‘No, you don’t want to do that.’

I think of the aneurysm clip inside Eve’s brain, and my heart races. One of the old metal varieties, Eve said.

I must have a strange look on my face, because at once the doctor stops speaking. ‘Are you all right?’ she asks, concerned.

‘What?’ I stammer. ‘Yes, yes, of course. Sorry, I was just trying to keep up with what you were saying. Getting a bit lost in all the jargon.’

She smiles. ‘Okay, then,’ and she reaches for the door. ‘If you’d like to take a seat in the main area, apologies, but we do try to keep this spot free so we can speak privately when necessary. I’ll authorize the scan and I should have some more news for you within the next couple of hours.’

I thank her and make my way to the general waiting room. DC Aspinall is with her partner at the front desk, and Sean has returned to his seat. Sean looks to me, expectant, and I give him a pained expression, indicating that we know nothing further, and sit down next to him.

I pick up a magazine. Start thumbing my way through and stifle a yawn.

Then I sit back and I wait.
