were. Kenny needed a beer anyways, so he moved back to the beer stand and ordered a couple.

  “Kenny!”

He nodded back and raised a hand to a drunken fan. They hit glasses and before long Kenny was in a drinking contest with the random guy. After his third or fourth, he remembered he had a gig and started back towards the stage. His step was a little wobbly and his eyes a little blurry, but then he saw that flash of red again. It was becoming an obsession and soon the rest were on stage and they called him up. “Kenny, get your ass up here so we can start.”

The crowd laughed as he made his way up there. “And to the redhead that he is looking for. Please see us after the last set. Kenny has something for you.”

More cheers and then Kenny grabbed his guitar, flipping off the loud mouth on the microphone. Justin counted down the first song and soon Kenny was lost in the music. He tried not to find the girl out in the audience, the bright light and darkness made all the faces blend together anyways. Closing his eyes, it was only about the music in that moment. He started to sweat as the hot lights beat down on him and before he knew it, they were singing their last song. Many had taken heed to what Justin had said and there were several redheaded women waiting for him at the end of the set. Walking down the stairs, he nodded to several of them. His eyes swept over those waiting and he was saddened to not see the curly haired one from before. It was not just her hair, but the smile that had held him captive.

His mood worsened as he bade goodnight to the fans. Kenny didn’t know why he was stuck on the woman, but he was bummed when he didn’t see her. Everyone was going out for a few drinks and Kenny went with. If he couldn’t have what he wanted, a few beers would be the best replacement he could think of.

He went into the small town bar that looked about as big inside as the bus that they all road in. Country music blared from the inside and he sighed. If he’d seen one hick bar, he had seen them all. He almost didn’t even go in, but it was better than lying up all night in the tomb-style bunk. Ignoring the few women that were outside, he stepped into the loud building and was immediately caught off guard when the mysterious redhead was behind the bar, serving drinks. He walked up and took a seat, watching her work before she realized that she had more customers.

“Hey sweetie. What can I get for you guys?”

“To hell with them, I need a couple of beers.” She laughed. A lilted sound that pulled at his heart strings. She started to pop the top off a couple of bottles that she pulled out a cooler beneath the bar. She pushed them in front of him. He tried to pay and she held her hand up.

“First round is on me, Kenny. I really like your music.”

  Chapter 3

“So you have heard us before?”

“Of course. Everyone listens to Junked around here. I know you like to think of it playing in those big cities, but we love you just as much here in the small towns.”

“Did you see our concert earlier?”

“For a bit, but I had to come back to work. I’m glad you came here for a drink.”

  “Can I ask your name?”

  “Andy.”

Kenny watched her turn away and tend to the other customers. She was busy for several minutes and then she was over at the bar and grabbing drinks for the people sitting at the tables. She seemed too slight to be able to carry the heavy trays she was walking around with. One in particular was too full for her and he grabbed it out of her hands before she dropped it. She thanked him and looked at him in a way that made his heart beat harder in his chest.

“So when do you get off, soon?”

She looked at her watch. “In another hour.”

“I want to go where you are going.”

  “I’m going home.”

  “Sounds perfect.”

Andy’s clear complexion showed the embarrassment of his words and her face burned. Kenny liked the way she turned red and it reminded him of why he liked redheads so much in the first place. It was impossible to hide their emotions with such fair skin and Andy was blushing prettily.

  “I’ll wait.”

  ***

“Sorry for the mess. If I would have known I was taking back a rock star, I definitely would have picked up my laundry.” Andy walked around. Her cheeks still pink as she picked up several bras and outfits that she had thrown around. “Do you want a drink? I have some wine and maybe some rum left.”

  “Sure.”

His eyes followed her nervous movements around the room. He sat down on the couch and looked around the small room. It was covered in paintings and crafts of seashells and the ocean. It seemed strange in a small town in the Midwest, so far away from any coast, but it seemed to suit her. Andy came back in with a couple of drinks and handed him one as she picked up papers that were lying around. He grabbed her hand. “Sit down with me. It is fine, really.”

Their eyes met for a moment and her green eyes had taken on a brown ring, with tiny gold flecks in their depth. He could have looked at them forever, but she finally looked down, unable to keep his gaze. “So how long are you in town for, the night?”

“No I think we are recharging here before we hit Chicago.”

“Oh. There isn’t much to see here.”

  “I don
t know. I think some of the local treasures are worth looking at.”

She smiled, her eyes darting to his for a moment. Kenny had moved closer and she was still trying to get over the fact that he was right next to her on her sofa. It was surreal and the way he looked at her made her sip the dark liquid in her glass. It burned as it went down and she grimaced slightly. Everything she intended to say suddenly had an innuendo attached and she found herself taking another drink in the silence that stretched out between them.

“I really like your new song, Highway Lady. Did you write or who does that?”

“Justin wrote that one. I have written a couple on the new album coming out this year.”

“I can’t wait to hear it. I bet it will be good. You were always my favorite and the cutest in the band.”

She was red and taking another drink. He hoped she was getting some courage from the drink. “Would you like me to sing it to you?”

  “You don’t have your guitar.”

“I don’t need it.” Kenny turned towards her and took her hand. His voice was soft as he sang the song of love and desire to her. It was the most romantic thing that she had ever heard and that it was him, made it that much more special. She could feel herself falling under his spell and when he moved closer, she didn’t shy away from him. If anything, she moved closer, waiting for his lips to capture hers.

When he finally did, she closed her eyes and whimpered against his lips. His tongue pushed into her hot crevice, demanding that she play with him. She was lost in his touch, his body pushing her deep into the couch as his hands traveled along her curves.

His hand slipped through the wide hole of her shorts and then pushed her panties to the side before she could say anything. She gasped as she felt his rough finger push inside of her hole and he hissed at her wetness. Just being next to him could have done it, but the song put her over the top quickly. Her moans were cut short by Kenny’s lips moving over hers, his finger pumping faster as she moaned into his mouth.
